EDUC 95: Building and Enhancing New Literacies Across the Curriculum
Second Semester, AY 2021 – 2022
Course Description: This course introduces the concepts of new literacies in the 21st century
as an evolving social phenomena and shared cultural practices across learning areas. The 21st
century literacies shall include (a) globalization and multi-cultural literacy, (b) social literacy, (c)
media literacy, (d) financial literacy, (e) cyber literacy/ digital literacy, (f) eco-literacy, (g) arts
and creativity literacy. Field based – interdisciplinary explorations and other teaching strategies
shall be used in this course.
Course Outcomes: At the end of the course, the students will be able to:
1. discuss and compare conventional and expanded views of literacy in the 21st century;
2. develop a clear understanding of globalization, cultural, and multicultural literacy;
3. explain social literacy and identify the roles of parents and teachers in teaching social
skills to children;
4. assess the level of personal financial literacy;
5. appreciate the importance of developing media and digital literacy both in ourselves and
another in the information age;
6. distinguish among environmental literacy, eco-literacy, and ecological literacy;
7. design creative and innovative classroom activities for specific topic and grade level of
students;
8. apply the principles of critical literacy in designing lesson and classroom activities.

Course Requirements
For this course, you will be required to gather information on various topics through
survey. Afterwards, it will the summary of results and analysis will be presented in class. More
so, you will be asking to present a particular topic.
You will also take two major exams (Midterm and Final Exams) and these are
scheduled on Weeks 9 and 18, respectively.
