Configuration of LAN and WAN
Configuration of LAN and WAN
Learning Objectives:
After reading this Chapter, you should be able to:
Local Area Network (LAN) is one of the most common type of network.
It is the basic building block of any computer networks.
In 1973 Robert Metcalfe needed something that was fast, could connect
hundreds of computers, and span a whole building. To solve this problem,
Metcalfe developed a rudimentary form of LAN and dubbed it Ethernet. The
original Ethernet sent roughly a paragraph of data over thick coaxial cable and
could handle a distance of one kilometer.
IP Address
Right click on ‘My Network Places’ icon located on the desktop and in the
popup menu click on properties. You can also find it through the My Computer
window. Alternatively, click ‘Start’ from the taskbar and right click on ‘My
Network Places’ option from the popup menu. In the menu thatappears select
‘Properties’
In the local area connection dialog box that appears under the connection
box, scroll down and select ‘Internet Protocol (TCP/IP) and click on ‘Properties.
1. Click the option ‘Use the following IP Address’. Enter the IP address to use.
It is important that you consult your network administrator on the IP to
use so as to avoid conflicts occurring in the network, i.e. a situation where
two PCs have similar IP addresses. Thereafter, enter the Subnet Mask and
Default gateway. #*The subnet mask is used to identify the network level
you are in while the default gateway identifies the router connection.
2. Thereafter, enter the Preferred DNS server and Alternate DNS server
address.

3. Click ‘OK’ to accept the changes or ‘cancel’ to exit the setup. Check the
option ‘Show icon in notification area when connected’ and #click ‘OK”.
This will enable you to know if the local area connection is connected or
disconnected.
Local Area Network (LAN) is one of the most common type of network
and it is the building block of a network. A network requires an IP address as
defined as a numerical label assigned to each device network interface
identification.
CHAPTER 3
Configure Wide Area Network port
Learning Objectives:
After reading this Information Sheet, you should be able to:
For this kind of network there are lot of things to be consider, the
source of the Internet connection or the Internet Service Provider (ISP),
network configuration or design and most important is the network
hardware.
Procedure in Configuring WAN
1. Plug the provided Power Adapter into the Power jack on the back of the
Modem and Router to other end to a standard electrical wall socket.
2. Connect the WAN port on your Router to the Modem’s LAN port with
an Ethernet cable.
