This module is designed and written to help you understand the lessons in your own. This is
prepared in simple approach to help you learn in school or at home.
This module is about how to rewrite linear equations. You will learn the two forms of the linear
equations namely slope-intercept and standard form. The steps in rewriting linear equations are also
discussed.
It is expected that after studying this module, you are equipped on what a linear equation is and
its application to real life.

Objectives:
At the end of this lesson you will be able to:
 Write the linear equation Ax+ By=C in the form y=mx+b and vice versa.
 Rewrite linear equation from the standard form to slope intercept form.
 graphs a linear equation given (a) any two points; (b) the x – and y – intercepts;

In going through this module, you need to have patient to understand well what you have read.

Linear equations play an important role in our lives. A lot of things around us form a straight-line
pattern. Imagine the dotted figure below as the stairway steps in going up the lighthouse. What would
happen to you if these steps were not equally distanced?

These steps represent points on the Cartesian coordinate plane whose coordinates are
(−3 ,−2) ,(−2 ,−1),(−1,0) ,(0,1),(1,2) and (2,3) . We can say that the second coordinate ( y ) is one
unit more than the first coordinate ( x ) and can be represented by the equation y=x +1.

When these points are connected, you will form a straight line. We can now say that the graph
of a linear equation in two variables is a straight line.

Aside from the sets of ordered pairs and the graph, a linear function f defined by f (x)=mx+b
can also be represented by its equation.
Does the equation 3 x+ 2 y =6 describe a linear function? If yes, determine the slope and y-intercept.

The equation 3 x+ 2 y =6 can be solved for y :

An equation of the form Ax+ By=C can be written in the form y=mx+b is a linear equation in two
variables.
The linear equation x – y=−1 is in the form Ax+ By=C . You can write this in the form y=mx+b
as y=x +1.
Standard Form: Ax+ By=C , where A , B ,∧C ∈ R , A∧B are not both 0; and
Slope-Intercept Form: y=mx+b , where m is the slope and b is the
y-intercept, m and b ∈ R .

How do we rewrite the equation 3 x – 5 y=10 in the form y=mx+b ?

Solution:

3 x – 5 y=10 Given

3 x+(−3 x) – 5 y =10+(−3 x ) Addition Property of Equality

Summary
An equation of the form Ax+ By=C and can be written in the form y=mx+b is a linear equation
in two variables.

 Slope-Intercept Form : The linear equation y=mx+b is in the slope- intercept form,
where m is the slope and b is the y-intercept.
 Standard Form: The linear equation in the form Ax+ By=C , where A , B , and C
are real numbers, and A∧B are not both zero.

Graphing Linear Equations in Two Variables


In the previous module, you have learned that there are many ways in representing functions.
One of which is through an equation. A linear equation in two variables can be written in its standard
form Ax + By = C or slope-intercept form y = mx + b. It can also be graphed using the following
methods:

a. using any two points;

b. using the x and y intercepts;

Graph the linear equation in two variables y = x + 2 using two points.

Step Solution

1 Let x = 1 and x = - 2.

y=x+2 y=x+2

y=1+2 y=-2+2

y=3 y= 0

Activity 2 Sketch Me (Part 1)


Given two values for x, graph the linear equations in two variables in a graphing paper. The first
item serves as an example, answer numbers 2 – 4.

The x – intercept is the abscissa of the coordinates of the point (a, 0) where the graph
intersects the x – axis while the y – intercept is the ordinate of the coordinates of the point (0, b) where
the graph intersects the y – axis. The next method of graphing makes use of the intercepts.

Using x – intercept and y – intercept

Steps in graphing linear equations in two variables using x – intercept and

y - intercept.

1. Solve for y – intercept by letting x = 0 to have a point (0, b).

2. Solve for x – intercept by letting y = 0 to have a point (a, 0).


Illustrative Example

Graph the linear equation in two variables 2 x – y=4 using x - intercept and
y - intercept.

Step Solution

1 Let x = 0,
2x – y = 4
2(0) – y = 4
–y=4
y = - 4. Hence, (0, - 4).

2 Let y = 0,
2x – y = 4
2x – 0 = 4
2x = 4
x=2 Hence, (2, 0).

Graph the linear equations in two variables using the x – intercept and y – intercept. The first
item serves as an example, answer numbers 2 – 4.
