Markdown Text 101 (Chat Formatting:

Bold, Italic, Underline)

 Updated

Want to inject some flavor into your everyday text chat? You're in luck! Discord uses
Markdown, a simple plain text formatting system that'll help you make your sentences
stand out. Here's how to do it! Just add a few characters before & after your desired text to
change your text! I'll show you some examples...

Sweet Styles
Italics *italics* or _italics_ Underline italics __*underline italics*__
Bold **bold** Underline bold __**underline bold**__
__***underline bold
Bold Italics ***bold italics*** underline bold italics
italics***__
Underline __underline__ Strikethrough  ~~Strikethrough~~

Don't want to use markdown? Pop your message in a code block and you're good to go!

Code Blocks
1) Discord also supports code blocks as well.  You can make your own code blocks by
wrapping your text in backticks (`)

2) You can also use three backticks (```) to create multiline code blocks, like this beautifully
written haiku.
Block Quotes
Markdown now supports Block Quotes!

The syntax to use Block Quotes is > or >>> followed by a space.

> at the beginning of a line of text, creates a single-line block quote.

>>> at the beginning of a line of text, creates a multi-line block quote. All text from >>> until
the end of the message will be included in the quote
And you get the idea! Now you're a Discord text markdown expert. Get out
there and highlight your statements!

PS: Spoilers are a kind of Markdown formatting, too! Using the syntax ||
around your text will mark it as a spoiler. This is also negated by a code block.

Don't you just hate it when you have that one friend that tells you that Wumpus
McWumperton dies in the next season of Discord High?

We now have a solution for you! Introducing Spoiler Tags!

How does it work?
With spoiler tags, you can mark individual parts of messages or the entire message as a
spoiler. The easiest way to mark your message as a Spoiler is by highlighting the text, click
on the eye icon. This will mark that portion of the message as a spoiler.

Please note that text marked as Spoiler within code blocks will not be hidden.

Once you mark it as a spoiler, you will see two bars in the front and back of the selected
message. The spoiler text should look something like this:

You can also manually tag spoilers by using the Markdown syntax ||Insert
spoilers here|| or typing /spoiler before your message.

I need to see it!

Once you made up your mind, and decide to peek into Pandora's box, go ahead and click on
the spoiler box.
I made a mistake, please hide it from my
eyes
You can re-hide all spoilers revealed by leaving the channel, but keep in mind, you can
never unsee what you have seen.

Image/Video/Link Spoilers
You can mark attachments as spoilers by uploading the attachment, then clicking the Mark
as Spoiler checkbox before you press upload.

Unfortunately, Image/Video spoilers are only on the Desktop client

You can mark a link as spoilers by simply adding the two bars in front and back of the link
URL.

Please note that Discord server invites embeds cannot be hidden via spoiler
tags.

Bold of you to assume I fear spoilers

For the brave souls who wish to journey into the spoiler territory: If you wish to turn off the
spoiler tag feature, you may do so by going to User Settings > Text & Images:

On click: Never mind, I want to go back. Please hide all spoilers.

On servers I moderate: I am the Law, therefore I cannot have spoiler tags slowing me
down.
(Moderate means you have a role with Manage Messages enabled)

Always: As I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I take a look at my life and
realize there's nothing left to spoil.

Currently, you can only disable the spoiler tag feature on the
Desktop/Browser app

Spoiler Tags on Mobile

You can mark text as spoilers on mobile using the same Markdown syntax as on desktop.
Wrap your text in bars ||just like this|| and it'll show up as spoilers when you post it!

This works for embedded links, too. If you want to make a link into a spoiler, just wrap your
link in bars!

On iOS specifically, you can mark text as spoilers by selecting the text in the text box and
tapping it to open the context menu. Once you have the text selected, you can tap Mark as
Spoiler to wrap the selected text in bars.
