Q.1 Binomial probability distribution with example [5]

Q.2 Correlation with example [5]

Q.3 Sleeping hours and concentration capacity scores for the students are recorded and given
below. Calculate the pearson’s correlation coefficient for the data. [5]

Concentratio 10 12 14 13 16 18
n capacity
Sleeping 6 7 7 6 8 8
hours

Q.4 To compare their efficacy, 2 sleep producing drugs were tested independently on 5
patients. The following data gives the amount of sleep (in hours) the patients had after
taking the drugs.

Drug A 6 2 4 5 3
Drug B 3 6 7 2 6

Check whether the drug A and drug B have same sleeping hours? [5]

Q.5 Properties of normal distribution and standard normal distribution [5]

Q.6 There was an epidemic of jaundice in a slum area in a large city. Of the 15000 residents in the
area 1000 came down with jaundice. Ten of them died. During the year the crude death rate was
10/1000.
What was the overall attack rate for jaundice?
What was the case fatality rate for jaundice?
What was the cause specific mortality for jaundice?
What was the proportionate mortality for jaundice?
Only 1000 cases occurred. Water was the most likely transmission route? What explanations can
be given for the rest not coming down with the illness? [5]
Q.7 A cross sectional study was carried out to measure the prevalence of malnutrition among
under 5 children is rural areas of Vellore district.  400 children were selected using simple
random sampling technique.  The investigator reported that the prevalence of malnutrition
was 10% with a 95% CI of 7% to 13%
(a) What does the investigator mean by simple random sampling?  How is this done
(b) What does the investigator mean by 95% confidence interval?
(c) What can be done to make the interval narrower? [5]

Q.8 In a study to measure the effect of high dose Vit. A prophylaxis on risk of child hood pneumonia
the following methodology was used
All 120 children with pneumonia admitted to a secondary care hospital during the study period
were enrolled and careful history was taken to see if they had received Vit A prophylaxis during
the past 6 months.  A similar number of children with mild respiratory infection seen in the
outpatient department were also enrolled and similarly assessed.  Among children with pneumonia
20 had received Vit A prophylaxis as compared to the other group where 100 had received Vit A
prophylaxis.
(a) Name the type of study design providing reasons
(b) Calculate the relevant measure of association
(c) Interpret the above measure
(d) What errors could creep into the study [5]

Q.9 Explain the advantages of cohort Study? [5]

Q.10 Reasons for blinding in a clinical trial? [5]
