Problem 1:

(a) Two different temperature scales in the units “S” and “K” are related as: =

Find the temperature at which both the scales show the same reading

(b) A tank contains water with some air above it [Refer the figure given below for data]. A
manometer system is attached as shown in the Figure. Find the gage pressure in KPa at
the air-water interface, point ‘A’. [h1 = 0.24 m, h2 = 0.35 m and h3 = 0.52 m; density of water,
oil and Mercury are 1000 kg/m3, 790 kg/m3 and 13,600 kg/m3 respectively]

Problem 2:
(a) Determine the total work done in the process as shown in the Figure below [PV diagram]

(b) A piston-cylinder arrangement is shown in the Figure below with the frictionless piston
of a diameter of 0.5 m. A stirrer turning at 9000 revolutions is used against the fluid
contained in the cylinder. The torque exerted by the stirrer is 1.3 Nm. The piston is held
against the fluid by the atmospheric pressure of 101325 Pa. The piston moves outward by
a distance of 0.7 m. What is the net work transfer to/by the system

Problem 3:
A vertical piston cylinder arrangement consists of a spring and two stops as shown in
following Fig. Piston diameter is 20 cm, and mass is 10 kg. Piston is frictionless and is free to
move between the stops (H1=10 cm and H2=20cm). Assume the thickness of piston and
stops to be negligible. Spring is linear, with K=20 kN/m and natural length=15 cm. Initially,
the piston is held at the upper stop. It contains air at a pressure 200 kPa and 800K. Heat is
gradually extracted from the system till the pressure reaches 50 kPa and the piston is
situated on the lower stop. Make suitable assumptions and take data for standards constants
from reference books/ lecture notes.
(a) Find the net work done by the system
(b) Find total heat extracted from the system. Assume specific heat to be 0.9 kJ/kg K
(c) Draw the complete process on a P-V diagram. Show all pressure and volume values

Problem 4:
A flexible balloon acts in such a way that when pressure exerted, balloon used to be expanded
which is directly proportional to the diameter. The balloon is temporarily connected to an
air pressure line of 400kPa, 1000C. Air is allowed to fill the balloon until the volume doubles,
during which process there is a heat transfer of 50 kJ from the balloon to the atmosphere.
Find the final temperature of balloon and mass of air entered in the balloon for the following
cases:
a- If balloon contains 1.0 kg air at 100 kPa, 30°C
b- If balloon contains 0.5 kg air at 200 kPa, 30°C
(Note: A suitable assumption may be taken, if necessary)

Problem 5:
(a) An air-conditioning system is used to maintain a house at 240C when the temperature
outside is 350C. The house is gaining heat through the walls and windows at a rate of 800
kJ/min, and the heat generation rate within the house from people, lights and appliances
amounts to 160 kJ/min. Determine the minimum power input required for this air
conditioning system.

(b) A heat engine operates between the maximum and minimum temperatures of 6710 C and
600 C respectively, with an efficiency of 50% of the appropriate Carnot efficiency. It drives a
heat pump which uses river water at 4.40 C to heat a block of flats in which the temperature
is to be maintained at 21.10 C. Assuming that a temperature difference of 11.10 C exists
between the working fluid and the river water, on the one hand, and the required room
temperature on the other, and assuming the heat pump to operate on the reversed Carnot
cycle, but with a COP of 50% of the ideal COP, determine the heat input to the engine per unit
heat output from the heat pump.
