Geometry 3 - Circles PPT - Handout

1. We learned about the key parts of a circle including the radius, diameter, circumference, chord, arc, and sector. 2. We reviewed formulas to calculate the circumference (C=2πr or C=πd) and area (A=πr^2) of a circle based on the radius or diameter. 3. We also practiced using formulas to find the length of arcs (arc length = θ/360 x 2πr) and the area of sectors (sector area = θ/360 x πr^2) based on the radius, angle, and other given information.

Circumference and Arcs
Circumference of a Circle
• To find the circumference (perimeter) of a circle, use the
formula:

C=2 r OR C= d
C = circumference
r = radius
= Pi (3.14...)
d = diameter

Remember! You can rearrange the

formula to find what you are looking for.
Find the Circumference
1. Find the circumference (c) of a circle C=2 r
with a radius (r) of 5cm.
Which formula is
best to use for
C= d
5cm
Cthis
= question?
2 r
Use = 3.14
C = 2 x 3.14 x 5
C = 31.4cm
Find the Radius
2. Find the radius (r) of a circle with a C=2 r
circumference (c) of 12cm.
m Which formula is
1 2 c

C= d
Cthis

r
Use = 3.14
r = rearrange
First, C the formula
2
r = 12 / 2 x 3.14
r = 1.91cm
Arc of a Circle
• To find the length of an arc, use the formula:

arc length = θ x 2 r
360°
length of θ
θ = the angle of the arc
circumference

Remember! You can rearrange the

formula to find what you are looking for.
Find the Length of an Arc
1. Find the length of the arc when the diameter (d) is 60cm
and the angle of the sector is 45°.

60 arc length = θ/360 x xd

cm
arc length = 45/360 x 3.14 x 60
45°
arc length = 23.55cm
Find the Angle of an Arc
2. Find the angle (θ) of the sector when the radius is 20cm
and the length of the arc is 31.42cm.
31
.4
2c
m arc length = θ/360 x 2 x xr
20cm
First, rearrange the formula
θ = (arc length / 2 x x r) x 360

θ = (31.42 / 2 x 3.14 x 20) x 360

θ = 90°
Area and Sectors
Area of a Circle
• To find the area (interior space) of a circle, use the formula:

A= r2
A = area (units must be squared, e.g. x2)
AREA
r = radius
= Pi (3.14...)

Remember! You can rearrange the

formula to find what you are looking for.
Find the Area of a Circle
1. Find the area of the circle when the diameter is 14cm.

A= r2
14cm

A = 3.14 x (14/2)2
A = 153.86cm2
Find the Area of a Circle
2. Find the radius (r) of a circle with an area of 78.5cm2.

A= r2
78.5cm2 First, rearrange the formula
r=√A/

r = √ 78.5 / 3.14
r = 5cm
Sector of a Circle
• To find the areas of a sector, use the formula:

sector area = θ x r2
360°
area of a circle
θ
θ = the angle of the sector

Remember! You can rearrange the

formula to find what you are looking for.
Find the Area of a Sector
1. Find the area of a sector whose radius is 4.2cm and the
angle of the sector is 60°.

4.
2c
m sector area = θ/360 x x r2
60°
sector area = 60/360 x 3.14 x 4.22
sector area = 9.23cm2
