Want to inject some flavor into your everyday text chat? You're in luck! Discord uses
Markdown, a simple plain text formatting system that'll help you make your sentences
stand out. Here's how to do it! Just add a few characters before & after your desired text to
change your text! I'll show you some examples...
Sweet Styles
Italics *italics* or _italics_ Underline italics __*underline italics*__
Bold **bold** Underline bold __**underline bold**__
__***underline bold
Bold Italics ***bold italics*** underline bold italics
italics***__
Underline __underline__ Strikethrough ~~Strikethrough~~
Don't want to use markdown? Pop your message in a code block and you're good to go!
Code Blocks
1) Discord also supports code blocks as well. You can make your own code blocks by
wrapping your text in backticks (`)
2) You can also use three backticks (```) to create multiline code blocks, like this beautifully
written haiku.
Block Quotes
Markdown now supports Block Quotes!
PS: Spoilers are a kind of Markdown formatting, too! Using the syntax ||
around your text will mark it as a spoiler. This is also negated by a code block.

Don't you just hate it when you have that one friend that tells you that Wumpus
McWumperton dies in the next season of Discord High?
Please note that text marked as Spoiler within code blocks will not be hidden.
Once you mark it as a spoiler, you will see two bars in the front and back of the selected
message. The spoiler text should look something like this:
You can also manually tag spoilers by using the Markdown syntax ||Insert
spoilers here|| or typing /spoiler before your message.
Image/Video/Link Spoilers
You can mark attachments as spoilers by uploading the attachment, then clicking the Mark
as Spoiler checkbox before you press upload.
You can mark a link as spoilers by simply adding the two bars in front and back of the link
URL.
Please note that Discord server invites embeds cannot be hidden via spoiler
tags.
On servers I moderate: I am the Law, therefore I cannot have spoiler tags slowing me
down.
(Moderate means you have a role with Manage Messages enabled)
Always: As I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I take a look at my life and
realize there's nothing left to spoil.
Currently, you can only disable the spoiler tag feature on the
Desktop/Browser app
This works for embedded links, too. If you want to make a link into a spoiler, just wrap your
link in bars!
On iOS specifically, you can mark text as spoilers by selecting the text in the text box and
tapping it to open the context menu. Once you have the text selected, you can tap Mark as
Spoiler to wrap the selected text in bars.
