1. PURPOSE

The purpose of this document is to detail the Procedure for installation of conduits and
electrical switch boxes. This procedure applies to the same in concrete walls, slabs and
masonry walls. The documentation will apply to all Engineers, Workmen, QC personnel
and other concerned persons associated with the work.

2. SCOPE OF WORK

This Procedure covers the applicable codes, specification and standards, sequence of work
to be followed for the fixing of electrical trades preliminary installation items, manpower
requirements, tools and equipment required for the proper execution of works, quality and
required to complete the work in compliance to the satisfaction of consultant/client.

2.1 Activities Covered by This Method Statement.

4. RESOURCES

 Materials
PVC Conduits of heavy-duty category or as per the specification.

MS Conduits - Solid drawn or lap welded, stove enamelled inside and outside with
minimum wall thickness of 1.6 mm up to 25 mm diameter and 2 mm for conduits
above 25 mm diameter associated with Equipment.
Saddles, junction boxes, sockets, and other accessories

 Manpower

QC Engineers, Electricians, Supervisors and helpers and others who directly deal with the
responsibility of handling concrete from plant to the site.

5. SAFETY PRECAUTIONS

 Safety of the personnel and properties is to be given prime importance and all
works to be carried out without causing any accidents or property damages.

 Materials shall be stacked properly near the place of work (Do not stack too
large quantity near the work area thereby causing safety hazard).

 Height of the stack should not be more than one and half meter.

 Scaffolding to be braced adequately.

 Working space to be clear of rubbish, waste mortar etc so that easy access and
cleanliness is ensured.

 Throwing of debris from height strictly prohibited.

 Before commencement of work in front of lift shaft safety permit should be


taken.
6. RESPONSIBILITY

The Project Manager/Construction Manager shall be responsible for the overall


implementation of this procedure.

7. PRECONSTRUCTION REQUIREMENTS
Approved Good for construction drawing with latest revision issued shall be
available with the construction team
Shop drawings: Shop drawings for formwork shall be approved, stamped for GFC
by all the concerned parties for architectural floor plans,

9. INSPECTION OF INCOMING MATERIALS


• Ensuring all the materials delivered to site associated with the activity is inspected
and approved. Delivery note, Manufacture’s Test Certificate and any other relevant
details are submitted along with a Material Inspection Request Format and approved
formally.
• The conduits shall be delivered to the site of construction in original bundles and
each length of conduit shall bear the label of the manufacturer.
• If any material found to be not as per the approved one or with any damages that
can’t be rectifiable will be removed from the bundle/stack and shall be stored
separately at a designated area with an identification board viz ‘REJECTED ITEMS’

• Materials to be stored in dry locations following any recommendation by


manufacturer/supplier or as per the standard to protect from mechanical damage or
adverse weather conditions.

10. WORK PROCEDURE
10.1 General

 Conduit system shall be mechanically continuous and watertight after


installation. All conduit system shall be arranged wherever possible to be
self-draining.
 Conduits and junction boxes shall be kept in position with proper holdfasts
as per the approved details.
 Conduits shall be arranged to facilitate easy drawing of wires through them.
Where conduits cross expansion joints in the buildings, adequate expansion
fittings or other approved devices shall be used to take care of any relative
movement.
 All conduits shall be installed as to avoid steam and hot water pipes.

 After the conduits, junction boxes, outlet boxes and switch boxes are
installed in position, their outlets shall be properly plugged or covered so
that water, mortar, insects, or any other foreign matter does not enter the
conduit system.

 The threads of pipe and sockets shall be free from grease and oil and shall
be thoroughly cleaned before making the screwed joints. All joints shall be
fully watertight.
 Junction boxes and running joints shall be provided at suitable places to
allow for subsequent extension if any, without undue dismantling of conduit
system. As far as possible, diagonal run of conduits and adaptable boxes,
back outlet boxes, switch boxes and the like must be provided with entry
spouts and smooth PVC bushes.

 Joint between conduit and iron clad distribution boards and control gear
shall be effected by means of conduit couplers into each of which will be
coupled smooth PVC bushes from the inside of box or case.
 Conduit system shall be erect and straight as far as possible. To avoid traps
where water may accumulate from condensation and is unavoidable,
suitable provision for draining the water shall be made.

 Separate conduits shall be run for 15 amps power outlet wiring. Separate
conduits connections for MS conduits shall be screwed metal to metal and
be painted with one coat of self-etching zinc chromate primer and two coats
of enamel paint. The threads and sockets shall be free from grease and oil.

 Connections between screwed conduit and sheet metal boxes shall be by


means of a rubber bush, fixed inside the box and connected through a
coupler to the conduit. The joints in conduits shall be free of burrs to avoid
damage to insulation of conductors while pulling them through the conduit.

 Conduits for telephone system shall be at least 150 mm away from the
electrical conduits.

10.2 Bends

 Where necessary, bends or diversions may be achieved by means of bends


and/or circular inspection boxes with adequate and suitable inlet and outlet
screwed joints. In case of recessed system, each junction box shall be
provided with a cover properly secured and flush with the finished
wall/ceiling surface, so that the conductors inside the conduit are
accessible. No bends shall have radius less than 2.5 times the outside the
diameter of the conduit.
 Special spring may be used for bending the conduit. Heating to soften the
conduit for bending is not allowed. Caution should be exercised in using
PVC conduits in location where ambient temperature is 50°C. Use of PVC
conduits where temperature is 60°C. or above is prohibited. PVC conduits
shall not be used in outdoor system.
10.3 Pre-Installation
 Prior to the commencement of work inspect/coordinate with Civil team to
ensure that site is ready to commence the work and the area/work prior to
the electrical work installation is approved by the concerned authority

 Ensure all relevant documentation such as GFC stamped drawings/approved


shop drawings (latest revision) and material applicable to section of works
approved are available.
 Construction Manager/ Project (Site) Engineer shall give necessary
instructions to tradesmen/electrician and provide necessary approved
construction/shop drawings.

 Construction Manager/ Project (Site) Engineer shall check that proper tools
and equipment are available to carry out the work and are in compliance
with contract specification.
 Safety Induction on HSE precautions to be given to all the
workers/Engineers carrying out the work. Daily toolbox talks shall be
conducted.

 Only sufficient materials for a day’s work shall be shifted from store to site
for ensuring that extra materials are not dumped at site to avoid congestion
of working area.
10.4 Installation of PVC Conduit and Boxes – Cast In Situ

 Marking the route of the conduit and position of boxes on the shuttering as
per approved drawings with proper measurement.

 Fix the boxes at the exact locations. Boxes are to be filled with polystyrene
or suitable materials to avoid accumulation and hardening of cement
slurry/concrete.
 Allow bottom layer of reinforcement to lay by civil contractor.

 Installation of conduits as per the approved drawings. The conduits shall be


tied to the reinforcement bars to maintain its position. Maximum number

of bends between boxes and maximum run of conduits in straight line
between boxes shall be maintained as per the standards/codes and details.
 Conduit stubs in floor slabs shall be kept as short as possible above the
finished floor level, in order to avoid any damage to them
 After installation of conduits pull strings/nylon ropes shall be pulled in the
conduit run for future purpose. A slack of 300mm minimum on both ends of
the conduits is considered.

 After the installation of conduits top layer of the rebar works may
proceeded with.

10.5 Embedded conduits on walls


 Mark the position of conduits and boxes in the wall as per the approved
drawing.
 Chase the wall using an appropriate tool that is acceptable to the type of
wall that is to be chased.
 Fix the boxes at its exact location using the method as defined in the
contract. Boxes are to be filled with polystyrene or suitable materials to
avoid accumulation any unwanted materials.

 Install the conduits as per the profile marked. Installation shall permit easy
drawing in of cables.

10.6 Exposed Conduit Installation


 Mark out the conduit route using a chalk line as per the approved drawings
in walls and ceilings.
 Mark the position of boxes and install the boxes in exact location.

 Outlets exposed to the weather shall be fully water tight, complete with
rubber gasketed covers; glass where used shall be heat resistant.

 Conduits to be fixed by means of spacer bar saddles at intervals not more


than 500 mm from both sides of fittings or accessories.

 The saddles shall be of 3 mm x 19 mm galvanized mild steel flat, properly


treated, primed and painted, securely fixed to support by means of nuts
and bolts/rawl plugs and brass machine screws.

 Conduits in chases shall be avoided. Where unavoidable conduits shall be


fixed by means of staples not more than 600 mm apart and the chase filled
with cement mortar 1:4, along with wire mesh. Cutting of horizontal chases
is prohibited. Concealed wiring for electrical and LV system and Fire alarm
system is to be done with PVC conduit.
10.7 Bunching of wires

Wires carrying current shall be so bunched in the conduit that the outgoing and
return cables are drawn into the same conduit. Cables originating from two different
phases shall not be run in the same conduit.

11. INSPECTIONS
Inspection to be carried out as per the Approved Inspection Test Plan and relevant
checklists as per Inspection Checklist is to be signed off.
