Stuart A. Thompson has extensive experience in print journalism and media. He received his BA in Media Studies from the University of Western Ontario and a diploma in Print Journalism from Sheridan College. Most recently, he served as Editor-in-Chief of The Gazette (UWO) student newspaper where he oversaw a staff of over 50 and transitioned the paper to incorporate more digital and social media. He is currently awaiting a summer position at The Globe and Mail starting in June 2011.

• Managed an office of 23 editors with more than 50 volunteers, overseeing story selection,
layout, editing, headline writing, photo selection and website content on high-pressure daily basis
• Used social media and online reporting to become the principal news source for
information about a Western faculty strike, earning more than 300 Twitter followers in one night
• Wrote the first live news story and live blogged about a violent campus arrest; filmed,
edited and posted a related press conference video to net thousands of views in a day
• Earned a $12,000 budget for a video section I built from the ground up, filming and
editing videos that earned 35,000 views in just over a year
• Overhauling the website and introduced social media, earning a 28 per cent boost in
traffic
• Built a Twitter network from the ground up with 17 Gazette accounts and over 4,000 new
collective followers
• Introduced a digital workflow by putting web first, empowering journalists to break
stories online and redesigned the print edition to emphasize web throws, web icons and online-
only content
• Created a free book-sharing website run through the Gazette to attract online readers
