Guidelines and General Instructions for Mass Transfer Laboratory

(CH39006)
Instructors: Debasis Sarkar and G. Harikrishnan
Guidelines and General Instructions:

1. Know your Group from the uploaded document (Group_IE_ MT2021.pdf).

2. Each Group will “perform” the following five experiments. Laboratory Manuals for these
exeriments have been uploaded on MS Teams. Please read the Manuals thoroughly.

Sl. No. Experiment Experiment Title

No. in Manual
1 1 Measurement of diffusiity of carbon tetrachloride in air
2 2 Verification of Rayleigh’s equation for batch distillation
3 3 Separation of two miscible liquids in a sieve plate
distillation column
4 7 Studies on batch drying and generation of drying curve
5 9 Liquid-liquid extraction in a packed bed column

3. Please read “YourAssignment.pdf” to know about the “Experimental observations” for

each of the five experimets and your assignments on these experiments. Considering these
as your “observed data”, prepare your Laboratory Report following the guidelines as given
below. Additional data required can be obtained from any handbook/literature/internet
resource/etc . Some of the references are given at the end of this document.

Your report should contain

a) Title
b) Objective
c) Experimental details
d) Results and discussion
e) Sample calculations
f) Conclusions (highlight precautions, sources of error)

4. Submit the soft-copy (pdf only) of your Report (one Report per group) on MS Teams by
May 28, 2021. The coverpage must have Group details (names and Roll Numbers).

5. You will appear (individually) for a viva-voce examination during May 29-30, 2021 on
MS Teams. More details will be shared in due course of time.
