Weston's Differential Pulley: Rationale

1) The document describes Weston's differential pulley, which uses two pulley wheels of different diameters mounted on the same axle. This allows heavy loads to be lifted with minimal force. 2) It was created by Thomas Weston and manufactured with Richard and George Tangye. It improved on previous designs by efficiently engaging and disengaging the chain from the pulley teeth. 3) The differential pulley has many applications, including in cranes, sailboats, elevators, and industrial machinery, as it allows heavy objects to be moved with less human effort through mechanical advantage.

Weston’s differential pulley

Rationale
Project work is the activity that is intended to integration all the domains of learning i.e.,
cognitive, psychomotor and affective domains wherever application and hence, it is very
important from the teacher and student point of view. Every micro project is basically intended
to integrate more than one course outcome. i.e., more than one unit of the theory and the related
practical stated in the course along with the affective domains skills mentioned over there .since
it is a micro project for a single course, it is not intended to be very complex and report is not
expected to be voluminous. Any project work is not a research but an experience of doing some
complex work by student on their own, or ‘work –based learning ` project can be of micro, mini,
minor and major levels depending on at what stage of learning.

Aims/benefits of the micro project;

Many times is a need to lift the load and depending upon the types of load, intensity of load and
other site condition different lifting machines are used. Weston’s differential pulley block is used
to lift heavy load with constraint of space. After performance this experiment a Diploma
Engineer will be able to decide the suitability of Weston’s differential pulley block based on the
given lifting situation. Thomas is best known for creating ‘The Weston Differential Pulley’
which states when moving large loads with minimal effort a mechanical advantage (MA) is
given.

Thomas is renowned for his creation of The Weston Differential Pulley where two pulley wheels
of differential diameter are mounted on the same axel.  What this is referring to is the speed of
the cable rolling onto a larger pulley in comparison to rolling onto the smaller pulley allowing
you to lift large loads with minimal Force effort. The ratio of the two diameters provides you
with a Velocity ratio. From this, provided you have the weight of the object required to be lifted
you can calculate the Force Effort and the Mechanical Advantage.

A differential pulley also called Weston’s differential pulley sometimes “chain hoist’ or
colloquially “chain fall’ is used to manually lift very heavy object life car engines. The load will
remains in place (and not lower under the force of gravity) until the chain is pulled

 Select the relevant simple lifting machines for given purposes

Literature Review;
The pulleys were manufactured in collaboration with Richard and George Tangye. According
to Richard Tangye's autobiography, the Weston differential pulley evolved from the Chinese
windlass, with an endless chain replacing the finite length of rope. He claimed that many
engineering firms conceded on the difficulty of efficiently disengaging the chain from the teeth
as the pulleys turned, but his firm developed a "pitch" chain which solved the issue. Marketed as
"Weston Differential Pulley Blocks with Patent Chain Guides", the pulley had good sales,
namely, 3000 sets in 9 months. It was displayed in 5 sizes — from 10 long hundredweight
(510 kg) to 3 long tons (3,000 kg) — at the 1862 International Exhibition in London and
received a medal for "original application, practical utility and success".
An ironmonger challenged the Tangyes that the pulley had been in use for 30 years before
Weston's patent but the judge, William Page Wood ruled in favour of the Tangyes because the
engaging mechanism was substantially different from the one presented as evidence.[3]
The Yale Lock Company acquired the patent rights in 1876.[2]

Actual methodology followed

In the micro project of Weston’s differential pulley block, Firsts of all choose title of micro
project with decisions of members. From internet we collect more information on Weston’s
differential pulley block, Ex-introduction, application and benefit. In this micro project Weston’s
differential pulley six members are involve and all members give different point. Each student
collects information on that point. As structure of annexure 1&2 written all information on
project paper. Like Aim, Rational, course outcome etc.

For banner, collect the one 3D image of Weston’s differential pulley and one 2D image.
Described there all dimension of Weston’s differential pulley. And one example on Weston’s
differential pulley from msbte question paper. Add all data and paste in the banner preparation.
In the header of banner include college name, academic year and department name. In the middle
paste 3D and 2D image of pulley and in right one example. This micro project complete with
hard work and with the help of all member support and guidance of sir.

Outputs of the micro project

1) The output of Weston’s differential pulley is decrease human efforts and increases the
machines efforts.
2) We use Weston’s differential pulley to take minimum time to complete work, from this
minimum required time and do not loss human effort.
3) In the many country use new technologies to create modern country we use
4) In this minimum cost is used.

Skill developed/ learning outcomes of this micro project

1) We get more information of Weston’s differential pulley block.
2) We understand uses of Weston’s differential pulley block.
3) We understand typing in computer like symbol and sign.
4) We get knowledge about how to work in group

Application of this micro project

A simple system that has revolutionized the way the human world works is the pulley system.
There are after all easier ways to do everything and science has empowered us. How is that? For
one, human beings are no longer lifting larger weights off the ground and in the near future, we
might be even sending postcards to our friends on another planet.

The one thing which has already happened is the invention of pulley system. It has made life
easier as we no longer need to strain our backs to lift off a load. And a strong man can easily lift
a lot of weight, but a smart man will use a pulley.

The one obvious place that comes to everyone’s mind when asked about the application and use
of pulleys is a crane and the sailboat. But, there are easier set-ups to where pulleys are used and
we hardly pay attention. The blinds of a curtain are moved with the help of a pulley.

The use of a pulley to take out water from a well is one application that almost everyone has seen
in their life. There are other set-ups where pulleys are used but these are not visible to us directly
as they are a part of a bigger machine or mechanism. Pulleys are also used in vehicles to ensure
that the parts of the vehicle work smoothly.

There are innumerable uses of pulleys. Some of the most common ones are:

 A pulley system is used in an elevator to pull the weight of 5 people against gravity.
 A gym is one place where one can find a lot of machines using the pulley system.
 Flagpoles on a sailboat or a ship used a pulley system to hoist a flag or bring it down.
 Pulley systems are used in industrial machines across different applications from production
floor to delivery room.

There’s a catch to this brilliant machine. You use less force with a pulley, but you must pull
more because energy is wasted due to friction; when the rope rubs against the pulley wheels.
Nonetheless, it feels simpler and effortless to use a pulley, now that’s an important thought, isn’t
it?
