Lesson 1.1 – Meaning of History

The word history is derived from the Greek term “historia” which means “inquiry or
research”. Thus, the term history refers to accounts or inquiries of events that happened
in the past and are narrated in chronological order.

According to Aristotle, regarded as the father of logic, history is a systematic

account of a set of natural phenomena which are arranged in chronological order.

The great historians Thucydides and Herodotus (Father of History) defined history
as never-ending dialogue of events between the past and the present.

Lesson 1.2 – Importance of History

It is said that history is to the human race whereas memory is to each man. It
does not only shed the light of the past upon the present. It also:

1. Helps every person to draw conclusion from the past events helping the person
to understand himself by being acquainted with other people.

2. Helps the person or the government avoid the pitfalls of the present by knowing
the rise and fall of the rulers, government and empires.
3. Makes a person’s life richer and fuller by giving meaning to the books he reads
(especially history books, the cities and metropolis he visits and the cultural
performances he hears and listens to)
4. Enable a person to grasp his relationship with the past, such as who to who
ordered the killing of Ninoy Aquino or why China insists on occupying territories
claimed by the Philippines.
5. History preserves cultural values of a nation and broadens person’s outlook in life
by learning and understanding the various races, cultures, habits, rituals,
ceremonies.

Lesson 1.3 – Relationship of History with other Social Sciences

1. History and Political Science

One cannot understand the principles and system of government of a certain
country without knowing its history. The structure of government, rights and
duties, laws and regulations, and its relations to other states are all products of
evolution by just turning the pages of the countries past.

2. History and Economics

The evolution of economic activities of humankind from hunting, and gathering
societies to post-industrial society can be best understood by looking at the past.
The roots of economic and diplomatic relations between nations can be traced
by looking at their distant past.

3. History and Sociology

Early societies and communities, evolution of culture, social change and other
developments in social behavior are chronologically explained by history.

4. History and Ethics

History provides records of mistakes committed by people and nations. Mistakes
in the past have moral and ethical implication which serves as a guide to arrive
at just, reasonable, and acceptable actions in the future.

5. History and Psychology

Psychology provides understanding of motives and actions of societies. History
gives us idea about the behavior of controversial leaders in the past and their
actions. Through analogy, it is possible to predict behaviors and actions of
present leaders.

6. History and Geography

Certain areas of the Philippines provide clear explanation why significant events
in the past happened.

Lesson 1.4 – Classification of Historical Sources

Historical sources may be classified as primary or secondary. A primary source is
regarded as the source of the best evidence. This is because the data come from the
testimony of able eye and eye witnesses to past events. They may also consist of actual
objects used in the past which you can directly scrutinize or examine. Secondary
sources are information supplied by a person who was not a direct observer or
participant of the event, object, or condition (Sevilla et. al, 1992).
