To maintain your gutters:

Clean Gutters: Check gutters regularly to make sure they are clean, and remove any
leaves or other debris.
Secure Gutters: To repair sagging or loose gutters, replace the gutter spikes with gutter
screws, using a cordless drill. Gutter screws hold much better than standard gutter spikes,
providing support and security.
Seal Leaks: Use a hose to check the joints and seams for leaks. To repair a leaking joint,
clean the area thoroughly and apply silicone caulk to seal it.
Repair Downspouts: Make sure that downspouts are clear of leaves and other debris,
and that any joints fit together properly.
Water Runoff: Check to see that the water coming out of downspouts is diverted away
from your home using splash blocks, a downspout extension, or irrigation pipe.

Lack of Maintenance
It is most common on flat or low-sloped roofs. Failure to correct an uneven roof will cause the
accumulation of sediments and water that will eventually destroy your material.

Design Problems
Design-related problems are expensive to correct, and normally the corrections must be done
while the replacement of the roofing material is undergoing. Some examples are:

 The weak structure supporting the roof that might deflect excessively
under active loads.
 Improper roof slope, sagging roof, or inadequate drainage system,
resulting in accumulation of water.
 Incorrect system to allow expansion and contraction of changes in deck
material or changes in direction.
 Incompatible roof materials.

Wind
The vacuum and the uplifting pressure created by wind, blowing over the edge of the roof, can
partially rip the roofing membrane or system that has been applied. To counteract the forces that
are exerted on the roof, the roofing and insulation must be fastened and secured to the perimeter
and the main roof structure.

Flashing Material
The function of the flashing is to provide a seal, a watertight seal, between roofing materials,
roof sections, and other parts of the building. It is an area that should be carefully inspected prior
to any other area. Incorrect installation procedure or attachment, and improper sealing of the
flashing will allow the water to enter between the roofing systems and the roof structure.
Sometimes, installing a flashing over a joint or cap will eliminate the problem if it is detected
early in the construction.
Incorrect installation and/or improper sealing of the roofing system and roof structure.

Base Flashing
Base-flashing problems also present some serious and important areas that you must inspect.
Some common causes are:
 An insufficient number of base-flashing piles.
 Improper height.
 Insufficient overlaps.
 Poor adhesion.
 Incorrect fastening to the surface.
 Insufficient coating.
 Loose insulation below.

Penetration Flashings
Either small or large penetration flashing can fail in several ways. As a matter of example:

 Improper design.
 Broken seams in metal curbs due to building movement.
 Deteriorated counter flashing.
 Improper finishing of metal surfaces.
 Standing water behind penetration curbs.

Drain Flashing
It is not as simple as installing lots of drain openings. The building’s drain system should consist
of reasonable drain openings, an adequate pitch from high point to drainage components. It is a
good practice to include overflow scuppers through different areas to avoid the accumulation of
water in case of an emergency. Proper maintenance should be given to all of these areas.

Roof Leaks – No matter what type of roof you have, if a leak develops you
have a problem. Your roofing is meant to act like a lid on a container. The
purpose of this lid is to keep everything inside dry. Once a leak compromises
that all you can hope to do is fix it in time to minimize the damage. There are
any number of reasons that leaks can occur; the concern is detecting them in
time and carrying out repairs and clean up in time.

should be given to all of these areas.

Rooftop Equipment
It is very easy to install the A/C compressor, the satellite antenna, and other
components directly to the surface. Proper attention should be given when this
kind of equipment is installed. They should never be mounted or placed directly
to the top of the roof membrane. They should be mounted to a support structure
or raised curb-type supports. Flat flange or curb flashing can then be used to
keep the roof watertight, and roof replacement and recovery can be done without
disturbing or removing the equipment.

Metal Base Flashings

These types of flashing will separate easily from bituminous materials. The
expansion and contraction rate of these two materials will produce cracks and
openings that will allow the water to enter and damage the surface. For these
reasons, metal base flashing should be replaced with a bituminous base flashing
whenever possible.

Roof Water Drain Types and Sizing

Roof drains for flat or low-slope roofs come in a few standard types. The best
type for the application depends on several factors, such as the size and slope of
the roof, the desired appearance, and how much regular maintenance the drain
system might need. Sizing the drains for each system, including the number of
drains required, is based on factors such as the roof area, the drain location(s),
the inflow rate and desired drainage rate, and the expected rainfall volume.

Sizing a Roof Water Drain

The first step in sizing a roof drain is to calculate the surface area of the roof that
the drains will be covering as well as the average hourly rainfall rate at the
building location. The next step is to determine each roof area that will be served
by a separate leader (drain pipe, scupper, or downspout). This information can
be obtained from the pipe or drain manufacturer.

Next, the roof area is divided by the area for each leader to determine the
number of drains required. Each leader must be large enough to handle the
volume of water to be drained—the greater the leader capacity, the fewer roof
drains are needed. In general, roof drains are spaced equally and are located in
low points of the roof or in any areas where water accumulates.

In addition to sizing factors, the choice of roof drain is based on several

considerations:
 Type of roof—design and materials
 Roof pitch
 Volume of average rainfall and storm design criteria (typically set by the
local building code)
 Rate of drainage
 Overflow requirements per local or state building code
 Roof load—how much water the roof can support if the drains are
obstructed; excess water can compromise the structural stability of a roof
 Drain locations
 Additional features, such as vandal-proofing

Gutter Systems
Conventional gutter systems, such as those used on most houses, are suitable
for some low-slope roofs that have a slope greater than 2 percent. (A slope of
less than 2 percent is considered a flat roof.) Gutters are simple and inexpensive
but require frequent cleaning. Even a small amount of blockage from debris can
cause a gutter to overflow. Located at the bottom edge(s) of the roof, gutters
typically are fully visible and have downspouts mounted to the side walls of the
building.

Scupper Drains
Scuppers are commonly used on flat roofs that have a parapet or other type of
perimeter barrier enclosing the roof. Scuppers are open holes or channels cut
into the roof edge or parapet. The roof is sloped toward the scuppers, and water
simply drains out through the scuppers. A scupper may drain into a downspout
on the exterior of the building, or it may have an extended chute or pipe that
directs a stream of water away from the building.

Inner Roof Drains

Inner roof drains are used on flat roofs and include a low section or channel that
collects water and feeds it into a concealed drain that leads to an underground
drainage system. The main benefit of inner drains is that the system is hidden
from view. Inner drains are resistant to freezing but can require careful
maintenance to prevent problems.

Siphonic Roof Drain

A siphonic roof drain utilizes siphoning as a drainage mechanism, resulting in
drainage that is faster than that on any other type of roof drain. Commonly used
on flat commercial roofs, siphonic drains allow for a minimal number of drains,
and all of the drains can be connected to a single leader. Siphonic drains
typically cost more than other drain systems, but they work smoothly and require
relatively little maintenance. Because the siphoning force helps move the water,
siphonic drain systems can employ horizontal leaders instead of sloped pipes,
which rely on gravity alone for drainage.

Gutter problem? You need a quick and affordable solution.

Gutters aren’t the sexiest home improvement project, but your gutters and fascia protect your
home from water damage that can destroy furniture, ruin your backyard, and even threaten the
structural integrity of your home.

If you’re reading this then you’ve likely got a gutter that’s seen better days, or you’ve started to
notice drips and leaks coming from your gutters. If that sounds like you, then you need to know
what it costs to organise a guttering replacement in Melbourne, whether it’s repair, maintenance
or full replacement.

How much does gutter replacement cost?

The price of gutter replacement in Melbourne will vary across each roofing company and you
may be charged by the hour or by the metre.

Most Melbourne guttering repairmen will charge between $40 and $60 per hour, though if you’re
charged per linear metre you can pay up to $150 a metre for premium materials.

The cost of your gutter replacement will be influenced by:

 Gutter material
 Time
 Location
 Length of guttering
 Complexity of the job

Length of guttering required

 The cost of your guttering service will be impacted by the length of your guttering
replacement.

Salvaging sections of your existing gutter is typically cheaper than a full gutter
replacement. While gutter replacements for larger homes and properties are
typically more expensive as there is more gutter to work with, more labour
required, and more materials needed.
Keep in mind, it’s not just the per-metre rate that will impact your quote. You’re
paying for labour, so it’s best to ask about total costs rather than linear metre
costs.

Complexity of the job

The price of your gutter service can increase depending on the complexity of the job.

For example, Melbourne homeowners may want to avoid a build-up of leaves every time the
wind blows (which is often when you call Melbourne home) and choose to add gutter guards as
a layer of protection. Naturally, extra products or services will increase your quote.

Or, your gutter replacement may require fasteners to attach gutters to your home, or scaffolding
to reach upper story gutters. Whether it’s downpipes, extensions, wire mesh screens or another
extra part, the complexity of your job will impact your quote.

OTHER FACTORS THAT AFFECT COST

How can you tell how much your gutters will cost so that you can prepare
for your gutter project? While the gutter materials have a lot to do with the
gutter cost, they are not the only determining factor. Here are a few other
factors that play into the total cost of your gutter replacement:

 The cost of labor in your area isn’t something that you can influence;
however, it will always work into your gutter cost and can explain
why a friend in another city had a more or less expensive project
than your gutter replacement.
 The size of your gutters  influences the cost of your gutters. While 5-
inch gutters are standard, if you want to have larger gutters you can.
However, you will likely need to pay more.
 The number of levels that your home has influences the cost of your
gutters. It’s more difficult to add gutters to a home with several
levels.
 Your gutter replacement cost also depends on the complexity of your
home’s layout. For instance, if your home has many peaks and valleys
and it not a simple rectangle or square, then it will be more difficult
to create or to cut gutters to the right size.
 Waste removal is another factor in gutter costs. Removing the old
gutters may cost between $13 to $15 for each 25-foot segment that is
removed. Check to see if this will be part of your initial gutter
estimate.
 If you would like gutter covers or other items such as splash blocks and
downspouts, they generally come at an extra cost as well.

Gutter Replacement and

Installation Services
If your home in northern Virginia or Maryland experiences moisture issues after
heavy rain or snow, you aren't alone. Working gutters divert water away from your
residence, but damages can build up from the ravages of time and extreme weather.

That's why Fairfax County residents should call Roof-ER for gutter inspections. We

Signs of Gutter Damage

Homeowners should periodically check for gutter wear and deterioration. Look out for
these warning signs that suggest it's time to contact a gutter inspection company:

 Sagging or leaning gutters: Gutters can buckle or pull away from the fascia if the
fasteners are loose. Sometimes gutters separate from the home after branches or wildlife
weigh on them.
 Overflowing:Gutters cannot drain efficiently if debris, leaves or ice dams are clogging
the trough or downspout. A professional can safely perform regular gutter cleanings or
install a leaf guard.
 Separating gutter joints: Leaks occur where the gutter joints are misaligned, or the
sealant has worn away.
 Rust:Orange splotches on conventional gutters are a telltale sign of corrosion and
weakening.
 Cracks and splits:Some damaged gutters have open fissures along the troughs and will
drip water.
 Water staining:Moisture stains and discoloration on sidings or concrete can appear
when your gutters aren't protecting your home as they should.

Costs Associated With Damaged

Gutters
In most cases, clogged and aged gutters are a minor nuisance. But if left unaddressed,
you could have major home repairs to make from the moisture buildup, such as:

 Rotting roof, fascia or foundations.

 Pooling water in the basement or garage.
 Mold and mildew growth on the interior or exterior.
 Swollen or damaged siding.
 Standing water in the yard or gutters — prime breeding grounds for mosquitos.
 Damage to the landscape from soil erosion.

What is Roof Flashing, Why is it Important, and How Can I Install It?

Roof flashing is a thin material, usually galvanized steel, that professional roofers use to direct water
away from critical areas of the roof, wherever the roof plane meets a vertical surface like a wall or a
dormer. Flashing is installed to surround roof features, such as vents, chimneys and skylights. Water
should run down the side of the flashing and be directed to the shingles instead of finding its way into the
roof deck.

If there were no flashing against these walls, water could slowly drip into the crevice between
the wall and the roof, and potentially into the home.

Damaged or improperly installed roof flashing, especially around the chimney, roof cricket or
dormer, is one of the most common causes of roof leaks. According to the Federal Emergency
Management Agency, FEMA, improper roof flashing could lead to wood rot and even deck
collapse. So, chances are, if you’ve been looking into your roof and its flashing, you have
questions. What is roof flashing? How do you install roof flashing? What about repairing roof
flashing? You can find out here.

Roof Flashing

There are almost as many types of roof flashing as there are parts of the roof! After all, each roof
feature needs protection. These are the key types of roof flashing you need to understand:

 Continuous flashing: Continuous flashing is also called “apron flashing” because it acts

a lot like an apron. It’s a long, single piece of metal that carries water down to the
shingles below. Long pieces of continuous flashing will have trouble flexing as the home
expands and contracts in the changing seasons. If left as is, it could break or warp and fail
to keep water out. Therefore, long pieces have built-in expansion joints so they can move
with the home.
 Base flashing: Some roof features, such as chimneys, require two pieces of flashing. This
ensures that rain always meets a flashing surface that directs it downwards. Plus, it is
notoriously tough to install flashing around a chimney. There is another benefit to two-
part flashing: When the roof materials naturally expand and contract with weather
changes, the two pieces can move, so the whole system stays secure. The base flashing
(or apron flashing) is the bottom piece.
 Counter-flashing: Placed opposite to base flashing, or above base flashing, counter-
flashing completes the two-part team.
 Step flashing: Step flashing is a rectangular piece of flashing bent 90 degrees in the
center. It is used for roof to wall flashing. Multiple pieces of the flashing will be installed
in layers with shingles to ensure the water flows away from the wall. Learn how to install
it below.

Gutter Option for Installation or Replacement

Gutters are an essential part of any home. Safely transporting water away from your
home prevents water damage that can cause serious harm. Whether you are replacing
your old gutter system or installing on a new home, here is what you need to know
about the options you have.
Shapes
Today there are a few common shapes for gutters. The shape of your gutter will impact
how well it transports water, how easy it is to clean and how it will be fixed to your
home. Here are the most common types.
Half Round
As the name suggests, this style of gutter is shaped like a half cylinder. They are
generally found on older homes that were built before the 1960s. While they are great at
transporting water, they have two drawbacks; 1. They are prone to clogging and
blockages from leaves and other debris 2. They are not as deep as the other major
shapes and are less than ideal for areas with lots of rain. Because of the rounded shape,
this style of gutter doesn’t sit flush up against the fascia boards. This means that there
are generally visible hangers where the gutter is attached to the building.
K-Style
These gutters have a flat back that is installed flush against the fascia boards and a
decorative side facing outward. They are the most commonly used gutters and have
been for the last few decades. Homeowners and builders like this style because they look
great, they work well and can be made on-site. They are ideal for rainy climates because they
can hold and transport more water than the half round.
Fascia
Fascia gutters are either fixed directly to the fascia boards or can act as the fascia
board and gutter combined. They are generally custom built and usually requires
professional installation. These gutters are very popular on the Pacific Northwest
because can carry a large amount of water and they offer a seamless modern aesthetic.
Materials
The material used for your gutters will have an impact on cost, weight, durability,
complexity of installation, and aesthetics. Here are the most common gutter materials.
Steel
Steel gutters are very robust and can stand up to severe weather. The downsides to
steel gutters are their weight and vulnerability to rust. You could go for the stainless-
steel option, but expect to pay significantly more.
Vinyl
Vinyl is lightweight, inexpensive and DIY friendly. Unfortunately, you get what you pay for
with this material. Vinyl is the least durable of the gutter materials and is more prone to
cracking and other damage from the weather and any impacts or weight, like from a
ladder.
Copper
Copper is extremely durable and has a unique look that many homeowners like. New
copper gutters have a bright shine that transforms into a green patina over the years.
Unfortunately, it is not a DIY friendly material and is very expensive. This material is
generally only used on very high-end homes.
Zinc
Similar to copper, zinc is a highly durable material (though not quite at the level of
copper) used for gutters. It also develops a patina over time and is generally used in
higher-end homes. This material is expensive and not DIY friendly, and it is also
susceptible to corrosion from salt in the air or runoff from certain types of shingles.
Aluminum
Aluminum is the most used material for gutters. It’s a good material for a few reasons; it
is light and easy to install, won’t put extra stress on your hangers or fascia boards, it’s
affordable, not vulnerable to rusting, and it’s durable. This material provides a good
balance of durability and cost. One of the downsides of aluminum is that it is more
prone to denting than some of the much more expensive materials, however, it is still a
very durable material.
Construction
There are two common construction methods used today. These will impact ease of
installation and cost
Sectional
This construction method uses sections of gutters that are connected, creating seams.
This method is easy and inexpensive, so many homeowners opt for sectional gutters to
save a few bucks. The major drawback with this type of construction is that each seam
increases the likelihood of leaks.
Seamless
Seamless gutters are made from one piece of durable material, with joints only at
corners and downspouts. These gutters are much more resilient to weathering and less
likely to spring a leak. Installation of seamless gutters needs to be done by a
professional and is more expensive than sectional options.
Conclusion
Here in the Pacific Northwest, we have a need for quality gutters. The amount of rain we
get annually has the potential to wreak havoc on homes that aren’t protected with a high
functioning gutter system. That’s why SNUGS has gutter installation crews with the
latest equipment and knowledge to install a gutter on a new building, or replace the full
gutter system. We specialize with 5K, 6K, and Fascia gutter types. We only use
aluminum gutter materials for longer life of your gutter system. Our gutters are attached
with screws and hidden hangers to attach to your building better, and not come off as
easily. Our gutter systems come with corrugated downspouts for optimum flow and
less clogging. We have many different options to help protect your building and get the
water, and debris off your building.

Understand the Roofing Process

You'll be able to make advised decisions when hiring a roofing crew if
you understand the process, as well as the jargon used in the roofing
trade.

A moderately-sized, professionally-installed roofing job might take

only 3 or 4 days. The overall process followed by the roofing crew goes
like this:

1. Remove all existing shingles, deposit them in a roll-off

dumpster: Damaged or old valley flashing and drip edging is
also removed at this time. A good crew will use tarps to protect
foundation plantings and shrubs during tear-off and will use
magnetic tools to pick up nails and metal objects from the lawn.
2. Make minor repairs on the roof if it is in good condition: If
not, replace bad wood with new plywood sheathing or 1 x 6
sheathing boards, whichever is applicable to your type of roof.
3. Install ice dam protection in regions that require it: The ice
guard membrane is a synthetic waterproof barrier material
designed to prevent melting ice from backing up under the
shingles and penetrating through the sheathing, where the
moisture can cause severe damage.
4. Lay down asphalt roofing paper over the roof
sheathing: The layer of roofing paper creates an inner barrier
against water penetrating into the house. Rows of roofing paper
are overlapped as they progress upward toward the peak, and
are normally tacked or stapled in place.
5. Apply metal drip edging around the edge of the roof, both
the eave sides and gable sides: The metal drip edge is nailed
in place over the roofing paper or ice guard.
6. Where necessary, apply a new valley flashing along with
areas where two roof planes meet: The valley flashing is
typically nailed to the roofing deck and sealed with roofing caulk.
7. Apply the tab shingles, starting at the eaves and working
upward toward the peak: Where roof vents are being installed,
these are installed as the progress of the shingles toward the
peak.
8. Apply the flashing around all areas where leaks might
come into the house—against the chimney, around
skylights and stack vents, etc.: Flashing installation may
happen as part of the roofing installation, occurring as the rows
of shingles progress upward on the roof deck.
9. Install the ridge vent: This continuous vent along the peak of
the roof will help the air circulation in the attic space and can be
integral in exhausting hot air and preventing winter ice dams.
Ridge vents may not be included on older roofs, but installing
them is a good idea whenever a house is re-roofed. If ridge vents
are not practical, the should be other types of roof or gable vents
installed to provide air circulation in the attic space.
10. Complete the final cleanup and haul the debris
away: Have the installation inspected and approved by a
building inspector.

The roofing business uses some special terminology when estimating

materials for a roofing job.
 The term square, when used in the roofing business, is a unit of
area. One square equals 100 square feet.
 Shingles come in bundles. Three or four bundles of shingles
typically will cover a square of roofing area.

What Roof Pitch Is

Pitch describes the angle, slope, or slant of your roof.

Roof pitch designations are comprised of two numbers indicating a

ratio. The ratio can be shown by a division slash separating the
numbers, such as 2/12 or 7/12. Or, a colon can replace the slash, as
in 2:12 or 7:12. Either way, the notation designates a ratio between
two measurements of the roof—a numerator and denominator.

 Numerator: The numerator, or first number, refers to the

vertical (height) measurement of the roof.
 Denominator: The denominator, or second number, denotes the
horizontal (length) measurement of the roof. To make things a
bit easier, for roofing purposes the denominator is always 12.
Even though basic mathematics tells us that 12/12 can be
reduced to 1/1, this is not done with a roof pitch. The
denominator remains 12.

For example: A roof with a vertical measurement anywhere along its

slope of 2 feet and a horizontal measurement of 4 feet has a 2:4 pitch.
To adjust for roofing purposes, you would multiply the second number
by three. The first number must be multiplied by three, too. The roof
pitch, then, is 6:12.

How to Calculate Roof Pitch

To determine your roof pitch, hold a level with one end resting on the
roof. Lift the other end in the direction of the slope of the roof, with
the end resting on the roof at a higher point than the end you're
holding. Raise or lower the level until you get a level reading. Measure
out 1 foot from the end that is touching the roof. Measure down from
the 1 foot point to the roof. If it is 4 inches, you have a 4/12 pitch, and
so forth.

How to Calculate Roof Pitch From a Ratio

The pitch of a roof is nothing more than a ratio that indicates how
much rise there is in the roof over a 12-unit horizontal distance.

Example: Ratio of 5:12 or 5/12

When you see the ratio 5:12, this means that for every 12 horizontal
feet, the roof changes 5 feet in vertical height.

Example: Ratio of 8:12 or 8/12

When you see a ratio of 8:12, this means that for every 12 horizontal
feet, the roof changes 8 feet in vertical height.

For most home styles, roof pitches fall in a range 4/12 (a moderate)
slope up to 8/12 (fairly steep). Examples of extreme slopes range from
1/4:12 (almost flat) to 12/12 (sloping down at a perfect 45-degree
angle).

Roof Pitches and Roofing Materials

Very Low Roof Pitches: .25/12 to 3/12

Roof pitches with lower angles, such as 1/12 up to 3/12 are found in
more urban, contemporary style houses and in industrial buildings and
shacks. It was fashionable for modern-style homes built in the
1960s to have little pitch, just a barely negligible slope to help drain
water. Visually, this roof appears flat. This pitch might be as low as
1/12. The flat roofing materials most appropriate to these shallow-
sloped roofs include:

 Built-Up Roofing: Sometimes called tar-and-gravel, or BUR, the

modern form of this kind of roof consists of alternating layers of
bitumen and reinforcing fabrics.
 Torch-Down Roofing: This is a single layer membrane-style
roofing material that is heat-activated by a torch during
installation.
 Rubber Membrane: EPDM (short for ethylene propylene diene
monomer) is a true rubber that can be applied to a roof with glue
or mechanical anchors.
 Standing Seam Metal: These roofs are made from panels of
aluminum or steel joined together in raised seams. They can be
used on roofs with pitches as low as .25 /12. They are also used
on much steeper roofs.

Low Roof Pitches: 2.5/12 to 19/12

Clay or cement tiles can be used on a wide range of roof pitches. For

pitches of 2.5/12 up to 4/12, the roof requires double underlayment.
Slopes above 19/12 are not recommended since tiles on very steep
roofs can rattle.

Normal or Moderate Roof Pitches: 4/12 to 20/12

A great many residential roofs fall into this category. The roofing
materials most often used for these pitches include asphalt
(composite) shingles: Traditional 3-tab shingles made with asphalt
composite are the most popular type of shingle and are the most
flexible in terms of adapting to many roof pitches. These shingles are
appropriate for pitches as low as 4/12 pitch, all the way up to a 12/12
pitch. Think of them as taking the middle road in terms of roof pitch—
not too flat, not too steep.

High Roof Pitches: 5/12 to 12/12

Wood and slate shingles are used in many of the same types of roofs

as asphalt composite shingles, but may not be appropriate for roofs
near the lower end, since they are more susceptible to leaking. Wood
and slate shingles do not lock together as tightly as other types of
shingles.

Very High Roof Pitches: 18/12

Roofs on Victorian-era houses were often sharply angled with a steep

pitch. Think of an old house with its soaring peaks and you have a
picture of a high-pitched roof. This is one of the rare pitches where the
numerator is greater than the denominator, with a slope as high as
18/12.
Roofing Materials at a Glance
Most roof materials have a recommended pitch range for which they
are most appropriate. The rules can occasionally be broken, but
generally, you should not exceed the low range of the
recommendation.

For example, wood and slate shingles might work for roofs steeper
than the top recommendation of 12/12, but you should not install
them below the 4/12 lower range.

 Built-Up (BUR): .25/12 to 3/12

 Torch-down roofing: .25/12 to 3/12
 Rubber membrane: .25/12 to 3/12
 Standing-seam metal: 1/12 to 19/12
 Clay or cement tiles: 2.5/12 to 19/12
 Asphalt (composite) shingles: 4/12 to 20/12
 Wood and slate shingles: 5/12 to 12/12

Metal Roofs and Lighting

The misconception that metal roofs attract lightning is probably
because metal itself is known as a good conductor of electricity, and
people, therefore, assume that a metal roof must attract lightning. In
reality, when lightning strikes, it is seeking a path to ground and
almost always will strike whatever object is highest in the area that
also has a direct path to ground. Your metal roof is not grounded, and
thus lighting has no reason to strike it.

A metal roof in no way makes your home more vulnerable or

susceptible to lightning strikes.

Some Actual Disadvantages to Metal Roofs

Fear of lightning strikes may be an imaginary problem, but there are a
few genuine disadvantages to metal roofs.
The one disadvantage that poses an actual safety risk is the fact that
metal roofs are indeed slippery when wet or when covered with snow.
It is never a good idea to climb on a metal roof when it is moist or
covered with snow. They are so slippery that snow "avalanching" off
the roof is a definite hazard in areas that experience heavy snowfalls
in winter.

There are some advantages to this, since snow that slips off the roof
can't build up on top of it. People owning asphalt-shingled homes in
heavy snow areas may need to rake snow off their roofs in winter, but
this is never an issue on a home with metal roofs. But it is also
possible for snow to avalanche off a metal roof in such quantities that
it can damage decks, shrubs, cars, or even people.

In ski areas notorious for heavy snowfalls, metal roofs are often
equipped with snow guards—metal or plastic clips or even horizontal
bars mounted to sturdy brackets. Homeowners can employ the same
technology to prevent avalanches from the roofs of their homes.

Other disadvantages of metal roofs are not matters of safety, but also
issues of convenience or affordability:

 Metal roofs can be loud during rainstorms or hail. It's a simple

fact that any object falling on a metal roof will be louder than
objects falling on an asphalt shingle or wood shake roof. Modern
installation processes can insulate somewhat against this noise,
though, and over time, owners of metal roofs seldom view this as
a serious disadvantage.
 Metal roofs can fade in time or may be susceptible to staining.
 If not installed correctly, metal roofs can fail at the seams. It's
essential to have a metal roof installed by a qualified,
experienced contractor.
 Metal roofs are considerably more expensive than most other
options. When compared to an asphalt shingle roof, for example,
a metal roof is at least twice as expensive. Remember, though,
that the average metal roof lasts much longer than an asphalt
shingle roof.

Advantages Greatly Outweigh the Drawbacks

Metal roofs continue to grow in popularity, and one of their
"disadvantages" actually turns out to be an advantage when viewed
from the big picture. Although initially much more expensive than an
asphalt shingle roof (for example), a metal roof lasts much, much
longer, and in the final measure is usually the better investment.
(Some insurers even offer homeowners a discount on their premiums
for metal roofs.)

Among the many advantages of a metal roof:

 The life expectancy is 50 to 75 years or even more, as opposed

to the 15 to 25 years of life for an asphalt shingle roof.
 The surface reflects heat, lowering cooling costs in hot climates.
 They are less susceptible to leaking than shingles when installed
correctly.
 They resist wind damage better than other roofing choices.
 Metal roofs are fireproof, making them good choices in areas
where wildfire is a risk.
 Metal roofs are recyclable when they reach the end of their useful

There are many reasons you may be in need of a roofing company. Roofs
tend to last between 15 and 30 years, depending on the material, weather
exposure, and quality of the installation. But sometimes natural disasters
and other events can shorten the lifespan of a roof. Roofing is a skilled labor,
so it is always advisable to hire professionals to fix an old or damaged roof.

Several variables can affect the price of a roof. The major factors include the
roofing material, the size and complexity of the property (pitch of the house,
dorms, vents, and more), whether you need a complete removal and
replacement of your roof or a new layer over the existing roof, and any
necessary permits (talk to your contractor to determine whether they
provide the permit or if you need to obtain it). The average price per square
foot of asphalt shingles is $3.20 to $3.40, which includes both the material
and installation. It is advisable to get three to four different quotes to
compare the cost and time it will take to get the work done.

To get you started, we have picked the best roofing companies that offer
services all over the country.

Re-roofing your home can be one of the most costly renovation
projects you can undertake. Your roofing material is highly visible, it
takes a beating from the elements, and it is partially responsible for
your home's heat loss and gain. So choosing a durable, energy-
efficient material should be high on your priority list.

But the question of sustainability is another matter, and almost no

roofing material qualifies as truly sustainable. If your picture of a
sustainable roof is limited to a green or living roof, you may be
surprised to learn that sustainability is a broad category that can
include many types of roofing materials.

Environmental Performance Factors

What makes a roofing material green, or environmentally friendly, is
not just the raw materials it comes from and how it is manufactured;
it's also how the roof performs over its lifetime and how the roofing is
disposed of at the end of its life.

The key performance factors are overall durability and the material's
resistance to heat gain, which can affect the cost of cooling the home.
The Energy Star program certifies a number of roofing materials for
relatively high heat reflectivity, or their ability to reflect heat away
from the roof, thus lowering cooling costs. Energy Star certification is
not limited to specific roofing materials.

What Makes Roofing Sustainable?

The question of sustainability is more about the raw material than any
other factor. By definition, a sustainable material is produced without
depleting or permanently damaging its resource. Many environmental
experts also would include the requirement that sourcing the material
does not cause significant or irreparable damage to the earth. By these
definitions, any roofing material that uses fossil fuels or mined
materials is not sustainable because both come from an irreplaceable
resource.

Comparing Roofing Material Sustainability

Metal Roofing
Although metal roofs are energy-intensive to produce, they are
attractive and long-lasting, and they often contain high recycled
content or are easily recyclable at the end of their lifetime. Metal roofs
can reflect some heat to reduce heat gain, but they must be insulated
properly because the metal is highly conductive of heat. The most
common metal roofing materials are steel and aluminum. Metals are
made with materials mined from the earth and therefore are not
technically sustainable.

Slate Roofing

Beautiful and incredibly durable (a slate roof can outlast a house),

slate is also very expensive and heavy, and it takes significant
resources to mine it, process it, and transport it. Most slate in the U.S.
comes from the Northeast. Mining stone is not a sustainable practice.
Also, the weight of slate roofing necessitates extra roof framing, which
uses additional resources not required with lighter-weight roofing
materials.

Clay Tile Roofs

Also known as terra cotta, clay tiles are also extremely durable as well

as heavy and expensive. Authentic clay tiles are made with natural
clay that is shaped and fired, similar to ceramic tile. Some tiles receive
special glazes or paints for color or other added properties. The clay
used for tiles is such a plentiful resource that many clay tile
manufacturers claim their products to be sustainable.

Wood Shakes and Shingles

Wood shakes and shingles are arguably the most, and perhaps only,
sustainable roofing materials because wood is a sustainable resource.
Of course, that assumes the roofing comes from sustainably harvested
sources. Shakes and shingles are fairly energy-intensive to produce
and are only moderately durable—much less so than slate and clay
tile.

Disposal of wood roofing is easy because it is a biodegradable

material, provided it has not been treated with synthetic additives or
preservatives. Wood can be an especially sustainable choice if you live
in an area that produces shakes locally,
and/or you have access to shingle made from FSC certified wood.

Asphalt Shingles

Technically called composite shingles, standard asphalt shingles are

moderately durable and can offer good heat reflectivity, depending on
the shingle design and color. They are made with paper, and minerals
as well as fiberglass, tar, and other petroleum products. Some
companies and municipalities make use of discarded asphalt shingles,
but for the most part, old shingles are not widely recycled and are not
biodegradable. As a petroleum-based product, they are not
sustainable.

Concrete Tile and Fiber-Cement Roofing

Both concrete roofing tile and fiber-cement shingles are made with
Portland cement, which is highly energy-intensive to produce. It also
creates a significant amount of CO2 emissions (a greenhouse gas).
However, these roofing materials are extremely durable. Concrete tiles
are heavy and may require additional roof framing. They are also quite
fragile and should not be walked on. Fiber-cement shingles can look
similar to slate but are much lighter in weight.

Green Roof Systems

Also known as living roofs, green roofs are flat or low-slope roofs that
are partially or completely covered by vegetation, either in the form of
grass or other small plants, preferably species native to the local area.
Green roofs also include a growing medium (typically soil and
inorganic materials) and a synthetic waterproof membrane.

Although green roofs can be high-maintenance and expensive to

install, they offer several benefits, including the absorption of
rainwater to prevent runoff and providing insulation for your home. In
urban areas, green roofs help to reduce the heat island effect,
accumulated heat from concrete, asphalt, and other building materials.

On the downside, green roofs rely on a heavy-duty rubber membrane

to waterproof the roof. This is made of petroleum, which is not a
sustainable resource. Green roofs also are very heavy and require
additional roof framing for support.
Tips for Choosing Sustainable Roofing Materials
 Recycled Content. Check to see if the roofing material contains
recycled content. Generally, the higher the percentage the
better, although durability wins out in the end. Also, confirm that
the material can be recycled again at the end of the roof's
lifetime.
 Coatings. Avoid copper and zinc-coated roofing materials, which
can wash into water sources and are dangerous to aquatic life.
 Maintenance. No one wants to spend a lot of time or money
maintaining their roof every year. Be sure your roofing material
is durable and that no toxic products are required to maintain it.
 Weight. In theory, it might seem like the heaviest roof would be
the best, being both highly durable and unlikely to tear away in
high winds. However, you must be sure that your home's existing
structure can support the weight of new roofing material.
 Roof slope. Is your roof nearly flat, low-slope, or high-slope?
Some roofing materials perform much better than others,
depending on the application.
 Color and reflectivity. If you live in a particularly hot climate,
look for roofing materials that are light in color and have high
reflectivity. They will bounce more of the sun rays rather than
heating your home like an oven.
 Warranty. Select roofing materials with the longest warranty
possible, as this is a good indication of quality and durability.

IMPORTANT FACTORS THAT AFFECT INFLUENCE THE

COST OF GUTTER REPLACEMENT
Gutters are known to be one of the most essential and crucial factors in the smooth
working of any household. They are built to provide rainwater protection for your
home or business. But for them to work smoothly, they require regular cleaning,
maintenance, and sometimes replacement as well. Are you the one who is
postponing the replacement of your gutter system for the longest time now? If yes,
then you are the one to know that new gutters can protect your home’s appearance
and functionality to a great extent.
We are here with a great piece of information to guide you in avoiding hassles and
last-minute debacles. You must know that the price of the gutter replacement
depends on several factors, and once you have catered to them beforehand, you
will enjoy the most hassle-free and smooth gutter replacement experience.

The first thing that one must be aware of is that that the location matters, as the
cost of the material varies with respect to the geographical location. Second, you
must be very informative and knowledgeable on the material of the gutter, as they
are made from a variety of materials like aluminum, vinyl, copper, and stainless
steel.

Home

Apart from these two, the other factors the affect the gutter replacement
process are:

 Labor Costs: Labor costs are also dependent on the location, and so your
area will decide the total cost of the project.
 The Size Of The Gutters: Every house or space needs different gutters that
might not be the standard 5-inch ones. In such cases, you might need a
customized one, and that will incur additional costs.
 The Size Of The Home: The size of the home will decide the amount of
material required. Bigger the home, more the material will be required, and
higher the costs will be. Homes with many stories will require more effort
and detailed work from the workers, and thus, the labor costs will also go up.
 Roof Layout: Some roofs are simply designed, while others are complex with
many corners and downspouts. Thus, more complex the structure will be,
more work will be required, and the cost will go up.
 Additional Materials: Many people opt for customization of gutters and
choose extras like gutter covers or gutter heating systems. These things will
also take the final cost of the replacement project up.

Citing these factors, you might have a clear idea of the things to take care of. You
can also hire the services of a trusted and professional gutter installation company
to help you sail through the complete process in a seamless manner. Morin Gutters

GUTTER REPLACEMENT COST

Gutter replacement is one of the many eventualities of owning a home. Guttering will naturally
deteriorate over the years, typically lasting between 15 and 20 years, depending on the location
and the amount of roofing maintenance the gutters receive.

Nevertheless, replacing gutters once the materials have run their course is critical to maintaining
the structural integrity of a house. Neglecting guttering replacement can lead to enormous
drainage failure and damaged house foundation. So, if you’re reading this, you’re probably
wondering: how much is it to re-gutter a house?

Gutter replacement prices can vary from affordable to expensive, as costs will be reliant on the
materials chosen and the amount of work required. This article will break down when you should
replace your gutters, what’s involved in gutter replacement, the factors the influence re-guttering
costs, and the average price to replace gutters.

WHEN SHOULD YOU REPLACE YOUR

GUTTERS?
If you regularly clean out your gutters and generally keep them well maintained, your guttering
system can last up to 20 years without replacement. As is the way with most house maintenance,
the longer you neglect basic maintenance, the more susceptible to damage the materials become.
If your gutters have not been repaired or replaced in the last ten years, it’s essential to take the
time to check your gutters for any damage. Here are some signs that it’s time to replace your
gutter system.

Cracks in the guttering

• Signs of rust or erosion
• Peeling gutter paint
• Fascia board rotting or damaged from moisture
• Mould & mildew growth
• Dirt, leaf, debris build-up
• Water pooling in gutters
• Seams are coming apart, gutters sagging or separating from the roof
• Reoccurring leaks or flood problems

A constant flow of rainwater needs to drain sufficiently. If gutters cannot perform adequate
drainage, the foundation, exteriors, and interiors can suffer water damage. Roof leaks, material
rot, mouldy ceilings, and damaged walls are all common consequences of failing gutters. If you
suspect your home requires new gutters, it’s probably time for a replacement.

WHAT’S INVOLVED IN GUTTER

REPLACEMENT?
Guttering plays a crucial role in the function of your roof and the drainage system required to
keep your house and foundations safe. Replacing guttering goes beyond patching up and
repairing decayed areas of the gutter system. Re-guttering is a process of assessment, safe
removal, fascia replacements, professional measurement and careful installation.

Calling a professional for guttering and gutter replacement is critical to the correct installation.
Gutters need to be correctly measured, cut and fit in accordance with building authority
legislations. It’s for this very reason that all gutter replacement solutions should involve licensed
roofing or roof plumbing specialists who are experienced and trained in guttering installation
standards.

SO, HOW MUCH IS IT FOR NEW

GUTTERS ON A HOUSE?
The costs of gutter replacement or gutter installation will vary from state, and contractor, and
will generally depend on several elements. Factors influencing the costs of gutter replacement
include:

TYPES OF GUTTERING
There are several different guttering materials to choose from when replacing or installing new
gutters. The material you choose should also take into consideration the style and type of roofing
material your house has. The most common types of gutter materials are vinyl, aluminium,
stainless steel, and copper. The materials used will have the most influence on gutter replacement
cost.

LENGTH OF GUTTERING REQUIRED

Another vital factor for re-guttering costs is the length of guttering required. A guttering
replacement will generally be more expensive with bigger houses, with many businesses
charging a per-meter rate. The longer the guttering is, and the longer it takes to install, the more
expensive the gutter installation will be.

ACCESSIBILITY OF AREA

Gutter replacement cost may inflate if the gutter area is difficult or dangerous to access. If
contractors require scaffolding or extra materials to reach the roof, then they may charge more
for guttering installation. This is also applicable for houses with multiple stories – if the
accessing the gutters is more complicated than the average home, gutter installation prices may
increases.

ADDITIONAL GUTTER COMPONENTS

Splash blocks

Splash blocks are small parts made of plastic or concrete that help to channel the water away
from the foundations of a house. Positioned at the end of the downspout, splash bocks direct
water to a designated area. These small parts may increase the price of re-guttering costs.
Flashing

Gutter flashing provides waterproofing that supports water diversion from the roof’s fascia and
into the gutter itself. A thin, rectangular strip, gutter flashing can increase gutter efficiency and
prevent roof water damage. Initial gutter replacement cost may not include additional flashing
installation or replacement.

Gutter Guards

Installing gutter guards can make gutter installation more expensive, as it will involve materials
per linear foot. Gutter guards prevent leaves, dirt, and debris from creating a blockage in the
gutter system. High-quality gutter guards are resistant to rust and erosion, making them an ideal
addition to a gutter replacement project.

Hangers

Hangers provide additional support to guttering systems. Generally used in areas where climate
includes snow or ice, hangers aren’t necessary for Australian homes with adequate fascia
boarding. However, homeowners may decide to additionally install hangers which can further
increase the costs of professional guttering projects.

Prior to gutter replacement or installation, the fascia will also undergo inspection and if
damaged, will require replacing. This can influence the service costs.

THE AVERAGE GUTTER REPLACEMENT

COST
The costs of replacing gutters really depend on the factors above; in particular, the materials used
to replace the gutters. For the purpose of providing an average price bracket, here are some
average prices per linear foot for common guttering materials:

GUTTER DOWNSPOUT REPLACEMENT

COST
Gutters and downspouts are crucial in helping preserve the foundations and walls of a home. The
downspouts carry the water from the guttering away from the house, protecting the foundation
and preventing flooding. When you purchase and install new guttering, you’ll also need to buy
downspouts, which need to sit approximately every 10 meters. In terms of downspout costs, you
can expect to pay different prices depending on the downspout materials. Average downspout
material costs include:

PROFESSIONAL INSTALLATION
One of the most significant influences of gutter replacement cost is professional labour and work
required. The amount of work needed to complete the job will have a considerable impact on re-
guttering costs. The best way to get an accurate idea of guttering costs is to collect quotes from
prospective roofing companies. A reliable roofing company will come and assess the site before
providing any concrete quotes. Don’t risk an inexperienced handyman – working with a
reputable company in the first place means saving money on dodgy work repairs down the line.

Guttering plays an essential role in defence of your roofing system and house structure. Without
gutters, your house would suffer extreme moisture damage every winter. Replacing your gutters
may seem expensive when you take the materials, additional parts, and labour costs into
consideration. At the end of the day, guttering replacement costs are very reasonable when you
consider their role in keeping your home safe.

REPLACING GUTTERS IS A BIG

DECISION.
Home gutters were built to last and are likely to last for many years depending
on the material used to make them. However, with time your gutters will start
to deteriorate and eventually you will end up fixing or replacing gutters.

Given the benefits you get from your gutters, such as preventing rainwater
from damaging your foundation, it is important to ensure that your gutters are
in the best shape. Your home’s value depends on the ability to understand
how and when you should replace or fix your gutters. Here are a few factors
the professionals at Clarke & Rush use to determine when to replace your
gutters.

TYPE OF GUTTER MATERIAL

Depending on the material used, your gutters can last anywhere between a
few years to more than 20 years. For example, galvanized steel and copper
made gutters tend to last longer than other varieties.

The type of material used will determine how soon defects such as rust,
leakages, and detachments from the roof start to happen. It should also tell
you how soon you are expected to replace them.

GUTTER MAINTENANCE
How often you maintain your gutters will determine how often you will replace
them. Proper maintenance will keep your gutters going for longer.
Maintenance includes cleaning and fixing any detached areas.

Carrying out regular inspection and following through with proper maintenance
will increase the lifespan of your gutters. Your roofing expert will help you with
all your home Sacramento gutter installation and maintenance issues.

WEATHER CONDITIONS
People living in stormy areas tend to replace their gutters more often than
those living in more temperate climates. The wind might detach the gutter
from the fascia. Such repeated incidences will lead to gutter wear. Increased
gutter wear means that you will have to replace them more often.
WEAR AND TEAR
If your gutters are visibly sagging or detached from the roof then it might be
time to call a  roofing expert for gutter replacement. You also need to replace
your gutters if you notice numerous cracks, holes or rust spots and if your
gutter is pulling away from your roof.

The best time to carry out an inspection is during the rainy season. Carefully
walk around your house and inspect your gutters. You are more likely to
notice effects then.

DAMAGE TO YOUR HOUSE

Your gutters are supposed to keep water away from your house. Your gutters
will need replacing if you start noticing things like water in your basement,
eroded landscaping around your house, and peeling paint from your walls.
This will mean that your gutters are not effective. It is also important to ensure
that your downspouts are properly attached to the gutters. Make sure they
extend at least 10 feet from your foundation.

LEVEL OF DAMAGE
The level of damage on your gutters will determine whether you need to
replace them or simply repair them. Minor problems such as missing
downspouts and lose gutters are easily fixable. Problems such as holes will
require a replacement. Make sure to involve a qualified roofing expert to help
replace your gutters.

Proper maintenance of your home makes economic sense and helps retain
the value of your home. Now that you know how often you should be replacing
your gutters, you can decide whether it’s time. Contact Clarke & Rush for
professional roofing and gutter maintenance to keep your home in its best
condition.

How to Prepare for Gutter Installation Services in Your Home
Collecting rainwater is a necessity in various parts of the country, especially due to the ever-increasing water
shortage. Rainwater supplements the little water that you get from the municipality at a cost. Additionally,
harvesting rainwater is essential in protecting your residential property from water damage during storms.

But before you hire gutter installation services, you have to prepare by incorporating the following strategies.

1. Research Different Gutters

One of the primary steps you need to take is to analyze the different types of gutters in the industry so that you
can know what works for your house. Primarily, half-round and K-style are the two types of gutter shapes you
have to choose from. Given that you don’t have sufficient information on the merits and demerits of each
gutter, you need to get advice from technicians on which type to use.

2. Repaint Your Home

You might be tempted to hire gutter installation services before repainting your house. This is a problem that
has caught up with a large number of homeowners. Gutter installation is a complex process which might cause
old paint to chip out. Before you hire a gutter replacement company, repaint your house so that it can have a
new and fresh look. Besides, new and fresh paint will not be chipped out during gutter installation services.

3. Check for Water Damage

Checking for water damage around the house is perhaps the most important preparatory step in new gutter
installation process. Checking for things like rotting soffits should be high up on your list of priorities.
Extensive water damage such as mold growth should be repaired before hiring gutter installation services. If
you hire local gutter installers before repairing water damaged areas, you will be forced to call a gutter repair
company immediately.

4. Think about Drainage

You might not be willing to harvest rainwater, and the only use of gutters for you is directing rainwater away
from your house. In such circumstances, you need to think about drainage before you call gutter installers near
me. You can direct rainwater on the driveway or your garden. If you are not sure about your decision, you can
consult a water engineer from the local authorities so that you can avoid being on the wrong side of the law.

5. Remove Old Gutters

Sometimes you might be having old gutters that are beyond repair. Replacing them with new gutters is the only
way you will be able to deal with storm water. In most cases, removing old gutters can be dangerous,
especially if you are not an experienced technician; hiring a professional gutter cleaning company will
minimize chances of accidents and damages to the house.

6. Understand Building Codes

As a homeowner, you might know many things about gutter installation services but fail to understand local
building laws. Thousands of homeowners find themselves on the wrong side of the law and are forced to
replace gutters after failing to adhere to local building codes. So, when you are preparing to install new gutters,
you must check the local building codes.

7. Hire Gutter Experts

It is one thing to replace old gutters, repaint the house, and understand the local building codes. However,
installing gutters professionally is only done by people who have gutter installation and building knowledge.
Therefore, you need to make sure that you hire gutter experts to handle your gutter installation services.
Dealing with experienced gutter installation experts is very necessary because it eliminates any mistakes that
might happen during the installation process.

Are you interested in harvesting rainwater for domestic use or directing it away from your residential property?
Working with experienced gutter installation experts makes everything easier than what you could have
anticipated.

How Long Does It Take To Replace Gutters?

As a homeowner or property manager, you know the centrality of properly functioning residential systems.
Your water drainage system hinges on the success and stability of your gutters. If you have problems with
your gutters, you must replace them before they allow further damage to your home’s structure. But exactly
how long does it take to replace gutters?

The Amount Needing Replacement

Replacement time directly correlates with your roof perimeter size and dimension. The amount of gutter you
need to replace dictates how long it will take a professional to remove your old gutters and install new ones.
The more material you need, the longer it will take to haul and install. Furthermore, the number of corners
and angles will increase your overall time. Straightaways are easier to put together, but corners require
unique pieces and extra attention to detail.

The Weather and Other External Factors

Unfortunately, the weather is not kind to outdoor repair projects. Continuous pouring rain will slow down
gutter replacement operations, especially because gutters collect and funnel rainwater every time
precipitation falls.
Another scenario you should anticipate is the likelihood that other problems exist in your fascia and roofing
that only gutter removal and replacement will unveil. You could have rotted fascia boards or cracked roofing
tiles that allow moisture to seep into your attic and walls. These revelations could add significant time to your
gutter repair since these problems likely need solving before you can nail in new gutters.

The Experience Level and Quality of the Installer

Installing your gutters on your own will take significantly longer than a trained professional who repairs and
installs these systems for a living. Should you prefer project expediency, a contractor is the best way to go.
However, not all gutter installers are the same, and some have far less experience than others. Explore our
gutter installation and replacement services at Gutter Maid and see our lengthy track record of swift, high-
quality gutter repairs by our expert team.

So, with all these factors in mind, how long does it take to replace gutters? You can expect that gutter
installation process to last between one and five hours. If you have a complex and lengthy gutter system, it
could take more time, but typically no longer than one day. The best gutter repair services know how to
balance speed with quality, so it’s okay if an installation spans two days. Reach out to our team at Gutter

Splash over can occur in areas where upper level downspouts drain into lower level roofs. This
issue can be reduced or eliminated by either extending the upper level downspout directly into
the lower gutter, Or by installing a splash guard. Here, our service technician installed a splash
guard on the lower level gutter, directly under the upper level downspout. This splash guard will
greatly reduce, or even eliminate the splash over that was occurring in this area.

Do Gutters Have to be Removed When

Replacing a Roof?
Roof replacement  is an essential part of a home improvement project. If your existing
roof has passed its lifespan of usefulness or the roof has severe damages throughout,
you’ll need to get a new roof. Installing a new roof doesn’t just offer security to the
inmates of the house, but it also enhances the value of the house. But one key concern
that arises during a roof replacement is whether you should leave the gutters as they are
or have them removed.

When getting a new roof, you should definitely consider the effect of the new installation
on your gutters. Just like the roof, the gutters also need to remain in good shape for the
smooth operation of your home. You can’t just replace the roof and leave the gutters in a
poor quality condition. Not paying attention to the condition of gutters during the new
roof installation can lead to different types of issues afterwards. But does it make sense to
have the gutters removed, if they are in good condition? To decide whether you should
have the roofer replace the gutters, there are some important factors that should be taken
into consideration.

Let us understand the impact of new roof installation and whether or not you should get
the gutters removed as well.

How Roof Replacement Affects Gutters

It is possible to leave the gutters installed during a roof replacement. But it is important
to understand the impact of this decision. In fact, you should understand what happens to
the gutters during a roof installation.

Whether or not and how your gutters will be affected depends on how the gutters are
installed. In some cases, gutters remain attached to the fascia board beneath the roof. If
this is how your gutters are installed, a new roof installation will not affect the gutters
and so the roofer will not need to remove the gutters. In other cases, installing a new roof
can cause damage to the gutters. Such damages occur when the roofer or the roofing
contractor removes the old shingles , moves the roofing materials on the roof and installs
the new shingles.

If the gutters sustain damage during the roof replacement, this can create few problems in
future. Such damages can harm other parts of the roof and the repairs can prove to be
very expensive later. In fact, the cost of repairs might prove even more expensive than
removal of gutters in the first place.

Removal and Reinstallation of Gutters

Having the gutters removed becomes essential during roof replacement if the gutters are
attached to the roof. If the gutter comes in the way of the new roof installation, it will
most likely sustain damages, particularly along the edges. The roof can never be 100%
sure that the sealing is fully intact as it was before the installation. That is why it is a
good idea to have the gutters removed first, have the new roof installed and then reinstall
the gutter system.

There are multiple benefits of taking this route, which is getting the gutters removed
before the new roof installation.

 Have a better look at the components of the gutter system

 Ensure proper seals along the edges of the gutters
 Eliminate the risk of dents or scratches to the gutters
 Get the best possible new roof installation
First of all, getting the gutters removed paves the path to an ideal installation of the new
roof. This is actually the natural process that roofers should follow – remove the gutters
and then install the new roof.

Roof replacement is a tedious, time-consuming project. The process involves multiple

steps including the installation of the roofing accessories. Once the gutters have been
removed, the roofing technician will be able to properly install each accessory that goes
into the roof replacement. If the gutters are not removed, the roofer will install the ice
and water shield over the gutter. This can create leakage issues later and the new roof can
sustain water damage.

Replacing the Gutters without Replacing the Roof

Now picture this situation: It isn’t still time to replace the roof but the gutters are in need
of replacement. What should you do?

So, this is a case which is the exact opposite of what we discussed above. If the roof
hasn’t expired yet, you can go ahead and get the gutters fixed as soon as you can. The
roof won’t come in the way of gutters replacement. However, if the roof has almost
completed its lifespan of usefulness and the gutters need replacement as well, you should
wait and plan for both the replacements together. In this way, you can get the entire roof
replacement project performed in a proper manner. Above all, getting the roof and the
gutters replaced in one go also makes financial sense. So, you should weigh in all the
factors and make a wise decision.

At the same time, you should understand the difference between the functions of the roof
and the gutters. Also, the cost of a new roof is a lot more than the cost of replacing the
gutters. You shouldn’t postpone the replacement of the gutters simply because it’s not yet
time for getting a new roof.

Although it is ideal to get the roof and the gutters replaced at once, this may not always
be possible. The decision depends on the specific issues that you face and the existing
condition of the roof. If you are confused as to what you should do, feel free to seek the
expert help of a roofing contractor. A professional will examine the scenario properly and
offer you the most practical options.
