To what extent might freedom increase if people turn off their mobile phones
and computer screen. (May / June 2020)
Technology is both a blessing and a curse depends on how we use it. In the
contemporary world, people around the globe use technology and it has become
a vital part in our day to day life, as many people cannot live without it. It is
viewed as an achievement for some people and for certain not. Technology
sometimes has a bad reputation for leading people down scary paths of sexting,
identity theft, and introducing predators into their lives. However, technology
can streamline schedules, simplify work and home businesses, coordinate
activities, and much more. Enlightenment and freedom is a concept which was
invented long time back to declare the liberty of humans and to propagate a
well-developed and innovative society. When we talk about freedom, we talk
about the will, the wants and the desires of human beings. In this light, the
ultimate use of mobile phones and computer screens has not tarnished our
freedom, instead it is one step towards progress because everything is now
technology-oriented.
To start, technology has been a blessing in our lives in a certain way because
without it many things would have been impossible and unreachable.
Technology simplifies our everyday life and it is present almost everywhere
without one realizing. That is, many destinations have been made accessible due
to technology because of improved transport system. There are tgv, bullet trains,
airplane, cruise ships and so many more that are sign of technology and have
made destinations that are far away accessible within hours rather than days or
weeks. This is a great achievement that humans often not realize that without
those sophisticated technology we would be doomed. In addition, it is present in
every household across the world which has facilitated the task of many people
and is considered as a benediction. For example; dishwashers and washing
machines. As a result, they are free to manage the other affairs of their lives.
In addition, people sometimes claim that if they turn off their mobile phones
and computer screen, they would be more free. But one has neglect the fact that
with the advancement of technology around the world, there is ease of access to
information. One get to know what is happening around the globe with their
relatives, friends and foreigners. Technology has opened our mind, make us
view things differently beyond our mind. If we close those screens, how life
would be? The World Wide Web, abbreviated as www has made the world a
social village. This is because information from all around the globe is widely
available on the internet. While most of the news we get to see on social media
is purely factual, one may also see image results for particular news. Not only
more news is available, but all such information is also straightforward to
access. All thanks to modern technology and big screens like Dell, Apple, IBM
and tv. One can get to read a book in the comfort of their bed and a cup of
coffee. EBooks are available on the internet for this purpose. The modern
technology has replaced radios with televisions, and now even televisions have
been digitised to “LCD’s” and “LED’s”. Efforts are underway to create more
reliable sources of information. All this is possible only because of technology.
Besides, due to these screens and technologies that communications are now far
better accessible than it was before. It is a fact that modern technology has
replaced old technology. And we cannot imagine our lives without this
replacement. Letters were the most common mean of communication less than a
century ago, but now no one would even think of writing a letter because why
prefer a parchment on a video call?. Instant messaging and sharing of photos
and videos was never so easy before. We have to accept that it’s only the use of
technology, which makes it harmful otherwise nothing can beat the level of
comfort in our lives because of technology.
Conjointly, relationships have become better because people are connected to
each other all the time & there is little chance of misunderstanding due to
communication gap. But, on the downside, high-quality communication at low
costs has led to a marked decline in face-to-face communication. Also,
communication has become too concise & short. No matter where they go, who
they are with and when it is, they are bombarded with phone calls, email & text
messages. If they turn off these devices, they might have a higher risk of losing
great job opportunities. No one speaks face-to-face anymore everyone is so
busy with their smartphones and personal computers that they fail to notice
what's going on around.
Furthermore, if we decide to unplug ourselves from those screens, we will have
more time to focus on ourselves and see closely how things are going around us.
We will focus on our inner growth, appreciate ourselves and others as we will
have more time to observe things the way it is, we won’t be focusing on
scrolling across the screen. Also, it can be noticed that by not using too much
time on mobiles or computer, we have benefits from more peace of mind
because we do not mostly care what is going around the social media and focus
more on its positive side.
Before the evolution of technology, kids played far more better than kids in our
modern world. They were more active and brave. In Ancient Greece, there were
no manufactured toys beyond small pottery figures and rag dolls, so children
had to be resourceful. Often, children would play with balls made from rags or
inflated pigs’ bladders and use the ankle bones of sheep to play various catching
games. But now children are stuck on mobile screens not playing games that
will strengthen their bones.
Ultimately, as a modern, successful human in today’s busy world, we have to be
wise in order to best utilize technology, limit its unwanted effect of technology
on our relationship.
