INTRODUCTION:
RECREATION is from the Latin word “recreare” which means to refresh, restore, make anew, revive or
invigorate. The need to do something for recreation is an essential element of human biology and psychology.
It means doing things which are renewing, refreshing, or rejuvenating.
It is something interesting to do in leisure which is done simply for the enjoyment of it.
It means some worthwhile, socially accepted, leisure experience which provides immediate satisfactions
to the individual who voluntarily participates in an activity.
Characteristics of Recreation
Recreational activities can be communal or solitary, active or passive, outdoors or indoors, healthy or
harmful, and useful for society or detrimental.
Some recreational activities – such as gambling, recreational drug use, or delinquent activities – may
violate societal norms and laws. (harmful and detrimental to self and society).
It is extremely wide and varied.
It is some sort of action as distinguished from rest.
It must be voluntary; it cannot be ordered, imposed, or forced.
It is flexible; it can be organized or unorganized.
A specific activity can be a recreation to one, but could be a work to another.
It involves an individual's attitude, motive, and incentive.
It is necessary in order for an individual to have balanced growth.
Forms of Recreation
1. Bricolage and DIY
building, modifying, or repairing things without the direct aid of experts or professionals
individuals use raw and semi-raw materials and parts to produce, transform, or reconstruct
material possessions, including those drawn from the natural environment (e.g., landscaping)
DIY behavior can be triggered by various motivations previously categorized
as marketplace motivations (economic benefits, lack of product availability, lack of product
quality, need for customization), and identity enhancement (craftsmanship, empowerment,
community seeking, uniqueness).
They could involve crafts that require particular skills and knowledge of skilled work. Typical
interests enjoyed by the maker culture include engineering-oriented pursuits such as home
improvement, electronics, robotics, 3-D printing, and the use of Computer Numeric
Control tools, as well as more traditional activities such metalworking and woodworking.
2. Games
Any structured form of play; sometimes purely for recreation, sometimes for achievement or
monetary rewards as well.
The games could be board games, puzzles, computer or video games.
3. Outdoor recreation
Recreation engaged in out of doors, most commonly in natural settings.
Traditional examples of outdoor recreational activities include hiking, camping, mountaineering,
cycling, canoeing, caving, kayaking, rafting, rock climbing, running, sailing, skiing, sky diving and
surfing
New pursuits, often hybrids of prior ones are coasteering, canyoning, fastpacking, and plogging
5. Visual arts
Woodworking, photography, moviemaking, jewelry making, software projects such
as Photoshopping and home music or video production, making bracelets, artistic projects such
as drawing, painting, Cosplay (design, creation, and wearing a costume based on an already
existing creative property), creating models out of card stock or paper – called papercraft fall
under the category of visual arts. Many of these are practiced for recreation.
Types of Recreation
The listing below represents one of the ways that recreation could be categorized:
1. Physical activities (sports, games, fitness, etc.)
2. Social activities (parties, banquets, picnics, etc.)
3. Camping and outdoor activities (day camps, resident camps, backpacking, float trips, etc.)
4. Arts and crafts activities (painting, scrapbooking, ceramics, woodworking, etc.)
5. Dramatic activities (plays, puppetry, skits, etc.)
6. Musical activities (singing, bands, etc.)
7. Cultural activities (art appreciation, music appreciation, panels, discussion groups, etc.)

Recreational and leisure time activities help you to attain a proper balance in your lives. This
brings about a level of contentment in your life and you feel totally free of unwanted worries
and stress. This, in turn, helps a person to perform better and be successful. Thus, the overall
quality of your life is improved.
6. Increased levels of productivity ensuring successful lives
Participating in recreational or leisure time activities on a regular basis gives a person a better
level of confidence, good memory, emotional and mental stability, optimism, excellent decision-
making skills, and independence. It’s highly unlikely that they suffer from tension, worries,
anxiety, stress, confusion, or anger. This will increase their level of performance which adds to
their productivity and fruitfulness.
