Grammar
• Rules of a language governing the
sounds, words, sentences, and other
elements, as well as their combination
and interpretation.
• The word grammar also denotes the
study of these abstract features or a
book presenting these rules.
What is Grammar
Translation Method?
A method of teaching foreign languages derived from the
classical method of teaching Greek and Latin. In grammar-
translation classes, students learn grammatical rules and
then apply those rules by translating sentences between the
target language and the native language
Two Main Goals:
1. To enable students to read and translate
literature written in the target language
2. To further students’ general intellectual
development
Language Theory
As didactics play an important role on how, why, when etc.… the students are
learning the new language. The Grammar Translation method embraces a
wide range of approaches but, broadly speaking, the basic approach is to
analyze and study the grammatical rules of the language, usually in an order
roughly matching the traditional order of grammar, and then practice
manipulating grammatical structures through the means of translation both into
and from the mother tongue.

Mercury
2. Uses vocabulary words
Venus is the second It’s the closest planet
planet from the Sun to the Sun
Neptune Saturn

planet from the Sun has several rings
Jupiter
Characteristics:
1. Focuses on reading & writing
• The primary focus of GTM is on reading and writing
with little or no systematic attention to listening and
speaking
6. Emphasizes accuracy
• Students are expected to attain high standards in translation.
They must be accurate in translating the sentences into their
target language and vice-versa.
Disadvantages &
Advantages of
ESPAÑOL
Grammar Translation
Method
Advantages:
• By telling the meaning of the word or sentence in mother
tongue, the teacher can at once make the students understand.
• The students are able to learn many items of English by
comparison with mother tongue.
• The comprehension of the students can be tested very easily.
Advantages:
• Knowledge is acquired gradually, by traversing the facts of
language and the syntactic mechanisms, going from simplest to
the most complex.
• Learning grammar, the students examine the texts developing
awareness that language constitutes a system which can be
analyzed.
Disadvantages:
• No oral work takes place in the class room due
to this method. Only teacher speaks.
• The main focus remains only on the mother-
tongue and the target language remains
ignored.
Disadvantages:
• No speaking in the target language is possible.
The only thrust remains on the reading.
• The students don't develop the power of thinking
in the target language. They become mentally
lazy.
Activities/
Exercises
1. Translation of a literary passage
Students translate a reading passage
from the target language into their native
language
2. Reading comprehension
questions
Students answer questions in the target
language based on their understanding
of the reading passage
3. Antonyms/Synonyms
Students are given one set of words and
are asked to find antonyms in the
reading passage.
4. Fill-in-the-blanks
Students are given a series of
sentences with words missing
5. Deductive application of rule
Grammar rules are presented with
examples. Once students understand a
rule, they are asked to apply it to some
different example.
