In this lesson you will learn the concepts of melody, its

different patterns, major and minor scales where two those
scales were tackled in the previous lesson. Moreover, you will
learn more about how they are written on the staff and how you
will be able to read and sing them.

LEARN

Do you know what you are actually humming or singing is

another element in music called melody. Melody is the
succession of tones and the combination of pitch and rhythm in
a composition.
To be able to read and write music on the staff, you need
to recognize the different musical symbols and musical terms.
The method of reading and writing down music so it can be
performed vocally and instrumentally is called notation.
Notation helps the person to interpret a musical piece.
To be able to know how high or low a sound is, you must
first know some basic tools in music.

THE MUSICAL STAFF

It is the first tool in music. Musical staff consists of
five parallel lines and four spaces. It is enclosed by a bar
lines at each side.

The musical staff has a musical clef. A musical clef is a

symbol placed at the left most part of the staff. Its purpose
is to indicate the exact location of a particular note or
pitch on the staff.

Two Common Clef in a Musical Staff

Treble Clef
- commonly known as the G clef places G above middle C on
the second line of the staff.

Bass Clef
-the F clef, on the other hand, places F below middl C on
the fourth line of the staff.

PITCH NAMES AND SO-FA SYLLABLES

Each line and space on the staff has a particular tone

name or so-fa syllable and a corresponding pitch name or
letter names which are derived from the first seven letters of
the alphabet.
Pitch Name So-Fa Syllable Pitch Name So-Fa Syllable
C G
D A
E B
F

LEDGER LINES
Aside from notes on the lines and spaces of the staff,
there are also notes that can be found below and above the
musical staff. When this happens, a short horizontal line is
drawn on, above, or below the head of the note which is called
ledger line. Ledger Lines are used to notate pitches that are
below or above the lines and spaces of the regular staff.

ACCIDENTALS
There are musical symbols that when placed before the
notes alter or change the pitch of the notes called
accidentals.

Two common Accidentals

Sharp- raises a note by a half step
Flat- lowers the note by a half step
