1. Why is communication important to you?
ANSWER: Good communication skills build strong friendships. It also helps in making us confident
enough. Thus, students get interested in going to school every day. It's really important to remain
friendly with others in this competitive world. Better verbal Communication and physical expressions
help them to make new friends.

2. Why is communication important to society?


ANSWER: Because it helps you enhance as a person. Sharing your thoughts with others is a good process
and allows us to gain knowledge and share knowledge. There is no doubt that communication plays a
vital role in human life and human society. It not only helps to facilitate the process of sharing
information and knowledge with others, but also helps people to develop relationships with others.
Therefore, the importance of communication cannot be underestimated.

3. Why do you think communication skills are considered essential in being good
citizens?
ANSWER: Communication skills are considered to be essential and can make you a good citizen because
communication is the key to success and understanding of all people in any aspect whether business,
technology, politics or career. A wise person who communicates effectively can get what he wants.

1. What problems can happen when there are communication breakdowns?
Answer: When there is a communication breakdown, the conversation will be mis interpret and
misunderstood with others, it can affect the psychological thinking of a person such as trust and
feelings, also it may leads to conflicts.

Lesson 2: Communication Ethics


BEFORE READING
1. What is ethics?
ANSWER: how a person uses language, media, journalism, and creates relationships that are guided by
an individual's moral and values. These ethics consider being aware of the consequences of behavior
and consequences; it's to “respect other points of view and tolerate disagreement”.

2. Why do you think there should be ethics in communication?


ANSWER: There should be ethics in communication for him OR her to convey the right message to
another. When emotions and culture are taken into consideration, the dignity and value of the receiver
will be uplifted. Sometimes, due to unethical communication the message to be delivered could be
misinterpreted.

3. What problems can arise when people are not ethical in their communication
practices?
Answer: When regular people do not use good manners when communicating, anything from an
argument to a physical fight can happen. When political leaders from different countries do the same
thing, the effects may be would be worse, from severing diplomatic ties, sanctions, trade wars even
military conflicts.

1. Why is it important to be ethical in communicating today?


Answer: Because, ethical communication influenced our experience, culture and society in which we
learn and grow. It is important to communicate ethically today because most people are losing sight of
what is right and what hurts other people.

Answer: Yes, it is still a virtue. For when you're honest you have a good image and people aroundyou

Answer: Hate speech, speech or expression that denigrates a person or persons on the basis of (alleged)
membership in a social group identified by attributes such as race, ethnicity, gender, sexual orientation,

4. When you think of politicians today, would you say that they have been
communicating in an ethical manner?
Answer: No because politicians are the art of lying to keep people from finding out bad stuff and keep
the nation going, regardless of the consequences. They can’t hold their tongues to speak in a
respectable tone.

5. Who comes to mind on the subject of violating the ethics of communication?


Answer: The politicians and our president for example when president Rodrigo made his speech in front
on the camera and the people, he always says foul words also, we all know politicians. We all know
politicians are liars and thieves and yet we listen and some even worship them.

6. Why do people communicate in an unethical manner?


Answer: Communication used to undermine relationships or encourage social immorality is unethical
communication. Unethical behavior has serious consequences for both individuals and organizations.

7. What consequences can you think of because of this?


Answer: You can lose your job and reputation, organizations can lose their credibility, general morale
and productivity can decline, or the behavior can result in significant fines and/or financial loss

Lesson 3: Communication and Globalization


BEFORE READING
1. Review what you know about The Story of English. How did it come to be a
global lingua franca or an international language?
Answer: Why English has become the world's lingua franca is due to the fact that is the common
language or mode of communication that enables people to understand one another regardless of their
cultural and ethnical backgrounds. It makes communication a lot easier and understanding one another
has become efficient.

2. Watch “The History of English in Ten Minutes” (found in the desktop of this
laptop as well). After watching it, come up with your own list of the factors that
led English to take on its global status.
Answer: The Industrial Revolution began in England, based at least partly on the fact that England has a
lot of coal. They developed a financial system and had a stable legal system, so businesses could grow,
like other European countries, England had overseas colonies. As a result of the Industrial Revolution,
they greatly expanded their empire to all corners of the earth. England was on the winning side of WWI
and WW2. Its power was reduced, but its daughter, the US, came out of WW2 unscathed, powerful, and
set up military bases all around the world, Language follows military and economic power. English-
speaking countries have both. You will notice that the beauties of English as a language do not figure in
this story. Yes, we have great dramatists and novelists. But that’s a bonus, not a cause.

3. Do some quick internet research to find out how English came to have an
official status in the Philippines.
Answer: English in the Philippines occurred in the year 1762 when the Americans occupied the
Philippines from 1898 to 1946. Thus, this is why English is an Official language in the country. The
Philippines is made up of around 70 Million people. While in 1901, around 504 US teachers came to the
country.

4. How do you feel about the role and status of English in the Philippines .
Answer: The status (being an official one) of English language has been a quite adequate within the
current geopolitical realities of the Philippines even though it has an unfair official status over Spanish
from cultural and historical viewpoints. Most government documents and commercial signage are
written in English due to some reasons that Philippine languages couldn’t able to render many technical
words from English to local languages due to latter’s centuries of contact with foreign languages like
Spanish before American occupation in the country.

AFTER READING
1. Based on McCrum’s essay and some additional research on your part, why is
the rise of English such a remarkable “success story”? What led to English taking
on the role of a global language?
Answer: So, English has got the status global language. A global language mainly arises due to the
political as well as the economic power of its native speakers. It was the British imperial and industrial
power that caused the spread of English around the globe from 17 th to 20 th century.

2. Can you add to the evidence given by McCrum in paragraphs 3 to 7 that English
is the most widespread language in the world?
Answer: 1. Understand the implications of globalization on communication, explain the notion of World
English in the context of English being a global language and, use Standard English and bias-free
language in writing.

3. David Crystal (2003) says that “a language achieves a genuinely global status
when it develops a special role that is recognized in every country.” What is the
special role of English in the Philippines?
Answer: The special role of English in the Philippines is to enable Filipinos to work abroad in increasing
numbers. It also facilitates the learning of science, technology, literature, etc., - written in English -
forming, thereby, a middle class of professionals linked globally to the Internet. It enables Filipinos to
work abroad in increasing numbers and speaking in this language fluently is one of our advancements,
we can interact with the other countries and explore their culture and traditions.
4. Why does McCrum say that “we should not talk of English but of many
Englishes”?
Answer: Because the English language usage spans across multiple nations. Thus, when you plan on
migrating to a country, you ought to learn what specific kind of English language they speak.
