Chapter 1 Preparation at Base

Descriptions
SCOPE
The purpose of this guide is to provide the preparation of the
plug setting tool at the base and establish a single-system
procedure for all field operators, so that each member of the
service team will know what his responsibilities are and perform
his duties efficiently and safely.
It is the purpose of this manual to detail the job responsibilities
for Field Engineer, Maintenance Engineer, Senior Operator
(Mechanic) and Operator, so the process can be performed
professionally. However, it is beyond the scope of this manual to
cover each and every situation that can conceivably arise. Only
the more explicit duties will be discussed. It shall be your
responsibility to become familiar with job functions not discussed,
but which are necessary for the performance of a professional
service.
The documents ensure equipment reliability by defining the test
procedures and maintenance routine.

1.1 Introduction
The Model "E-4" Wireline Pressure Setting Assembly is a device
in which the products of combustion are utilized for the gradual
development of force through pressure . This motive force
operates the various working parts of the Pressure Setting
Assembly in a sequence to ensure the successful setting of
Bridge Plugs, Retainer, Production Packers or Cement
Retainers.
In this manual, the CNLC made size-20 Pressure Setting
Assembly is taken as the reference tool for operation steps
description.

1.2 Well Data Collection

The following pre-job well data information is needed for the job
preparation at base.

 Casing Size and Weight

For selection of correct size plug setting tool and junk catcher

Operation Instructions ● ○ ○

BRIDGE PLUG SETTING SOP Page 27 of 53
Operations

4.1 Operation Instruction

Step1: Rig up as for a perforation job.

Step2: Pick up Pressure setting assembly to rig floor.

NOTE
It is strongly recommended that the first run into hole is the
junk catcher with the gauge ring to determine if the casing ID
is large enough to permit subsequent passage of the setting
tool. To achieve this, a gauge ring is run on the junk catcher.
In addition, the junk catcher serves to clean the well of junk
that might otherwise foul the tool and cause a premature set.
The gauge ring OD is, in all cases, slightly larger than the
setting assembly that is to be run, ensuring that the setting
assembly will pass through any tight spots in the casing that
can be passed by the gauge ring.

Always ask the client if you can run a junk catcher/gauge

ring before the setting tool. Stress the importance of this
when running equipment with a small clearance (usually
production packers). When running junk catcher, always
look at what is inside when it gets to surface. If there are
pieces of rubber, or other material that may cause the setting
assembly to get stuck or have difficulty getting down, then
explain to client, and request another run with junk catcher.
China National Logging Corporation CNLC/WL/BPSSOP-A0
BRIDGE PLUG SETTING SOP Page 28 of 53
Operations

Step3: Zero tool at CCL and run in hole.

Step4: Run in hole at 5000 ft/hr with plug or packer. Monitor

casing collars on the way down to ensure that tool is
moving. Come up at intervals to check the tension.

NOTE
In deviated wells (greater than 30o it may not be possible to
get a setting tool run on wireline past a downhole liner top.
Warn the client of this prior to running.

Step5: When running especially with very heavy assemblies,

run in slowly and stop very gently. A rapid stop could set
the plug prematurely. If any problems occur getting
down, pull out immediately for a scraper trip, do not try
and get down past a restriction.

Step6: Stop below the setting depth, log at speed of 1800ft/hr.

Step7: After tie in on depth, make a correlation log no less than

5 joints.

NOTE
If there is no short joint near the setting depth, you might
need to make a long interval correlation pass to contain the
short joint in log, this can be done by logging down while run
in hole.
China National Logging Corporation CNLC/WL/BPSSOP-A0
BRIDGE PLUG SETTING SOP Page 29 of 53
Operations

Step8: Go down again at least one joint below the setting depth,
log up slowly and stop the winch.

Step9: Show your witness that it is on depth; obtain his

agreement before setting the plug.

Step10: Position one operator to stand on the back of the

logging unit to hold the cable.

Step11: Apply power smoothly, maximum 1.5A current may be

required depending on the cable length; observe three
indicators of successful setting:

 Current shock while firing

Cable shock while firing and plug setting

Cable tension decrease after plug has been set

NOTE
The Baker slow set charge is designed to provide a slower
setting speed. A longer setting time generally increases the
reliability of the packing element, seal and slips. Setting
times for the slow set charge range from 10 to 200 sec. Do
not pull out early.

Step12: After confirming the plug has been set, log up at speed
of 1800ft/hr, finish the log after at least 5 joints.
China National Logging Corporation CNLC/WL/BPSSOP-A0
BRIDGE PLUG SETTING SOP Page 30 of 53
Operations

Step13: Pull out at a speed no more than 20,000ft/hr. Slow

down the speed to less than 2000ft/hr within 100m
below the surface.

Warning
After the firing head and adapter have been run and fired,
gas under very high pressure will be trapped inside the tools.
THIS PRESSURE MUST BE BLED OFF BEFORE
DISASSEMBLY IS BEGUN. FAILURE TO COMPLY WITH THE
FOLLOWING BLEEDING INSTRUCTIONS MAY RESULT IN
SERIOUS INJURY. Safety glasses, gloves and long sleeves
must be worn while bleeding pressure off of the downhole.
The tools should always be bled in a well ventilated area.

Step14: Never disconnect the cable head from firing head

when the pressure setting assembly out of the hole,
high residual pressure will be trapped inside.

Step15: Bring the tool to a open area, put down the tool so that
the bleeder valve facing up. Locate the bleeder valve
vent hole next to the bleeder valve; make sure this vent
hole is pointing away from all personnel. Use the
manual bleeder valve wrench or the correct size Allen
wrench to back out the stem until the pressure bleeds
off.

Step16: Rig down after the pressure has been bled off
completely,
