Quantity Surveying Activity Manual

ACTIVITY NO. 5: Detailed Quantity Survey of Non-Structural Parts of the Project (Electrical
System and Sanitary / Plumbing System)

1.1. Program Outcomes (POs) Addressed by the Activity

a) Ability to apply knowledge of mathematics and science to solve complex engineering problems
b) Ability to function on multidisciplinary teams
c) ability to use techniques, skills, and modern engineering tools necessary for engineering practice
d) Knowledge and understanding of engineering and management principles as a member and
leader in a team, to manage projects and in multidisciplinary environments

1.2. Activity Intended Learning Outcomes (AILOs)

At the end of the activity, the students shall be able to:
a) Understand material takeoff for electrical system and sanitary / plumbing system
b) Apply industry’s adapted practices on material quantification and providing allowances
c) Compute detailed quantity survey of non-structural parts of the project specifically electrical
system, and sanitary / plumbing system

1.3. Aims of the Activity

The aim of this activity is to develop the skill of students when it comes to quantifying construction
materials under electrical works and sanitary / plumbing works. Also, this activity will harness the
mastery of the students in interpreting electrical plan and component of electrical layout and sanitary
/ plumbing layout. Lastly, this activity aims to engage students in actual bidding process by
developing a high-accuracy quantity take-off by calculating the required materials needed to
accomplish electrical works and sanitary / plumbing works.

1.4. Principle of the Activity

In order to perform this activity, the students are expected to understand the principle through actual
and independent evaluation. The student may establish their quantifying skill through holistic
evaluation of non-structural plan and through direct application of principles in quantity estimate.
Moreover, research on the following topics to familiarize and refresh your knowledge about the
background of the activity:
a) National Building Code (NBC)
b) Building Design Criteria and Specifications
c) Requirements for Buildings Design
d) National Electrical Code of the Philippines
e) National Plumbing Code of the Philippines
f) Detailed Quantity Estimate

1.5. Procedures/Instruction
The activity comprises of the following steps:
A. Electrical Quantity Takeoff

FO-ACAD-SDE-00X/20MAR2020/REV.0
Each company should provide detailed quantity survey of non-structural parts of the project under
electrical works and activities.
1.Review the specification to determine the requirements reflected in Electrical Plans. Things to
consider:
• Roughing-ins – Conduit Size (Sizes and Lengths), Wire (Types, Sizes and Lengths),
Outlets (Floor, wall, overhead), Switches (2-, 3-, and 4-way), Panel Boards, Breakers
(Size, number of each), Weatherproof control panels, power requirements
• Finish – Fixtures (Floor, wall, ceiling etc.), Mounting Requirements, Alarm System,
Time Clock, TV Outlet, Heaters
• Miscellaneous – Hook-up for various items from other trades (Motor, boilers, etc)

B. Sanitary / Plumbing Quantity Takeoff

Each company should provide detailed quantity survey of non-structural parts of the project under
sanitary / plumbing works and activities.
1. Review the specification to determine the requirements reflected in Sanitary / Plumbing Plans.
Things to consider:
• Roughing-ins – Permits, Excavation and backfill, Water, gas and sewage lines, Required
Pipes and Fittings, Cleanouts, Valves, tanks, sleeves
• Finish – Water closets, bathtubs, lavatories, drinking fountains, showers, tubs, service
sinks, water heater, urinals, washers and dryers, dishwashers
