Permutation
The number of permutations of n objects taken r
at a time is determined by the following formula,
n!
P(n, r) = ( n−r ) !

In permutation, order matters. There are two


types of permutation: repetition is allowed and no
repetition.
Can you memorize this one? Well, it is easy.

In Combination, order does not


matter. It can be either repetition is
allowed or not.

Let’s us try this one!


A code have 4 digits in a specific order, the digits
are between 0-9. How many different permutations
are there if one digit may only be used once?

A four digit code could be anything between


0000 to 9999, hence there are 10,000 combinations
if every digit could be used more than one time but
since we are told in the question that one digit only
may be used once it limits our number of
combinations. In order to determine the correct
number of permutations we simply plug in our values
into our formula:
n! 10 ! 10∙ 9 ∙ 8 ∙7 ∙ 6 ∙5 ∙ 4 ∙ 3 ∙2 ∙ 1
P(n, r) = ( n−r ) ! = ( 10−4 ) ! = 6 ∙5 ∙ 4 ∙ 3 ∙2 ∙ 1
= 5040

We need to form a 5 team in a class of 12


students. How many different teams can be formed? 
Solution: 
There is nothing that indicates that the order in
which the team members are selected is important
and therefore it is a combination problem. Hence the
number of teams is given by 

12  C 5 = 12! / [ (12 - 5)!5! ] = 792

2. A student need 8 more classes to complete


her degree. If she met the prerequisites for all
the courses, how many ways can she take 4
classes next semester?

3. There are 4 men and 5 women in a small


office. The customer wants a site visit from a
group of 2 man and 2 women. How many
different groups can be formed from the
office?
