This document outlines a school project to find the most cost-effective hardware store and tiler to re-tile a bathroom. It describes collecting price data from multiple hardware stores and interviews with tilers to get estimates on materials, labor costs, and time to complete the job. Tables will be used to compile and compare this financial data to determine the optimal solution within budget.

Acknowledgment
We would like to acknowledge the assistance received from our teacher, family and friends
encouraging us and giving us the support needed to do our best. Our teacher Mr. Scarlett for
encouraging us and ensuring we fully understand the content required, making us
competent enough to carry out the necessary tasks of life with the application of mathematical
concepts and principles. Our friends and family members for providing the support we need and
doing as much as possible to help us in obtaining the best results possible. To the sales clerks
that
willingly spoke and explained to us the costs and effectiveness of the materials of our solutions.
To the contractor for listening and explaining the cost of each project. To the Caribbean
Examination Council and Ardenne High School for giving us the opportunity and drive to strive
for excellence. So once again thank you all for the support and continuous encouragement.

Introduction
In this assignment, our aim is to research and identify the most cost-effective method to solve the
following problem:
The Green family recently purchased a house and will be doing various renovations over a
period of time, they have decided to start with the re-tilling of the main bathroom which includes
the floor, the walls and the shower. To complete the job in the most cost-effective manner the
Greens will be visiting Active Home Center, Tile City and Home Center and Total Hardware and
Supplies to compare prices whilst taking into consideration a white aesthetic. Additionally, they
would like to know the optimal cost for re-tiling the bathroom after consulting various
contractors. The total cost includes the cost for the wall, shower tiles, floor tiles, wall thinset,
floor thinset, cement, tile strip, grout and the cost of the contractor.

Our objectives are:

● To compare the prices of materials at the different stores to be visited.
● To compare the overall labor cost amongst multiple contractors.

This school-based assessment (SBA) is based on measurements, money, and invoices, under the
unit of Consumer Arithmetic. This helps to develop students within the areas of competence,
creativity, critical thinking as well as basic mathematical concepts and principles.

Method of Data Collection

During the course of this project, group members obtained data by applying various methods of
data collection. The methods of data collection include:
● Calculating the dimensions and area of the bathroom and drawing the floor plan was done
for a clear image of the room.
● Visiting different hardware stores and obtaining the average cost of the necessary
materials required to solve the problem with the use of invoices.
● Obtaining knowledge of possible solutions to our problem by consulting a professional in
the field of construction using an interview.

The cost of materials will be acquired by requesting an invoice from the following hardware
stores Active Home Center, Tile City and Home Center and Total Hardware and Supplies.

During the interviews at the business places, employees were asked questions such
as:

1. Which tiles would you recommend to tile a bathroom?

2. Why do you recommend these tiles?
3. What are the measurements and cost per unit of the recommended tiles
4. Can we get an invoice with all the necessary items for reference?

During the interview with the workmen, the questions asked were:

1. What will be the overall cost of the job

2. How many tiles will be needed based on your measurements?
3. How long will it take to complete the job?

The data collected will be presented using various statistical representations including tables, a
bar graph and a column chart.
