FA.1 Hazard Mapping & Community Disaster and Awareness Plan

Figure 1.1 Lower Bicutan Hazard Map, 2022.

Figure 1.1 is an own self-concept hazard map to help and guide the residents of Brgy. Lower

Bicutan to find the nearest evacuation sites and to know where are the prone areas of risks and hazards.

Today, almost all of the residents of Lower Bicutan did not know where to go in times of fortuitous

events and this map shows all possible places to go and could also help them to be aware if ever

something happens.
Importance of Hazard Mapping in the Community

Today, hazard mapping has been established in different barangays and puroks to help people
who are damaged or to prepare them for different calamities and typhoons. We all know that natural
disasters are hard to predict. When we are talking about natural disasters, hazard mapping is a helpful tool
to protect and prevent us from fortuitous events. Well, everyone has no knowledge where to go in times
when they are damaged by unexpected events.

To better understand hazard mapping, it is a map composed of colors, letters, and information to
help people better know and understand how the risks of natural disasters can affect them or the whole
community. Actually, a hazard map was useful at the beginning and middle of a pandemic to know where
the nearest hospitals are and free tents for people who are tested positive from Covid-19. Although people
in my community did not know what a hazard map is, it is important for us to let them know that we have
this kind of tool to protect them from unexpected events. In my barangay, we have our own hazard maps
posted in our barangay hall or it was posted on the official Facebook page of our barangay. But yet, the
majority of the people in my community are not aware of it. I think it is because many of the people
nowadays have access to devices and the internet, that they are complacent about what they are seeing on
social media, or they are depending on the announcements.

According to my father who is working as a barangay kagawad, there are different programs in
our city or barangay where the discussion centered on awareness of the residents. One of the many
programs is fire prevention and earthquake awareness since our place has a lot of gas stations and major
fault lines were found in our place. They discuss how people should act at those times and how can they
prevent themselves.

To sum it up, hazard mapping is an important tool that should be required to be posted at the
different municipalities in our country for people to be aware of different kinds of risks and fortuitous
events. It is a helpful tool to prevent them from having damaged physically. It is truly hard to predict
things made by nature and the only way to survive is to have knowledge about preventive acts and a
prayer.
Figure 1.2 Community Disasters and Awareness Plan

Figure 1.2 is an own self-concept community disasters and awareness plan. It is an important tool
to protect people from the events expected to happen like earthquakes, floods, fires, and other disastrous
events. It is also used to have knowledge on how to act before and after the events occurred. This simply
means that community disasters and awareness plans are helpful for us to know simple instructions to
avoid physical damages and losses.
Community Disasters and Awareness Plan

I believe that being prepared is better than curing a disease. Creating a community disaster and
awareness plan taught me to be more observant in my surroundings, prepare myself in different situations,
and be aware. As a student, my knowledge in academics is not enough to survive different disasters. This
is one of the reasons why I create an awareness plan, to protect myself, to protect my family, and to
protect my community.

Growing up in a disaster-prone area country, I see how my community acts in different

calamities, typhoons, fires, floods, and earthquakes. This is why our municipality has a simple offer to our
community and that is enhancing the knowledge of everyone to avoid losses. Different programs like the
fire prevention programs are helping my community to know what causes fire and how to recover from it.
To prevent earthquakes, in school here in Taguig, every month, we are having an earthquake drill where
drop, cover, and hold are taught. During different disasters happened, I believe that LGU has helped the
community to give the necessary needs of the people and to evacuate them to higher ground or evacuation
sites.

During the pandemic, these programs are temporarily invisible because of health protocols. Now
since my community cannot exercise these drills and preventive acts, it is necessary for us to create an
alternative way. This is what we called the community disasters and awareness plan where information
about risks and preventions was written on the poster and should be posted in different online sites or
government facilities for us to be aware and to think about what we should do when disasters come to us.
I strongly believe that being aware and knowledgeable about different community disasters can help the
community to increase the level of emergency preparedness effort.

By the act of sharing figure 1.2 or the community preparedness plan on social media, it is a big
help to increase awareness of my residents and to practice different preventive acts even at home. Sadly,
this pandemic had forced programs to not continue sharing their agenda but because of the help of this
community preparedness plan, it already creates a cure to unexpected events. Therefore, we should not
just sit and look when community disasters came to us, I know that we can do something alternatives but
still, I believe that preparation is better than anything after all.
