Internet Addiction
Internet Addiction
Internet addiction is a behavioral addiction in which a person becomes dependent on use of the
Internet, or other online devices, as a maladaptive way of coping with life's stresses. Internet
addiction is becoming widely recognized and acknowledged, particularly in countries where it is
affecting large numbers of people, such as South Korea, where it has been declared a national
health problem. Much of the current research on the subject of Internet addiction has been
carried out in Asia. It is also a growing concern in developed nations in North America and
Europe.
Increasingly, addiction to mobile devices, and addiction to social networking sites, such as
Instagram, are being investigated.
As Internet addiction is not formally recognized as an addictive disorder, it may be difficult to get
a diagnosis. However, several leading experts in the field of behavioral addiction have
contributed to the current knowledge of symptoms of Internet addiction.
Despite the agreement that excessive Internet use is a key symptom, no one seems able to
define exactly how much computer time counts as excessive.
While guidelines suggest no more than two hours of screen time per day, this is unrealistic for
people who use computers for work or study. Some authors add on with “for non-essential use,”
but for an Internet addict, all computer use can feel essential.
Here are some questions from Internet addiction assessment instruments that are said help to
evaluate how much is too much..
1. stay online longer than you intended?
2. hear other people in your life complain about how much time you spend online?
3. say or think, “Just a few more minutes” when online?
4. try and fail to cut down on how much time you spend online?
5. hide how long you’ve been online?
According to reports if the answer to even three of the questions is yes, then their are high
chances of one being an internet addict.
But the main question is what exactly on internet people tend to get attracted or addict to?
While discussing that what's there on internet people are being addicted to,
At least three subtypes of Internet addiction have been identified: video game addiction,
cybersex or online sex addiction, and online gambling addiction.
First two are found to be most prevailing amongst the major teenage groups, while the third
point is prevelent in children of well to do families....
Online gambling and video gaming are correlated these days since real money investment is
being done in video games.
The vedio games that have violent set up, induce violent behaviour in children, children tends to
be violent and less emotional.. They become comfortable in physically hurting others, as in
game.
Many such examples are seen in recent times.
But the second point is considered the most serious one, by the psychologists...
Since this sort of content pollute young minds and sometimes leads to serious crimes, children
starts to fantasie the content in real and end up commiting grave mistakes.
More adverse consequences of excess use of Internet have been observed such as cyber
bullying.. Children unaware of the persons intention, engross themselves in chatting to them,
share personal things to them and then experience several consequences, it isn't necessary
that they are the victim only sometime on influence children do become the perpetrators.
When they are forced to drop their Internet habits they even become violent and we have seen
cases of violent crimes by them.
When we further look into the matter, that how children adopt such behaviour then following
points came into major notice :-
1. Peer pressure - children under pressure of their fellow students start accessing such stuff and
gradually become addicted to.
2. Curiosity due to improper knowledge/guidence -
Children through advertisements on youtube and TV get to know about games and sites and
start accessing them,
Since teenage is an age of hormonal changes, then the increasing curiosity to know more about
it start surfing the Internet and start accessing the improper stuff.
3. Loneliness - children with working parents, are often pushed towards technology to fulfill their
need of company, they have unlimited access to Internet, with no one to keep a check on...
Such children are most vulnerable to Internet addiction.
DOS
Firstly provide children some other intresting alternative other than the Internet, engross them
into some sport, or vocational activity.
Start Spending more time with them start discussing your childhood with them or share some
fun memories, create a relaxed atmosphere around them.
Try to know what all they do over Internet, and indirectly provide them information that I how it is
harmful and it isn't good. It is a gradual process one shouldn't rush it.
DON'TS
Never force the children to drop it all of a sudden, they get offended and the consequences
could be worse.
Never go straight forward to it, children will sneak out of your notice and ditach themselves from
you.
Don't be over involved in their life then your usual routine, children will find it as interference.
Today's generation is not same as earlier, if we try to force something on them they feel
offended and detach themselves, they feel themselves more comfortable with strangers, as they
believe that they will won't be judged.
