Advanced Argumentation and Debate
Definition, Distinction, Relation of Debate
Answer the following questions: 1. Give the distinction between argumentation and Debate. Argument vs Debate The main difference between Argument and Debate is that argument is a characterized discussion where reasons are put forth and debate is a formal discussion that is held competitively within an assembly hall. The argument, according to the standard dictionary, is defined as ‘ a disagreement or quarrel’. So, the argument is characterized by discussions of disagreements that do not have a specific order and is a non- contested event. The verb form of this word is ‘argue’ which is often used to show disagreement. The word, debate, according to the standard dictionary, is defined as ‘ a formal discussion’ when the noun form of the word is being used. When used as a verb, though the word remains the same, the meaning of the word often changes. They are commonly used in their verb form in sentences. 2. Explain the meaning of this," Debate is not a mere verbal wrangler. " Debate is a formal direct oral contest in argumentation between two or more persons on a definite proposition at a definite time. Debate is a formal controversy, not a mere verbal wrangling. In a mere verbal wrangling, no formalities are observed, and therefore no art is displayed. “Debate, in a contrast with wrangling, demands the formality of extended and orderly discourse in the interchange of opinion and argument.” 3. What are the importance of Debate? Debate is important because it develops skills and knowledge. It helps the students to become a confident and bold person. And it will help the students to develop a political identity or own identity like a debater. It also helps the students to develop a sense of ownership of the world and a sense of empowerment, as they will know specific global and domestic issues, and the ways in which the government can solve our generation’s problems. It will help them to boost their confidence and will make them bold enough to speak in any situation without any hesitation. 4. What are the methods of approach in the work of Argumentation? What is the function of each? There are two methods of approach in the work of argumentation. They are the appeal to reason, called conviction; and the appeal to the emotions, to the feelings, to the will, called persuasion. Conviction is that phase of argumentation whereby the arguer directs his words to the reasoning faculty of man. Persuasion is that phase of argumentation whereby the disputant directs his words to the heart, to the feelings, to the sentiments, to the emotions. 5. Is conviction alone enough in establishing sound human relations? Why? “Conviction is a process that creates belief or disbelief through an appeal to reason; and Persuasion is a process that creates belief and disbelief through an appeal to the emotions. Conviction makes the truth clear; persuasion makes it interesting. Conviction drives one to accept the truth; persuasion leads one to embrace it”
