Term Project 2018
Term Project 2018
This project involves the dynamic analysis of a 9-storey office building subjected to the
Canoga Park earthquake record. Descriptions of a typical floor plan and the moment
resisting frame systems are attached herewith. Note that, for the perimeter frames, one of
the exterior bays has only one moment resisting connection (to avoid bi-axial bending in
the corner columns). Beams and columns are specified as grade 50 steel ( Fy = 50ksi ).
The seismic mass for the structures is as follows:
Assume the seismic mass is inclusive (including floor weight, etc...) The earthquake
record (acceleration data, in/sec2) can be found in files ‘Acceleration data N-S’ and
‘Acceleration data E-W’. There are two components for the earthquake record.
Component 1 is assumed to be in the N-S direction and component 2 is assumed to be in
the E-W direction. The time increment for the earthquake ground acceleration record is
taken to be 0.02 seconds. The record is to be applied one component at a time.
For each analysis, the following information for the perimeter moment frames should be
reported:
1. the floor displacements and interstory drift ratios
2. the maximum shear and moment of each member
3. the members and (end) locations where the yield moments are exceeded, if any.
The dynamic analyses are to be performed using ETABS, one of the most commonly
used dynamic structural analysis programs. It should be emphasized that it is your
responsibility to learn how to use this “friendly” software program.
The major part of the work very likely will be to find out what to do and in the modeling
part. Each response spectrum analysis should take couple minutes at the most. Time
history analyses may take up to 20 minutes per each case.
All reports must be neatly typed or written, concisely presented, and submitted before
June 25, 2018.
A final note: We will be discussing the methodologies used in the computer program as
the lectures proceed. Therefore, you may be modeling and analysing the structure without
fully understanding the theories. The analysis results are fundamental to understand and
synthesize lateral design of structures. This exercise will also give you a preview on some
of the issues involved in earthquake engineering.
Additional questions: if gravity frame systems (shown in the table below) are
used, will the structure be safe?
