Instructional Objectives
 Students will know what a pattern is and will be able to copy and extend an AB color pattern
using colored manipulatives and crayons. 
 

Instructional Procedures 
Before:  Teacher will open lesson with classroom discussion. Teacher will start discussion about
Patterns, reminding students that they have been reviewing patterns and today they will copy,
complete, and possibly create a pattern on their own. Teacher will provide definition of what a
pattern is. Teacher and class will sing Pattern song. Students will help complete two patterns as
they sing the pattern song. Teacher will call on students to help complete pattern on board. 
 
During: Materials needed will be placed at students’ tables. 
Teacher will provide directions of activity. 
Students will have worksheets with an AB color pattern. 
Students will use color manipulatives to copy an AB color pattern. 
Using school iPad, Teacher will walk around to take photos of students’ progress. 
Students will put a thumbs up when they have completed this step. 
Teacher will ring bell or call out an attention grabber to notify students that it is time to move on.
Teacher will tell students that they will now be using their crayons to complete the simple AB
color pattern on the activity sheet. 
Teacher will remind students that they will only need to use two colors to extend the AB color
pattern. 
Students will be instructed to put a thumbs up when they have completed activity. 
Teacher will again ring bell or call out attention grabber to notify students that activity is over
and will be collected. 
Teacher will collect students’ materials and worksheets. 
 
After: Teacher will regain the students focus by using an attention grabber. 
Teacher will ask students if they think they can create a simple AB pattern on their own. 
Students are asked to put up a thumbs up or thumbs down to answer question.
Teacher will hand out turkey coloring sheet. 
Students will use two colors to create a simple AB color pattern on the feathers of the turkey. 
Students will be instructed to put a thumbs up when they have completed simple AB color
pattern on the turkey worksheet. 
Teacher will document students work on assessment sheet.
As teacher collects students completed work, students will be directed to block center or learning
carpet. 
At learning carpet, students will use Legos to create color patterns.
At block center, students will use connecting cubes to create color pattens.

 Provide more time and assistance for students who need help

 Show images of patterns as students create their own patterns


 Allow students who move quickly thru the activity to move on to block carpet to create
