1. Eruption of Taal Volcano in Batangas province on Jan. 12

2. A 6.6 magnitude earthquake struck the province of Masbate in the Bicol
Region.

WHAT’S NEW
Activity 1.1 Understanding Disaster

1. In two to three sentences, describe the given images.

ANSWER: A disaster are highly disruptive events; it can be natural or
man-made event that negatively affects life. The picture shows the
aftermath of a disaster wherein we see destruction of properties,
destruction of assets, loss of services, social and economic
disruptions, environmental degradation and people dealing with a wide
range of physical and emotional stress.
2. List down the disasters that you can identify from the images.
ANSWER: typhoon, tsunami, flood and earthquake

5. MAN-MADE
6. NATURAL

Guide Question: Based on the presented images, how will you differentiate
natural from man-made disasters? Explain your answer in 2-3 sentences.
Write your answer on a separate sheet of paper.

ANSWER: Natural disasters are major adverse events caused by the earth's
natural processes. It can be accidental deaths of rivers due to lightning,
sudden heavy rain or terrible floods due to heavy rainfall, earthquakes,
volcanic eruptions, etc. Man-made disasters are often the result of
problems in our complex technological society. It could be spills or even
leaks of highly toxic chemicals, the effects of deforestation, etc.

Given the table, give a natural disaster you experienced within your
locality or you had heard from the news recently. What makes it a natural
disaster?
1. Give a man-made disaster you experienced within your locality or you had
heard from the news recently.
NATURAL DISASTER MAN-MADE DISASTER
Heavy rainfall vehicular accident
Floods burning house
earthquake power cuts
drought road collapses
thunderstorms

Activity 1.4 Understanding Disaster Risk

Disasters Classification of Disaster Risks

Disaster (Natural or (Effects)
Man-Made)
1. typhoon NATURAL Causing casualties and
extensive damage to
property, public
infrastructure (roads,
bridges, seaports,
airports) and the
agricultural sector.
2. war conflicts MAN-MADE lead to forced
displacement, chronic
refugee problems and
destruction of
infrastructure. Social,
political and economic
systems may be
permanently damaged.
3. volcanic eruption NATURAL Post-volcanic health
problems include
infectious diseases,
respiratory illnesses,
burns, injuries from
falls and vehicle
accidents related to
the slippery, hazy
conditions caused by
the ash.
4. chemical leakages MAN-MADE cause severe burns when
touched, damage to
vision, and damage to
respiratory tract.
5. vehicular accident MAN-MADE Mental and emotional
harm after a car
accident may include
mental distress,
emotional distress,
fear, anger,
humiliation, anxiety,
shock, embarrassment,
random crying, loss of
appetite, weight
fluctuations, low
energy, sexual
dysfunction, mood
swings, and sleep
disturbance.
6. earthquake NATURAL The main effects of
earthquakes are ground
shaking, ground
rupture, landslides,
tsunamis and
liquefaction.
7. drought NATURAL Droughts can also lead
to long-term public
health problems,
including: Water
shortages and poor
quality drinking water.
Effects on air quality,
sanitation and hygiene,
and food and nutrition.
More diseases, such as
West Nile virus carried
by mosquitoes that
breed in stagnant
water.
8. thunderstorms NATURAL High winds from
thunderstorms can
damage homes, overturn
cars, uproot or damage
trees, or knock down
utility poles, causing
widespread power
outages. Hail causes
billions of dollars in
damage to crops and
property each year and
can harm people or
animals left outdoors.
9. tuberculosis MAN-MADE feelings of sickness or
weakness, weight loss,
fever, and night
sweats.
10. rainfall-induced NATURAL Many rainfall-induced
landslide landslides turn into
debris flows (fast-
moving mud of water,
soil, and rock) as they
travel down steep
slopes, especially
those that enter river
channels, where they
may mix with additional
water and sediment.
11. floods in rivers NATURAL Flash floods often wash
and coastal areas away some trees along
the river, and these
floods can damage
buildings, roads,
bridges, etc. Heavy
rains from hurricanes
or tropical storms can
cause coastal flooding,
causing seawater to
flow inland.
12. avalanche NATURAL An avalanche can block
anything in its path.
Roads and railways can
be blocked. Power can
be cut off. Powerful
avalanches can even
destroy buildings and
kill people.
13. tsunami NATURAL Most tsunami damage can
cause flooding, wave
impact, erosion, strong
currents and floating
debris.
14. bomb explosion MAN-MADE A nuclear explosion
produces an air shock
effect similar to that
produced by
conventional
explosives. Shockwaves
can directly injure
humans by tearing
eardrums or lungs or
throwing people at high
speed, but most
casualties occur
because of collapsed
structures and flying
debris.
15. burning house MAN-MADE In a home fire, levels
of carbon monoxide and
carbon dioxide can
increase, as can
chemical and thermal
irritants. These
irritants can
permanently damage the
respiratory system of
humans or animals and
cause death.

What I Have Learned

3 Things I learned Today

- I learned the concept of disaster.
- I learned how and when an event turns into a disaster as well as the
different kinds of disasters.
- I learned how to recognize the importance of understanding disaster
risks and how they may effect a person's life.
2 Things I Found Interesting
- The reason or factors that affects Philippines to become prone of
natural disasters.
- The classification of disaster and also the disaster risk(effect).
1 Question I have
- What are the proper ways on how to cope with the aftermath of a
disaster?

What I Can Do
Activity 1.5 Am I Ready?
1. The first thing to do is to identify hazards in the home to lessen the
impact of a disaster.
2. Establish disaster gathering places and family contacts.
3. Develop adequate reservoirs because water is necessary for food
preparation and hygiene.
4. Prepare food supply, it is wise to stock some food in an event of a
major catastrophe.
5. Store emergency supply, make sure the emergency supply is stocked with
essential items and kept it in an easily accessible location.
