TASK SUMMARY:
You will be watched working with a baby to:
Part A: Welcome baby and talk with family member/s
Part B: Support learning
Part C: Feed the baby
Part D: Change nappy
Part E: Settle the baby for rest.
INSTRUCTIONS:
For this task you will be watched working and interacting with a baby under 12 months old, doing each of the
tasks listed in the task summary above.
Prior to this assessment make sure that you read and understand, workplace policies and procedures that
refer to caring for babies. Talk to your supervisor or other staff member if there is anything you are not sure of.
It may be necessary to do this assessment over more than one visit if all activities cannot be observed
during the initial visit time.
Remember!
You will need to talk to your supervisor to identify a baby that you can work with for this assessment.
Ideally you will have already worked with this baby so that you are aware of his/her routines and
rituals, and have developed a relationship.
Both the parent and the supervisor will need to give you permission to work with the baby.
Complete the permission form located at the end of this assessment and obtain the
necessary signatures.
You will be supervised at all times during this assessment by a qualified early childhood educator.

PART A: WELCOME BABY AND TALK WITH FAMILY MEMBER/S
For this part of the task your assessor will watch you welcome the baby to the service and make the
transition into the service as smooth as possible for both the baby and the family member/s.
You will need to talk with family member/s about their baby to find out any relevant
information. After this part of the assessment your assessor will ask you some verbal questions.
For this part of the task your assessor will watch you supporting the baby’s learning. You will show the
assessor how you interact with the baby to support physical, cognitive, language and emotional development.
After this part of the assessment your assessor will ask you some verbal questions.
For this part of the task your assessor will watch you feeding the baby. You will need to show your
assessor how you provide a positive mealtime experience.
You will need to demonstrate how formula and breast milk is stored and heated. If either of these two
methods of feeding are not relevant to this baby, demonstrate to your assessor how this would be done.
After this part of the assessment your assessor will ask you some verbal questions.

Your assessor will be looking to see that you can:
Provide a predictable, enjoyable, relaxing and satisfying feeding routine that suits the child’s
individual needs
Recognise cues that the baby is hungry and prepare the baby’s food and/or drink
Make sure all equipment and utensils are clean and sterilised as needed
Store and prepare formula and breast milk correctly for the baby
Demonstrate correct procedures for storing and preparing both formula and breast milk
Give the baby individual attention during the feed, including physical contact (cuddles) when
giving his/her bottle
Interact and talk with the baby as the feed is prepared and given.
For this part of the task your assessor will watch how you change the baby’s nappy.
After this part of the assessment your assessor will ask you some verbal questions.
For this part of the task your assessor will watch how you settle the baby for rest and sleep.

ASSESSMENT TASK 3: JOURNAL
TASK SUMMARY:
You will keep a journal of care activities for two babies/toddlers over a two-day period.
If your assessor sees that you have not completed all parts of this journal correctly and satisfactorily,
you will be provided with appropriate feedback from your assessor and given a chance to complete
the task again. Timeframes for resubmission will be discussed with you when you are given the
outcome for this task.
INSTRUCTIONS:
You must complete the following journal templates by documenting the care that you provide to two children
over a period of two days.
One of the children must be a toddler aged between 12 and 24 months.
The other child may be any age under 24 months. This child may not be the same baby as you worked
with in Assessment Task 2.
One of the children must be quite new to the service, or have very recently changed rooms.
Your work placement supervisor will need to sign off each page of your journal to show that the
information you are providing is a true and accurate account of your experiences.
Care provided will include:
Welcoming and settling baby/toddler to the service
Interacting with the baby/toddler to support learning
Responding to baby/toddler’s needs
Feeding the baby/toddler
Nappy change/toileting
Rest and sleep
Checking immunisation record
Communicating with family member/s at the end of the day.

Remember!

assessment. Photos of the baby/toddler may be used only if the parent has given their
permission.
