Activity 6

1. The document provides instructions for an activity to learn trigonometric functions in the four quadrants by drawing and labeling points on a unit circle. 2. Students will draw a unit circle with axes and label the points for angles in the first, second, third, and fourth quadrants to determine the values of sine and cosine in each quadrant. 3. By observing the positions of points relative to the axes and each other across quadrants, students can understand how the values of sine and cosine change in different quadrants while their angle measurements remain the same.

– 6 1/5

Subject MATHEMATICS
Class XI
Chapter/Unit Trigonometric functions
Topic Trigonometric angles
Time 40 min
Nature of Activity Individual

What will I learn (Learning Outcome)?

To find the values of sine and cosine functions in second, third and fourth quadrants using
their given values in first quadrant.

Skills: Logical ability, Analytical thinking, Deductive reasoning, Creativity, Accuracy.

What I have to do?

Recall trigonometric angles and their values in first quadrant

What do I require?
Cardboard, white chart paper, ruler, pen/pencil, coloured pens, adhesive,
What do I need to know?

➢ Teacher’s Activity
Teacher will discuss the sign of trigonometric values for angles in all four quadrants
will relate angles in I quadrant to angles in II ,III and IV quadrant and will guide
them to
1. Take a cardboard of convenient size and paste a white chart paper on it.
2. Draw a unit circle with centre O on chart paper.
3. Through the centre of the circle, draw two perpendicular lines XOXand
4.YOY representing x-axis and y-axis, respectively, as shown in Fig.6.1
How will I proceed?
➢ Student’s Activity
Student will draw

1. The coordinates of the point P1 are ( , ) because its x-coordinate is cos

𝜋
and y-coordinate is sin

.2. The coordinates of the points P2 and P3 are ( , )and (2 , ) respectively.

second quadrant (say) rotate the needle in anticlockwise direction making an angle

2𝜋 𝜋
3. Look at the position OP4 of the needle in Fig.6.2. Since =𝜋-

, OP4 is the mirror image of OP3 with respect to y-axis. Therefore, the coordinate of P4 are

(say) in the third quadrant, rotate the needle in anti clockwise direction

making as an angle of with the positive direction of x-axis.

5.Look at the new position OP5 of the needle, which is shown in Fig. 6.3. Point P5 is the
mirror image of the point P4 (since  P4OX = P5OX) with respect to x-axis. Therefore,
1 −√3 2𝜋 4𝜋 −√3
coordinates of P5 are (− , ) and hence sin (− ) = sin = and

Angle in the clockwise direction From Fig. 6.4, P6 is the mirror image of P2 with

4 sine function is non-negative in _______ and _______ quadrants
5 cosine function is non-negative in ______ and _____ quadrants.
