intercultural communication acknowledges the coexistence of

multiple cultures in a single space. However, it goes one step
further by focusing on the productive encounters that are constantly
taking place between cultures.

cross-cultural communication is the comparison between two (or

more) cultures.

Communicating
Across Cultures
○ High-context vs. low-
Cross-cultural
context
○ Sequential vs.
synchronic
○ Affective vs. neutral
22

High context culture ( Mediterranean,

Slav, Central European, Latin America,
African, Arab, Asian, American-
Indian) leave much of the message
unspecified, to be understood
through context, nonverbal cues, and
between the lines interpretation of
what is actually said.
23

Low context culture

(Germanic and
English-speaking
countries) expect
messages to be
explicit and specific.
24
Sequential cultures (Like North
American, English German,
Swedish, and Dutch), as a
linear commodity to “spend”,
“save” or “waste”.; business
people give full attention to
one agenda item after
another.
25

Synchronic cultures, (South America,

southern Europe and Asia) viewed
time as a constant flow to be
experienced in the moment, and as a
force that cannot be contained or
controlled; time as a sort of circle
(past, present, future) ; for long term
planning
26

Affective (readily
showing emotions) like
Italy, France, U.S.,
Singapore
27

Neutral ( normal business

activities, neutral cultures
are more careful to monitor
the amount to emotion they
display.) like Japan,
Indonesia, UK, Norway,
Netherlands
