 If you are a class-based student you will do this task in your work placement during a visit by
your assessor.
 If you are a workplace based student you will do this task during a workplace visit by your assessor.
 You will be provided with the date of this visit so you can write it in your Student Assessment Booklet.

WHAT DO I NEED TO SUBMIT?

 You do not need to submit anything for this task.

WHAT DO I NEED TO DO IF I GET SOMETHING WRONG?

If your assessor sees that you have not demonstrated the required techniques/skills you will need to re-do
this assessment task. A timeframe for this will be given to you upon feedback from your assessor.

INSTRUCTIONS:
For this task you will be watched working and interacting with a baby under 12 months old, doing each of the
tasks listed in the task summary above.
Prior to this assessment make sure that you read and understand, workplace policies and procedures that
refer to caring for babies. Talk to your supervisor or other staff member if there is anything you are not sure of.
It may be necessary to do this assessment over more than one visit if all activities cannot be observed
during the initial visit time.

Remember!
 You will need to talk to your supervisor to identify a baby that you can work with for this assessment.
 Ideally you will have already worked with this baby so that you are aware of his/her routines and
rituals, and have developed a relationship.
 Both the parent and the supervisor will need to give you permission to work with the baby.
 Complete the permission form located at the end of this assessment and obtain the
necessary signatures.
 You will be supervised at all times during this assessment by a qualified early childhood educator.

 PART A: WELCOME BABY AND TALK WITH FAMILY MEMBER/S
For this part of the task your assessor will watch you welcome the baby to the service and make the
transition into the service as smooth as possible for both the baby and the family member/s.
You will need to talk with family member/s about their baby to find out any relevant
information. After this part of the assessment your assessor will ask you some verbal questions.

Your assessor will be looking to see that you can:

 Talk with the family to assist with transition from home to care
 Be welcoming to the baby and family members
 Help the baby to settle and deal with distress if necessary
 Interact one-on-one with the baby to help them to feel secure and nurtured.

PART B: SUPPORT LEARNING

For this part of the task your assessor will watch you supporting the baby’s learning. You will show the
assessor how you interact with the baby to support physical, cognitive, language and emotional development.
After this part of the assessment your assessor will ask you some verbal questions.

Your assessor will be looking to see that you:

 Provide a healthy, safe and stimulating environment for baby to develop their physical,
cognitive, language, social and emotional skills
 Encourage the baby to practice and build new skills depending on their development stage, eg
rolling over, sitting, crawling and walking
 Encourage the baby’s exploration by hands, mouth and body to develop self-awareness and
a knowledge of their world.
 Supervise the baby closely, especially when he/she is in a situation that is more risky (for
example, when putting things in mouth, at risk of falling, etc)
 Support cognitive and language development by initiating, modelling and responding to baby’s
cues, sounds and gestures.
 Talk to the baby about everyday things, for example describing things, talking about what is
happening etc.
 Provide opportunities for relaxed and physical contact.

PART C: FEED THE BABY

For this part of the task your assessor will watch you feeding the baby. You will need to show your
assessor how you provide a positive mealtime experience.
You will need to demonstrate how formula and breast milk is stored and heated. If either of these two
methods of feeding are not relevant to this baby, demonstrate to your assessor how this would be done.
After this part of the assessment your assessor will ask you some verbal questions.

 Your assessor will be looking to see that you can:
 Provide a predictable, enjoyable, relaxing and satisfying feeding routine that suits the child’s
individual needs
 Recognise cues that the baby is hungry and prepare the baby’s food and/or drink
 Make sure all equipment and utensils are clean and sterilised as needed
 Store and prepare formula and breast milk correctly for the baby
 Demonstrate correct procedures for storing and preparing both formula and breast milk
 Give the baby individual attention during the feed, including physical contact (cuddles) when
giving his/her bottle
 Interact and talk with the baby as the feed is prepared and given.

PART D: CHANGE NAPPY

For this part of the task your assessor will watch how you change the baby’s nappy.
After this part of the assessment your assessor will ask you some verbal questions.

Your assessor will be looking to see that you can:

 Recognise when the baby needs a nappy change
 Provide a positive and enjoyable nappy changing experience, using the opportunity to respond to
the baby’s cues, sounds and exploratory behaviour
 Change nappy using hygienic practices and following workplace procedures
 Meet the individual child’s routines and needs
 Supervise the baby at all times when on the change table
 Talk to the baby about the routine and what is happening.

PART E: SETTLE THE BABY FOR REST

For this part of the task your assessor will watch how you settle the baby for rest and sleep.
After this part of the assessment your assessor will ask you some verbal questions.

Your assessor will be looking to see that you:

 Recognise baby’s cues that he/she is tired
 Unsettled, grizzly, rubbing eyes, crying etc
 Make sure there is a safe, comfortable and relaxing sleep environment and experience
 Use SIDS prevention strategies
 Make sure that bedding is clean, and that cots, bedding and equipment are suitable for use
 Provide a relaxation and sleep routine that is enjoyable and predictable for the baby
 Settle the baby using their rituals and routines, including providing their comfort item.

You will keep a journal of care activities for two babies/toddlers over a two-day period.

 If you are a class-based student you will do this task in your work placement.
 If you are a workplace based student you will do this task in your workplace.
 You will be provided with the date of this assessment so you can write it in their Student
Assessment Booklet.

WHAT DO I NEED TO SUBMIT?

 If your assessor sees that you have not completed all parts of this journal correctly and satisfactorily,

INSTRUCTIONS:
You must complete the following journal templates by documenting the care that you provide to two children
over a period of two days.
One of the children must be a toddler aged between 12 and 24 months.
The other child may be any age under 24 months. This child may not be the same baby as you worked
with in Assessment Task 2.
One of the children must be quite new to the service, or have very recently changed rooms.
Your work placement supervisor will need to sign off each page of your journal to show that the
information you are providing is a true and accurate account of your experiences.
Care provided will include:

 Feeding the baby/toddler
