The Procedure For Setting Dogless Homes For VCN COMMONALITY

This document provides instructions for setting home positions for the X, Y, and Z axes of a machine tool without homing proxes. It describes the necessary software parameters, tools needed, and step-by-step process for measuring the machine geometry and using manual controls to move the axes to calculated home positions, which are then set in the controller. Safety warnings are given about carefully adjusting soft limits after setting home to avoid crashing the machine.

Software and Parameters

1) PLC 562M2106 or higher

2) LPC 562M2106 or higher
3) RB12 bit 6 = 1(Origin set mode)
4) RB22 bit 5 = 1(Origin set menu)
5) RB26 bit 3 = 1(Dogless machine)
6) M18 bit 4 on axis = 1
7) M18 bit 7 on axis = 1
8) SV017 bit 7 = 1

See below for information regarding commonality

machines. Do not change parameter RB 26 bit 3.

1) PLC D30K1004 or higher

2) LPC D30K1004 or higher
5) RB27 bit 7 = 1 (Dogless machine)
- M16 for all axis = 0

Tools

1) Spindle Chuck (May need small

Allen wrench for chucking tool
depending on the type of collets
or chuck you are using.)
2) A tool to put in the chuck with a
fine end point
3) Tape Measure
4) Marker
5) 304.8 Head bar for Z axis or item
that has a known height (If high
column will have to use longer
bar or items to add to height due
to Z home being higher up.)
6) Indicator
7) Mirror
8) Rags and cleaner

3
Finding and setting X axis home
1) Using tape measure and marker, measure the
length of the table horizontal and vertical making
sure to mark half the lengths on the table
showing the center line. ( Mark on top of table
and use T-slot to prevent running tool into table
top.)
If you have drawing showing strokes from object
on table such as a rotary table you are welcome
to use.
2) Align center point with tip of tool using the pulse
generator( hand wheel). For details on how to
move look in machine manual. Example table centerline
3) Once you have tool to mark move Z axis out of
the way.
4) Set X position to zero by pushing the down
arrow on the keyboard. When X position is
highlighted push 0 then input.
5) Move X axis half of the full X stroke of the
machine to the direction of home
position.(Check mechanical drawings for strokes
and home positions locations)

Note: If Home position is already set and you are just

adjusting you may need to increase soft limits
(M8 and M9 to get to stroke limits. )
WARNING CAN CRASH MACHINE IF NOT
CAREFUL. SET BACK TO ORIGINAL
SETTING AFTER DONE

4
Finding and setting X axis home Cont.
6) Once X axis is in place push the maintenance 1
key
Note: have to be in manual mode to select.
7) From here hit softkey ATC Menu then far right
softkey and axes home set keys are displayed
8) Hold down MF1 and MF2 and push softkey
labeled X Axis Home Set
9) On Screen the light beside X axis should turn red
and position is set to zero. If not check to make
sure the parameters are set correctly.
Can repeat steps 1-9 as many times as needed
but after setting home first time many have to
open up soft limits to get full machine stroke.

WARNING CAN CRASH MACHINE IF

NOT CAREFUL. SET SOFT LIMITS BACK
TO ORIGINAL SETTING AFTER DONE

Finding and setting Y axis home
1) Using tape measure and marker, measure the
length of the table horizontal and vertical making
sure to mark half the lengths on the table
showing the center line. ( Mark on top of table
and use T-slot to prevent running tool into table
top.)
If you have drawing showing strokes from object
on table such as a rotary table you are welcome
to use.
2) With indicator in chuck use the T-Slot to find
the center point of the table. If you have
drawings of an object, such as a rotary table, you Example table centerline
may also use to find home position coming from
the center line.
3) Once you have found center Y move Z axis out
of the way.
4) Set Y position to zero by pushing the down
arrow on the keyboard. When Y position is
highlighted push 0 then input.
5) Move Y axis half of the full Y stroke of the
machine to the direction of home
position.(Check mechanical drawings for strokes
and home positions locations)

Note: If Home position is already set and you are just

adjusting you may need to increase soft limits
(M8 and M9 to get to stroke limits. )
WARNING CAN CRASH MACHINE IF NOT
CAREFUL. SET BACK TO ORIGINAL
SETTING AFTER DONE

Finding and setting Y axis home Cont.
6) Once Y axis is in place push the maintenance 1
key
Note: have to be in manual mode to select.
7) From here hit softkey ATC Menu then far right
softkey and axes home set keys are displayed
8) Hold down MF1 and MF2 and push softkey
labeled Y Axis Home Set
9) On Screen the light beside Y axis should turn red
and position is set to zero. If not check to make
sure the parameters are set correctly.
Can repeat steps 1-9 as many times as needed
but after setting home first time many have to
open up soft limits to get full machine stroke.

NOT CAREFUL. SET SOFT LIMITS BACK

Finding and setting Z axis home
1) After removing tool Chuck place 304.8 head bar
on flat surface of the machines table top
vertically.( Note: can use any item that you know
the height of to set Z home. Object much be tall
enough that Z axis will not hit hard stop.
If you have drawing showing strokes from object
on table such as a rotary table you are welcome
to use.
2) Move Z axis down, using the pulse generator on
NC controller, until spindle face is smug against
the object being used for height . If not sure what
is spindle face due to mechanics then check Example table centerline
mechanical drawings.
3) At this point set Z position display to zero by
pushing the down arrow on the keyboard. When
Z position is highlighted push 0 then input.
4) Using Machines stroke drawings move Z axis up
to the calculated position to get true Z stroke.
(True Stroke = X + Object height)
(EX. 660 = X + 304.80 X = 355.20 so you
will need to move Z axis up 355.20 from object
then set home)
(Note: High Column machines you may have to
use more then one object with known height to
get Z axis true stroke.)

Note: If Home position is already set and you are just

adjusting you may need to increase soft limits
(M8 and M9 to get to stroke limits. )
WARNING CAN CRASH MACHINE IF NOT
CAREFUL. SET BACK TO ORIGINAL
SETTING AFTER DONE
