Network Media Is The Actual Path Over Which An Electrical Signal Travels As It Moves From
Network media is the actual path over which an electrical signal travels as it moves from
one component to another. This chapter describes the common types of network media,
including twisted-pair cable, coaxial cable, fiber-optic cable, and wireless.
Network tools and testing devices
LANCARD
It is a network interface card. This is a computer circuit board or card that is installed in a
computer so that it can be connected to a network.
SERVER
It is a part of a network. It is a special computer that users on the network can access to
carry out a particular job.
HUB/PORT
It is a connector on the back of a computer or other device. A port is either a serial port or
a parallel port.
MODEM
The modem is a device that allows a given computer to share data or otherwise a device
which let computers exchange information
SCANNER
It is an input device that read text or illustration printed on paper, translates the
information into a form that a computer can use
FLATSCREWDRIVER
It is used to drive or fasten negative slotted screws
USB
Universal Serial Bus, a hardware interface for low-speed peripherals such as the
keyboard, mouse, joystick, scanner, printer and telephony devices.
PRINTER
It is a piece of hardware that produces a paper copy (also known as ‘hardcopy’) of the
information generated by the computer.
RAM
Random Access Memory, is a primary memory. This memory is used inside the
computer to hold programs and data while it is running.
BIOS
Basic Input / Output System, chip that controls the most basic functions of the computer
and performs a self-test every time you turn it on.
FLASHDRIVE
RAM that can retain data without electrical power. It is widely used for BIOS chips and
for digital camera and digital music storage
VIDEOCAMERA
A camera using videotape: a camera that records onto videotape
LONGNOSEPLIERS
It is used for holding, bending and stretching the lead of electronics component or
connecting wire.
SOLDERINGIRON
It is used to join two or more metal conductors with the support of soldering lead melted
around it.
DESOLDERINGTOOL
It is used to unsolder unwanted parts or component in the circuit with the support of
soldering pencil.
PHILIPSSCREWDRIVER
It is used to drive or fasten positive slotted screws.
LANTESTER
For RJ11,12,45 & BNC w/ Remote Unit This ergonomic tester is designed to test most
network cable wiring. You can either conduct an auto or manual test.
UTP
Unshielded Twisted Pair, is a popular type of cable used in computer networking that
consists of two shielded wires twisted around each.
Structured cabling is the design and installation of a cabling system that will support
multiple hardware uses and be suitable for today's needs and those of the future. With a
correctly installed system, current and future requirements can be met, and hardware that
is added in the future will be supported
Structured cabling design and installation is governed by a set of standards that specify
wiring data centers, offices, and apartment buildings for data or voice communications
using various kinds of cable, most commonly category 5e (Cat 5e), category 6 (Cat 6),
and fiber optic cabling and modular connectors. These standards define how to lay
the cabling in various topologies in order to meet the needs of the customer, typically
using a central patch panel (which is normally 19-inch rack-mounted), from where each
modular connection can be used as needed
A patch panel in a local area network (LAN) is a mounted hardware assembly that
contains ports used to connect and manage incoming and outgoing LAN cables. Patch
panels are also referred to as patch bays, patch fields or jack fields and are also
commonly used in radio and television.
A raceway (sometimes referred to as a raceway system) is an enclosed conduit that forms
a physical pathway for electrical wiring. Raceways protect wires and cables from heat,
humidity, corrosion, water intrusion and general physical threats.
A SOHO router is a broadband router built and marketed for small offices and home
offices. Since the workload for these types of businesses is primarily on the internet, they
require a local area network (LAN), which means their network hardware is structured
specifically for that purpose. A SOHO network can be a mixed network of wired
and wireless computers. Since these types of networks are meant for businesses, they
may also include printers and sometimes voice over IP (VoIP) and fax over
IP technology.
