Title: : Implications of Procrastination on Academic Performance of Senior High School

Students in Makapuyat National High school

Chapter 1

Background of the Study

Everyone, regardless of their situation in life, engages in procrastination on a daily basis.

Procrastination is practiced by everyone from children to individuals who have been out of

school for a time. Some argue that it is a sort of deviance since deviance is defined as "any

breach of norms," and avoiding doing what should be done is a violation of norms. People

postpone all the time in today's era of technology and the Internet, though. Procrastination

appears to have become a social norm rather than an exception.

In our everyday activity, we are frequently required to perform several things and have

many implications just a tiny amount of work, or perhaps a lot of effort. Not just for adults who

have taken on parental obligations, but also for young people such as students. Despite having a

large number of assignments and activities to complete, students frequently demonstrate an

extraordinary battle with self-control that is not fully understood.

While dealing with frequent deadlines and working under stess, students are prone to

academic procrastination. Despite feeling worse, this prompts them to delay their assignments

and may have an impact on their academic success. Procrastination is reduced when students'
motivation is sparked, such as by introducing new technology. Any assignment entails meeting

deadlines, but people's emotions vary depending on whether they are positive or bad results of

working under pressure. These effects can have an impact on one's self-perception of efficacy

and well-being, and they frequently lead to task postponement. Procrastination is the term for the

habit of deferring tasks. Procrastinators are aware that delaying their activities would make them

feel worse, yet they persist in delaying their tasks despite their expectations of feeling worse.

Students commonly confused why they had to come up to rest their hands on the table

every time. When it comes to a pile of schoolwork and tasks to do, this was a no. Some may

argue that it is simply a normal unpleasant reaction to a variety of tasks that must be completed.

This is renowned for being lazy in the beginning and cramming in every conceivable manner,

then rushing to complete their task in the conclusion. Genuine procrastination that exists and is

reinforced by preference loops, according to Chrisoula Andereuo (2016), may be either stable or

indictinct. According to Andereuo, it appears that students have a choice whether or not to

procrastinate.

The researcher seek to find the solution for this study for the purpose as follows: a.) To

learn about the attitudes of chosen senior high pupils about procrastination or cramming. B.) To

figure out why kids in senior high school procrastinate. C.) To learn about the consequences of

procrastination on senior high school students.

The researcher believes that this study will contribute the school, students, parents,

and the future researchers.

Title: Sleep Deprivation’s Implication on Academic Performance of Senior High Students in
Makapuyat National High School S.Y 2021-2022

The Scientific Problem

Background of the Study

Sleep deprivation is a common term for a state induced by insufficient quantity or quality

of sleep, including deliberate or involuntary insomnia. Sleep is as essential to the human body as

food and water, but most of us don't get enough of it. Inadequate sleep, poor sleep quality, or

interruptions to the sleep waking cycle have an impact on how we operate during the day,

producing drowsiness, dizziness, and exhaustion.

Due to the pressure of academic work and social activities, sleep deprivation is frequent

among senior high school students who live in a society that favors lower sleep. Poor sleep

hygiene is caused by alcohol, coffee, stimulants, technology, and, most importantly, the usage of

social media platforms, all of which prohibit students from getting enough sleep duration and

quality. Poor sleep has been shown in studies to have immediate deleterious impacts on

hormones, exercise performance, and cognitive function. Sleep deprivation, of course, has an

impact on judgment and mental clarity, as well as other cognitive functions. Every individual,
however, is unique. Someone may be able to function on less sleep, while another may require

the whole eight hours.

Students join the universe of experiences known as higher education through high

schools. Individuals who pursue education envision themselves reaching their long-term

objectives right now. They choose a certain topic of study and then devote years to achieving

their objectives. University is nothing without students. Any university's most valuable asset is

its students. The social and economic growth of a country is determined by the performance of

students and their attitude toward university, which predicts performance. There are a variety of

personal, social, socioeconomic, and environmental elements that influence these students'

perspectives and attitudes, as well as their academic achievement.

University life, as glamorous as it may appear, is not without its difficulties. Some kids

may form a group of friends, while others may struggle to make a single buddy. Some people

may find some things simple, while others may have the opposite viewpoint. We interpret the

messages from the situations we meet via our own lens, and our experiences are affected by what

we perceive and how we interpret them. According to a research published by the Times Higher

Education Supplement, one out of every four students in higher education does not complete

their studies, and just 54% of low-income students complete their studies. Marcus (Marcus,

2004)

Though sleep has no direct correlation with university experiences, it does have a

significant effect in academic success. It has been our experience that the majority of students do

not prioritize sleep. It, like food and exercise, is essential for recharging our batteries. Weak

focus, attentiveness, and even memory degradation are all risks of not getting enough sleep. It
also weakens the brain's ability to retain new knowledge. Because learning happens during our

REM period of sleep, deep sleep is essential for long-term memory.

Importance of your Invention, Innovation or Discovery

The purpose of this study was to see how sleep deprivation affected the academic

performance of Senior high school pupils in Makapuyat National high school . This is a study to

look at the link between academic performance, daytime drowsiness, and sleep deprivation. The

research contributes to our understanding of sleep disorders in Senior high school pupils. With

this information, students and teachers may become more aware of the harmful impacts of sleep

disruptions on academic performance. It is very suggested that senior high students take steps to

enhance their sleeping patterns.

Activity 2

The Scientific Literature

Academic performance has been shown to be impacted by sleep deprivation. Students

who were sleep deprived performed worse on attention, memory, and problem-solving tests,
according to one research, and their academic performance suffered as a result (Curcio, Ferrara,
& Gennaro, 2006).
Students who slept longer had a higher grade point average than those who slept less
(Jensen, 2003). Sleep education is important because students may believe that staying up all
night studying is the most effective approach to remember material and perform well on an
exam. Many students aren't aware of how sleep issues may have a major impact on their
everyday life.
(Suganuma et al.) looked at the link between media consumption and sleep deprivation.
Individuals who utilized electronic media before night were included in the study. The study's
goal was to figure out how many people who use media had trouble sleeping.
According to Peters, B. (2013). Memory consolidation, learning, decision-making, and
critical thinking all require sleep. As a result, sleep is required for effective performance of
critical cognitive functions linked to academic and maybe social success in higher education.
Because of the activities that students participate in, one of their first daily routines to alter is
their sleeping patterns, which is typically not for the better. In the young adult and college
student populations, sleep deprivation and poor sleep quality are particularly common. Indeed,
we know that a good night's sleep is critical for maintaining mood, motivation, memory, and
cognitive function, based on studies from various academic subjects such as medicine and
biology. The brain absorbs new information and establishes new associations when sleeping.
Miki, S. et. al. (January 2017) stated in his previous study entitled “Relationship between
Lifestyle, Quality of Sleep and Daytime Drowsiness of Nursing Students of University” that
there are a variety of reasons why kids don't get enough sleep these days, including staying up
late to watch TV or play video games, staying up late to accomplish homework or participate in
extracurricular activities, and being on social media till all hours of the night. However, this isn't
a good thing. For one thing, not getting enough sleep can impact a child's immune system by
lowering the number of cells that help us fight infections while raising the number of cells that
cause inflammation.
According to the Philippine Inquirer (2015), staying up late to cram for an early exam
may not be beneficial to pupils, according to a recent research focused on college students' sleep
patterns. According to a research published Monday in the journal Scientific Reports, college
students who did not go to bed or wake up at the same time every day had poorer scores. For the
study, 61 Harvard College students kept a 30-day online diary of their sleep routines.
Knight, V. (2017). Children (and hence adults) have been sleeping less and less in recent
decades, according to studies. Adults who grew up with rigorous bedtime guidelines performed
better at work and slept more than an hour longer than those who grew up with no rules about
when to sleep. According to other study, if a healthy adult is deprived of sleep for six days in a
row, his body chemistry will resemble that of someone twice his age, and it will take him a week
to bring his metabolism back to normal.

Title: Sleep Deprivation’s Implication on Academic Performance of Senior High Students in
Makapuyat National High School S.Y 2021-2022

Statement of the Problem (SOP)

The objective of this study is to examine what contributes to sleep deprivation and see

how it then affects academic performance of the senior high students from the present

generation.

Specifically, the study seeks answers to the following questions:

1. What is the profile of the respondents in terms of:

a. Age: ____________________

b. Sex: _____________________

c. Strand: ___________________

2. What impact does sleep deprivation have on a student's performance?

3. Is getting enough sleep beneficial?

4. Will sleep deprivation affect a student's academic performance?

Statement of the Hypothesis

The purpose of this study is to investigate the relation between sleep deprivation and the

academic performance of the students in Makapuyat National High School. Based on the

questions above and following the general trend of the sleep deprivation in most studies, the

present work would generally expect that:

A.) Students in high school are more likely to suffer from sleep deprivation.in contrast to the

lower grades from 7 to 10, since the amount of stress in SHS is more than the amount of

stress in lower marks.

B.) Schoolwork, late sleep habits, and social media platforms are the primary causes of sleep

deprivation.

Hypothesis 1: Although Senior high school students in Makapuyat National high school may be

sleep deprived, they can control and remain focused on their studies in order to retain their

grades and complete their academic assignments.

Hypothesis 2: Makapuyat National high school students are sleep deprived as a result of social

media platforms and poor sleep habits, therefore they are unable to focus on their studies and are

supposed to do schoolwork.
