Introduction To Psychology of Learning - Lecture Notes

1. Psychology of learning examines how people acquire knowledge and skills. It helps teachers understand how to maximize learning by considering factors like motivation, interest, and individual differences in learners. 2. Key aspects of psychology of learning include studying the learner, the learning process, the learning situation, the teaching situation, and evaluating learning performance. Principles of learning show that active participation, repetition, learner control, and motivation strengthen learning.

PSYCHOLOGY OF LEARNING

Learning Outcomes:

❖ Describe multiple dimensions of learner ‘s

development and its implications on learning

❖ Conceptualize the needs of the learners and

the process of learning to created effective
management learning.
WHAT IS PSYCHOLOGY
OF LEARNING?

This area is concerned with such problems as:

How do children acquire skills?

When is learning more effective?
What are the factors that help the learning Process?
How do we measure the amount of learning?
Why do we forget?
Can memory be improved?

❖ Psychology of Learning helps the teacher to

get answers to these questions.

❖ It tells us that learning becomes more

effective if factors like motivation and interest
are taken into consideration by every teacher.

HOW DO GROUPS
1. THE LEARNER
SCOPE:
PSYCHOLOGY OF
LEARNING ❖ The innate abilities and capabilities of
the individual differences and their
measurements, the overt, convert,
conscious as well as unconscious
behavior of the learner, the
characteristics of his growth and
development at each stage beginning
from childhood to adulthood.

2. THE LEARNING PROCESS

❖ Deals with the nature of learning and

how it takes place and contains the
topics such as laws, principles and
theories of learning; remembering
and forgetting, perceiving, concept
formation, thinking, reasoning
process, problem solving, transfer of
training, ways and means of effective
learning etc.
3. LEARNING SITUATION

SCOPE:
PSYCHOLOGY OF ❖ Deals with the environment factors and
LEARNING learning situation which come midway
between the learner and the teacher.
Topics like classroom climate and group
dynamics techniques and aids which
facilitate learning, evaluation
techniques, and practices, guidance and
counseling etc. Which help in the smooth
functioning of the teaching learning
process.

4. TEACHING SITUATION

❖ It suggests the techniques of teaching. It also helps in

deciding what learning situation should be provided by
teacher to learner according to his mental and physical
age, his previous knowledge and interest level. By
describing the learner’s characteristics, what teaching
aids are appropriate for the particular subject.
5. EVALUATION OF LEARNING
PERFORMANCE
SCOPE:
PSYCHOLOGY OF ❖ Suggests various tool and techniques for
LEARNING assessment and evaluation such as performance
test, oral test and written test.

❖ The test results are analyzed such as causes for

poor performance, problems in any aspect of
development is corrected by maladjustment are
helped by guidance and counselling study habit,
examination techniques and learning styles are
analyzed and helped the learner so that he can
overcome the difficulties.

5. THE TEACHER

❖ Emphasizes the need of knowing the self for a teacher to

play his/her role properly in the process of teaching.

❖ Factors such as essential personality traits, interests,

aptitudes, the characteristics of effective teaching etc., in
order to inspire and establish an effective learning.
1. FOCUSING INTENSIFIES LEARNING

PRINCIPLES OF
LEARNING ❖ Individuals vary in ways that help them
learn. Some learners depend on eye
contact with the teacher, they focus on
the teacher’s verbalizations and body
language. Others make images in their
mind of what is being presented. Some
learners write images on paper or write
notes to stay actively involved.

❖ While studying, some learners listen to music to help them

concentrate, some learners have rituals to help them focus
like meditation, organizing materials and preparing snacks.
Most learners enhance their ability to retain and recall
information by developing a pattern that provides physical
comfort, a heightened level of arousal and a clear mind.
2. REPETITION ENHANCES LEARNING

PRINCIPLES OF ❖ Repeating information and applying it

LEARNING in different situations and context
helps to remember it. Sustained
practices enforce learning. This is true
for memorizing facts and mastering
psychomotor skills.

3. LEARNER CONTROLS LEARNING

❖ Learners do better when they feel in

control of the learning process. And they
are more likely to choose learning
methods that worked for them in the past.
Older learners generally need more time
to absorb new information. They are
successful when they are in control of both
the pace and increments of learning

WHY STUDY
4. ACTIVE PARTICIPATION IS
NECESSARY FOR LEARNING

PRINCIPLES OF
LEARNING ❖ Learning is an active process, most
people find that the more they are able
to involve themselves in learning, the
more they are able to learn.
Participation in learning means having
input into the learning process, including
time, place, pace and increments in
learning.

5. LEARNING STYLES VARY

❖ Some learners find it easier to comprehend

verbal discourse, while others comprehend
visual cues more easily. Many find that a
combination of verbal, visual, auditory and
kinesthetic experience is most effective.
Assess your learning styles so you can plan an
approach to enhance learning.
6. ORGANIZATION PROMOTES
LEARNING

PRINCIPLES OF
LEARNING ❖ Learners often highlight readings,
summarize paragraphs, explain their
assignment to others and ask questions.
These are ways of actively organizing
learning materials.

❖ This personal intellectual activity makes

the information meaningful and easier
to retain. Methods of organization vary,
but to be most effective, materials
should be organized in a way that gits
both content and learner.
7. ASSOCIATION IS NECESSARY TO
LEARNING

PRINCIPLES OF
❖ To retain any new information or skill,
LEARNING
learners must be able to associate the
new learning with phenomena that are
already within their repertoire of
experiences. Association provides
relevance to learners.

8. IMITATION IS A METHOD OF
LEARNING

❖ Imitation is particularly useful for mastering

psychomotor skills, but attitudes and beliefs
can also be incorporated if learners observe a
respected role model.
9. MOTIVATION STRENGTHENS
PRINCIPLES OF LEARNING
LEARNING

❖ It is easier for learners to grasp facts,

learn new skills, and change attitudes
when they anticipate gaining benefits
from the effort. Past success and
expectations of future success are
powerful motivating factors.

10. PRIMACY AFFECTS RETENTION

❖ People tend to learn the first few items

best; this concept is referred to as primacy.
❖ Learners pay more attention to and devote
more energy to items presented first. The
human mind is capable of retaining a
limited number (5-7) of new bits of
information at one time.
