Wilderness Adventure Planning Assignment p.
116-117
Part 1: Interpreting the Map
1. Identify two major transportation routes through this region.
2. a) Remember that the brown contour lines how the shape and elevation of the land. The contour
interval of this map is 50ft. What is the height above sea level of the hill located at grid reference
927124?
b) What feature is located on this hill? Why is this feature useful in the Boreal Forest?
3. Identify two pieces of evidence that could be used to support the view that tourism is an important
land use in the region. Use the light blue numbers on the light blue grid lines to provide an accurate
six-digit grid reference number for each example.
Part 2: Drawing the Map & Trip Planning
Use the topographic map in figure 3.17 to plan a two or three day summer canoe or hiking trip.
1. Make a rough sketch of the map on p.116 using the wax paper provided. Colour your map.
2. Using the map you created, mark your canoe or hiking route. You may decide to form a loop ending
where you begin, or return using the same route.
3. Start your route from a location in the town of Temagami or the community of Temagami North. You
may travel in any direction you choose. Show the direction of travel along your route and mark any
places where you decide to make a portage (a trail people use to carry a canoe from one body of water
to another). You may also decide to “rough it” and create your own portage route from one lake to
another.
4. Include on your map two good campsite locations along your route. Explain the advantages of each of
the spots you choose to camp for the night.
5. Locate and label on your route three natural features of interest that you will see and at least one
human-made feature of interest.
6. Offer an explanation as to why you chose the route you chose. Be specific and provide examples.
7. Complete your map with the appropriate legend, title, scale, direction, compass rose and date.
