Chapter/Unit Trigonometric functions
Topic Trigonometric angles
Time 40 min
Nature of Activity Individual
What do I require?
Cardboard, white chart paper, ruler, pen/pencil, coloured pens, adhesive,
What do I need to know?
➢ Teacher’s Activity
Teacher will discuss the sign of trigonometric values for angles in all four quadrants
will relate angles in I quadrant to angles in II ,III and IV quadrant and will guide
them to
1. Take a cardboard of convenient size and paste a white chart paper on it.
2. Draw a unit circle with centre O on chart paper.
3. Through the centre of the circle, draw two perpendicular lines XOXand
4.YOY representing x-axis and y-axis, respectively, as shown in Fig.6.1
How will I proceed?
➢ Student’s Activity
Student will draw

1. The coordinates of the point P1 are ( , ) because its x-coordinate is cos

and y-coordinate is sin

3. Look at the position OP4 of the needle in Fig.6.2. Since =𝜋-

, OP4 is the mirror image of OP3 with respect to y-axis. Therefore, the coordinate of P4 are

making as an angle of with the positive direction of x-axis.

5.Look at the new position OP5 of the needle, which is shown in Fig. 6.3. Point P5 is the
mirror image of the point P4 (since P4OX = P5OX) with respect to x-axis. Therefore,
1 −√3 2𝜋 4𝜋 −√3
coordinates of P5 are (− , ) and hence sin (− ) = sin = and

Angle in the clockwise direction From Fig. 6.4, P6 is the mirror image of P2 with

Thus sin =sin (– )= − and cos = 𝑐𝑜𝑠( – )=

say , rotate the needle in anti-clockwise direction since = 2𝜋 + the needle will
