Quick Start Guide

What You Need

 RTU2020 controller
 RTU2020 Software Media Kit
 Ethernet cable
 24 VDC power source and cable
 Computer to host RTU Builder

RTU2020 Factory Default Network Settings

The following table lists the factory default network settings of RTU2020. If your RTU
has been previously configured, these settings may have been changed.
Port Default Setting
ETH 1 IP address is dynamically assigned from a DHCP server.
If no DHCP server is found by RTU2020, an IPv4 link-local address
will be assigned, (169.254.x.x).
ETH 2 Static IP address: 192.168.1.50

Step 1: Install RTU Builder

1. Insert the RTU2020 Software Media Kit into the DVD-ROM drive of
your target computer.
2. In the Application directory, double-click rtu_builder_setup.exe.
3. Follow the on screen prompts to install RTU Builder.
For full instructions on how to install RTU Builder, see the RTU2020 Software
Installation User’s Guide.

Step 2: Power up RTU2020

1. Connect 24 VDC supply to RTU2020.

2. According to the RTU factory default network settings for Ethernet port
1 and Ethernet port 2 in the above table, connect an Ethernet cable to
the port most appropriate for your situation.
3. Connect the other end of the Ethernet cable to your RTU Builder
computer directly or through a switch.

For full instructions on how to install RTU2020 controller, see the RTU2020
Hardware Planning and Installation User’s Guide.

Step 3: Prepare to Change RTU2020’s IP Address

The first thing you will normally want to do is set the IP address for RTU2020. To
prepare for that, this step describes how to configure a fixed IP address starting with
creating a new project.
1. Launch RTU Builder by selecting Start > All Programs > Honeywell
> RTU Builder > RTU Builder or double click the shortcut for RTU
Builder on the desktop. The RTU Builder Start Page appears.

2. From Start Page, click Create Project. The Create New Project from
Template window appears.
3. In the Available Templates list, click the default template.

4. Click Next. The Save As dialogue box appears. Select appropriate

directory to save the project file and enter the name for the project in
the File name box. Click Save. The Home Page appears.

5. From Home Page, click the arrow next to Configure Ethernet Ports
under Communication.
6. Select the target port and the corresponding configuration interface
appears.
7. Under Network Setting, select Use the following IP address and
type IP Address, Subnet Mask and Gateway.
8. Under Protocol Binding, make sure to select RTU Configuration
Protocol check box.
This is the protocol RTU Builder uses to communicate to RTU2020. If it
is not selected, RTU Builder cannot communicate to the RTU through
that port.
9. If you need a SCADA system or other devices to communicate to this
RTU, then you should select the other relevant protocols. E.g.,
‘Modbus TCP Slave’ might be used for a SCADA system.
TIP: If an Ethernet port is not required, if you do not plug a cable into
that port, then the RTU will consume less power. This is irrespective of
the configuration of that port. Port 1 consumes more power than port 2.
If only one port is required and power consumption is important, then
we recommend using port 2.
10. Click Save to save the changes and click Back to return to Home Page.

Step 4: Connect to RTU2020 and Download Project

You now have a project file prepared with the new IP address configured. This step
describes how to connect to RTU2020 from RTU Builder and download the
configuration.
1. From Home Page, click Connect RTU. The Connect RTU window
appears.
2. Select the target RTU from the scan list.
3. In the User name drop-down list, select Engineer. If this is the first
time connecting to the RTU, you need to type in the initial password
'Engr@123', and then you will be prompted to change the password

immediately. Remember your new password as it will be required for

future logins.
4. Click Connect.
5. Click Download. After download completes, click OK.
6. Depending on which port you have configured in the project, you may
need to change which port the Ethernet cable is plugged into at the
RTU. Click Connect. Select the target RTU in the Connect RTU pop-
up window.
7. Select your current user name. And type the password. Click Connect.

Step 5: You are Ready to Configure and Program

Your RTU
The RTU is now configured with your IP address. To continue with other RTU
configuration settings such as I/O and to program your RTU, see the RTU2020
User's Guide for further assistance.
