Welcome to Second Grade!
Second Grade is an exciting year of new discoveries and experiences! Your
children will gain confidence in their abilities and become more independent each
day! It is our pleasure and great responsibility to work together with you to support
them in this journey.
We know that communication is the key to a successful year, which is why
we will be sending home weekly newsletters to keep you updated with the latest
information about our learning progress and upcoming events! We plan to do this
electronically, so please let us know the best email to reach you at!
We hope this packet will answer most of your questions regarding our
classroom procedures and policies. Please don’t hesitate to contact us with any
additional questions you might have!
Thank you for blessing us with your children this year. We look forward to
the opportunity to teach them about God’s word and point them closer to Him!
Much fun and joy ahead!
-Miss. Raupp & Mrs. Crowe
Curriculum
Religion: Concordia- One in Christ
The children receive unit booklets containing Bible stories and application activities. There is a
separate Memory Book containing Bible verses, The Ten Commandments, and creeds. We extend
the religion curriculum by integrating Christ into every part of our school day. We give our lives to the
Lord, and He will definitely be at the center of all we do in 2nd grade!

Reading: Macmillian/McGraw-Hill- Treasures

This reading series focuses on comprehension, fluency, advancing phonemic awareness, phonics,
and high-frequency word recognition skills, extending understanding of narrative and informational
text, and increasing efficiency in written communication. Leveled readers are used as supporting
tools.

Math: Scott Foresman/ EnVision

Manipulatives are a principal part of this curriculum. Problem solving is emphasized, as well as the
real life application of the mathematical process. The focus is on thinking mathematically and
exploring various ways to solve the problem.

Social Studies: Scott Foresman- People and Places

The children will explore community, history, and geography through projects, presentations, and fun
learning experiences.

Science: Macmillian/McGraw-Hill- A Closer Look

We will cover a variety of exciting topics in life, earth, space, and physical sciences. We will learn
about the scientific process, conduct experiments, and investigate God’s awesome creations. This
class will be full of hands-on experiences.

Spelling: Houghton Mifflin

A list of 16 words Students will practice the words throughout the week using technology (Spelling
City), writing assignments, and other activities. The final test is on Friday.
Writing/LA/English: Houghton Mifflin
Skills include correct sentence writing and identifying sentence components. We will examine and
compose personal narratives, as well as explore expository writing. We will use writer’s workshop to
pre-write, draft, edit, revise, and publish a variety of creative works.

Handwriting:
We will be reviewing all numbers and letters of the alphabet. We will concentrate on correct
formation, correct pencil grip, neatness, and accuracy. Handwriting grades will come from daily
written work as well.

SPECIALS
Physical Education:
Students will go to the gym twice a week for 30 minutes. Please make sure your child is dressed in
something that won’t be damaged. The children need to have a separate pair of gym shoes for this
class. These shoes should be non-marking, close toed, and properly secured to your child’s feet.
This helps ensure the maintenance of the gym floor and safety of the student. Also, check
periodically to make sure the shoes still fit! Somehow the shoes grow smaller during the year!

Music:
Students attend music class once a week. Instruction builds on what they have learned in the past
and will focus on tempo, notes, and various types of music from a variety of composers.

Spanish:
All students will have Spanish once a week for 30 minutes. They will learn about Spanish culture,
new vocabulary words, and practice using the language through a variety of fun activities!

Technology:
Once a week the children will visit the computer lab in the I.R.C to further develop their keyboarding
skills. In our classrooms students will use the interactive Smart Board, document camera, and iPads.

Library:
Once a week we will also visit the library. Students will have an opportunity to check out books during
this scheduled time.

CLASSROOM LOGISTICS
Chapel:
We have chapel every Wednesday morning (See school calendar for the exceptions). All parents are
welcome to attend. After chapel the children may change into something more suitable for the
playground if desired (see the school handbook for the chapel dress policy). Our 2nd grade classes
will also be responsible for leading chapel services during the year! More information will be sent
home with your child regarding dates and times for these services.

Homework Folders:
Homework folders will be sent home with your child Monday-Friday. Daily homework will often
include reading, math, and memory work. Although some time is given in class to complete the daily
work, there will be times when the children will not finish it at school. In most cases the homework will
be turned in the following day. How much of this work and how often it comes home depends on the
child’s ability to work quickly and accurately in the school setting.

Grading:
Students will receive separate grades for Reading, Math, Science, Social Studies, Language Arts,
Spelling, and Religion. The grades will come from a variety of activities, assessments, participation,
and memory work.

Memory Work:
Students will be responsible for memorizing one-two verses a week. The verses will be included in
the newsletter and in the yellow memory books. Students will be graded on their ability to recite the
verses from memory. The memory work grade will be factored into their overall religion grade. Please
help your child be successful by practicing the verses at home daily!

Snack:
Students will need a snack every day. Please follow the St Peter Food Guidelines or the snack will
be returned home.

Toys:
Please do not allow your child to bring toys to school. Toys can be very distracting and may get
broken or lost. This includes Fidget Spinners.

Birthdays:
Students may celebrate their birthday by bringing a non-edible treat for the class. If you have any
special concerns or requests please share those with us!

Classroom Parties:
We will have several celebrations throughout the year including Thanksgiving Feast, Christmas party,
Valentines party, He is Risen party, and End of the Year party. We need wonderful parents to help
coordinate these celebrations and/or help by donating supplies. Please speak with your child’s
teacher if you are so able!

Field Trips:
We will be taking two fieldtrips this year. Our tentative schedule is the Wildlife Recovery Center in the
fall and a play performance in the spring. Dates are still to be determined. More information will be
given in our newsletters as plans are made.
