Reading
10 Read the email about a TV cooking programme. Are these statements True (T), False (F) or is the
information Not Mentioned (NM)?
Hi Mike,
Were you at home last night? There was a programme on TV that’s really useful for our project on food. The programmes
1\ on Thursday nights aren't usually interesting, but I decided to watch for half an hour after my homework. I was very
glad I did. It was one of those TV chef competitions, but this one was different. It had famous chefs in it and they had to
2\make meals from food that people throw away! But it wasn’t old, horrible food. 3\It wasn’t fresh, but it was still good
enough to eat. They went to shops and street markets and looked in their rubbish bins. There was lots of bread that was
only a day old and there was fruit – things like bananas and strawberries – that was a little brown, but still OK to eat.
They also showed how much good food people throw away at home. It’s terrible. We waste a lot of food because we buy
too much and then we can’t eat it all. And they showed a farmer who can’t sell a lot of his vegetables because they’re too
big or small. It was the same with fish and meat, too.5/ People only want food that looks good. I couldn’t believe it.4/
Some shop owners threw good meat away on Friday because they knew they couldn’t sell it all over the weekend.
I think we can do an interesting project about how people should plan carefully before they go shopping and shouldn’t
buy too much food. 6/And we should suggest some ways to cook food that’s a bit old but still OK to eat. What do you
think? Watch the programme on your computer and we can talk about it at school.
