study, target population, sampling technique and sample size,
instruments, data collection, data processing and analysis, key findings
and major recommendations.
- Should not exceed a page and minimum 2/3 of a page

E) Table of contents – The rubric should be in title case and single spaced.
- The chapter titles should be in caps and bold.
- The subheadings should follow each chapter title and should be in
title case.

CHAPTER 1 - INTRODUCTION

This chapter should include the following;

1.1. Background
Discus existing solutions and their limitations/problem.
Should be about ¾ page
1.2. Statement of the problem
Describe the problem faced in the society due to use of the available
systems which will be addressed by your project
About 3 paragraphs.
1.3. Significance
Highlight benefits which will be accrued by use of your project in the
society i.e. benefits the society will get.
1.4. Objectives
Main objective
To design, construct and test ………..(insert name of your product)
Specific objectives……...(they should be four and SMART. Specify
three specific aims of the product you are constructing)
(i)
(ii)
(iii)
1.5. Block diagram
Must be in subunits that can be developed independently and tested
before interconnection.
1.6. Block diagram analysis.
Explain the functions of each block. (Circuit diagrams should not be
given at this point).
1.7. Specifications
Definite Technical specifications expected of the inputs and outputs of
your system/product. e.g. voltage, current, power, frequency,
resistance.
Example
Mains supply voltage = 240v ac
Operating frequency = 50Hz.
Power rating = 100watts
Output voltage = 5v dc
Note:
 Use passive voice in the documents
 The tense for the project proposal is future tense
 One sentence paragraphs are unacceptable.
 A paragraph should have a minimum of five sentences.
MAY 2019 2
 Table of contents should be followed by:
 List of figures/ tables. It should be labeled as per the
chapters in which they are found e.g. the first figure in
chapter one should be labeled as Figure 1.1
1.8. The scope : where the product would be used (environment)
1.9. Significance: What would be the benefits and who would benefit from
your product
Formatting;
a. Paragraphing should be
consistent. Use spacing between
paragraphs.
b. Line spacing- 1.5

c. One space between two

paragraphs
d. Alignment for text is Justified

e. Project Proposal – 10 pages

CHAPTER 2 –LITERATURE REVIEW

For each module, analysis and the selection of the units which will be
used.
For example, a project that has transducer, signal conductor and
amplifier as some of its modules:
2.1 Transducer
Types of transducers (i) Capacitive (ii) Inductive (iii) Resistive
2.1.1 Capacitive transducer
- with the aid of a diagram describe its operation
-highlight its limitations that makes it unusable for your project
2.1.2 Inductive transistor
- with aid of a diagram, describe its operations
- highlight its limitations as far as this project is concerned
2.1.3 Resistive transducer
-with the aid of a diagram, describe its operations
-highlight its limitations that makes it unsuitable for your project
Choice of transducer
-the designer chose resistive transducer because of the following reasons
(i)

CHAPTER 3 - METHODOLOGY

Methodology is an explanation on how the general Objective set out at the

beginning, will be achieved.
(in the proposal, it argues out that the method is the best. In the report, it allows
readers to anticipate the results and for reproduction of the product by someone
else)
The language can be passive or active. But passive is preferable. E.g. 250ml of
distilled water will be/was poured into 100ml glass beaker. 50g of mixture A will
be/was added to the water. The mixture will be/was gently shaken for two
minutes. Changes in color and translucence during the mixing process will
be/was observed and recorded immediately after shaking and after five minutes
of settling.
For each of the module selected for design and construction
 Draw its diagram
 Detail its methodology
 Use technical specifications from data book and standard formulas to
determine the value each component.
Example
3.1 Resistive transducer
Draw its diagram
Use technical specifications from data book and standard formulas to
determine the value of each component used in construction of the unit
(transducer)
3.2 Single stage amplifier

MAY 2019 4
Technical specification
VCC = 12 v
VBE = 0.7 v
VCE = 3 v
ꞵ = 100
IB = 1 mA

VBB = IBRB + VBE

5v = 1mARB + 0.7v
4.3v = RB x 1x 10-3

RB = 4.3 = 4.3 KΩ
1 x 10-3

From the data book, the designer choses the value of RB to be 4.7kΩ

STRUCTURE OF TRADE PROJECT REPORT

The trade project report will include the above three chapters plus
chapter 4.
The report is in past tense while the proposal is in future tense.

CHAPTER 4 – RESULTS AND DISCUSIONS

4.1 Data analysis

It includes a table of expected values and measured values for the modules

MAY 2019 5
Example:

Test Expected values Measured values

points
Voltages Waveforms Voltages Waveforms
1 9v 7.9v

2
3
4
4.2 Findings
Discus the results in 4.1.
Highlight reasons for the deviations of measured values from expected
values.
4.3 Recommendations
Advise any other designer, on the components which can be incorporated
in the project to increase the efficiency, reliability etc.
4.4 Conclusions
