Assignment 5

Goals:

1. The primary goal of assignment is for you to start using a planning template for preparing
your decisions for period 1. The focus will be on production planning.
2. You will need to enter the decisions at iBizSim.
3. You will need to submit two documents at Moodle.

Assumptions and restrictions for the repeat of period 1:

I will roll back iBizSim to period 0 so that you are once again planning decisions for period 1.

I want you to assume that the demand for the two products in the two markets in period 1 will
be about the same as it was in the initial situation period 0. The only change to the demand
would be caused by the time-based factors state of the economy and product life cycle.

This assumption requires you to not take any decisions that would affect the demand. If you look at
the table on page 30 of the user manual, you will see in that the following sales decisions affect the
demand directly or indirectly via image:

Price policy
Communication policy
Product policy
Training of sales personnel

I also want to restrict you from taking any production decisions that would affect the product quality.
The production decisions that you are not allowed to change are:

Total quality management

Finally, you are not allowed to change the decision for payment of dividends in the company
decisions.

I am defining these restrictions to ease you into the process of planning decisions using templates.

Using the planning template for making decisions:

1. Download the planning template I have prepared for period 1. This template focuses on
production planning because the bottleneck that your company is facing at the end of period
0 is in production.
2. Understand the color coding that I have used in my template. The colors tell you which
reports you need to access for getting the relevant data.
3. Always start with the left-most tab in my template and work your way from left to right. Note
that the right-most tab “Decisions” simply summarizes the decisions from the other tabs.
The fields and values in this tab are the only ones that you should enter into iBizSim. Leave
all other fields and values of the decision entry forms of iBizSim unchanged.
4. Always start at the top of each tab and work your way from top to bottom. Note that you
must not change the contents of any cells that have formulas. I have marked these cells with
the color orange. Also, note that you must enter your planning decisions in the cells colored
yellow. Entering such a cell with the value 0 is also a decision. These planning decisions are
the implementation of your strategy.
5. When you come to the production plan, you will see that your company does not have the
capacity in the single shift to produce the quantity required by the markets. The alternatives
available to you in my template for period 1 are to use overtime, order new machines and/or
outsource by ordering bought-in goods.
6. My template does not evaluate the costs and benefits of the alternatives available to you. Do
it in a separate spreadsheet.
7. You will have finished your planning for period 1 once you have worked you way from left to
right and completed the purchasing plan.
8. Save the planning template frequently because the operating system that you would normally
use, some version of Microsoft Windows, has a habit of freezing and aborting.

Entering your decisions in iBizSim:

1. Only one member of your team should log in at iBizSim and enter the decisions from the
“Decisions” tab of the planning template. He/she must log out immediately after the allowed
decisions have been entered.
2. Each member of the team should then log in at iBizSim, download the decisions report and
log out immediately.
3. Each member should crosscheck with the planning template and confirm that the decisions
have been entered correctly.
4. In case any decision entry errors are spotted, the decision entry member of your team should
log in again at iBizSim, make the appropriate corrections and log out.

5. The steps 2, 3 and 4 should be repeated until all team members have confirmed that there are
no decision entry errors made at iBizSim.

Submissions:

I want each team to submit the following documents:

1. The planning template that you used to plan the decisions for period 1:

This submission document must have as its name “BS2202A, Submission 5, Planning
template P1 Company x-y, your full name.xlsx”

2. The decisions report that you should download after your team has completed entering its
decisions for period 1. Rename that PDF file before uploading.

This submission document must have as its name “BS2202A, Submission 5, Decisions
report P1 Company x-y, your full name.pdf”

Note that the first document must be in XLSX format and the second document in PDF format.
Also note that these submissions are team submissions and not individual submissions. Only
one member of your team should submit the documents on behalf of the team.
Each team should nominate one team member to submit the required documents on time.
The documents must be uploaded on Moodle before the submission deadline.
