Introductory Message

This Self-Learning Module (SLM) is prepared so that you, our dear learners,
can  continue  your  studies  and  learn  while  at  home.  Activities,  questions,
directions,  exercises,  and  discussions  are  carefully  stated  for  you  to
understand each lesson.
Each  SLM  is  composed  of  different  parts.  Each  part  shall  guide  you
step-by-step as you discover and understand the lesson prepared for you.
Pre-tests  are  provided  to  measure  your  prior  knowledge on lessons in each
SLM. This will tell you if you need to proceed on completing this module or if
you  need  to  ask  your  facilitator  or  your  teacher’s  assistance  for  better
understanding of the lesson. At the end of each module, you need to answer
the post-test to self-check your learning. Answer keys are provided for each
activity and test. We trust that you will be honest in using these.
In  addition  to  the  material  in  the  main  text,  Notes  to  the  Teacher  are  also
provided to our facilitators and parents for strategies and reminders on how
they can best help you on your home-based learning.
Please  use  this  module  with  care.  Do  not  put  unnecessary  marks  on  any
part  of  this  SLM.  Use  a  separate  sheet  of  paper in answering the exercises
and tests. And read the instructions carefully before performing each task.
If  you  have  any  questions  in  using  this  SLM  or  any  difficulty in answering
the  tasks  in  this  module,  do  not  hesitate  to  consult  your  teacher  or
facilitator.
Thank you.

Let Us Learn!

have  an  in-depth  understanding  of  why  volcanic  eruption  is  highly
dependent on the viscosity of magma.

Volcanoes are______ but they are very different from other mountains;
they  are  not  formed  by  ________  and  crumpling  or  by  uplift  and  erosion.
Instead,  volcanoes  are  built  by  the  accumulation  of  their  own  eruptive
products- _______, ________ (crusted over ash flows, and tephra (airborne ash
and  dust).  A  volcano  is  most  commonly  a  conical  hill  or  mountain  built
around  a  _______that  connects  with  reservoirs  of  __________  below  the
surface  of  the  _________.  The  term  _________  also  refers  to  the  opening  or
vent through which the molten rock and associated gases are expelled.

Driven by buoyancy and _____ pressure the molten rock, which is lighter
than the surrounding ___________ forces its way upward and may ultimately
break through zones of weaknesses in the Earth’s _______. If so, an eruption
begins  and  the  molten  rock  may  pour  from  the  vent  as  non-explosive  lava
flows, or if may shoot violently into the air as dense_______ of lava ________.
Larger  fragments  fall  back  around  the  vent  and  accumulations of fall back
fragments  may  move  downslope  as  ash  flows  under  the  force  of  ________.
Some  of  the  finer  ejected  materials  may  be  carried  by  the  ________  only  to
fall  to  the  __________  many  miles  away.  The  finest  ash  particles  may  be
injected miles into the atmosphere and carried many times around the world
by _________________ before settling out.

Let’s Discuss!
Geology is the study of Earth, its matter, and the processes that form
and change it.
Volcanic activities are windows to Earth’s interior-they provide us with
important  information  with  the  materials  and  processes  undergoing
inside the planet.
11

Volcanoes  are  not  randomly  distributed  over  the  surface  of  Earth.
Majority of them can be found above sea level surrounding the Pacific
Ocean  and  form  the  region  called  “Pacific  Ring  of  Fire”.  They  are
formed through accumulation of eruptive products.
Volcanic  eruptions  are  difficult  to  predict  and  most  cannot  be  really
predicted.  Geologists  and  volcanologists  employ  various  instruments
in order to forecast volcanic activities so as to minimize the impacts of
the natural phenomena to men and other living organisms.
Magma is an extremely hot liquid or semi hot liquid located under the
Earth’s surface.
Lava  is  a  molten  rock  that  has  been  expelled  from  the  interior  of  a
terrestrial planet.
