Present Simple

Present Simple for Future Events

The train departs at 9 AM.


Next Monday is twenty-first.
I see the doctor tomorrow at 11 AM.
The gates close at 1:00 AM.

When does the meeting start?


The meeting starts at 5 PM.

When does the class begin?


The class begins at 10 AM.
Zero Conditional

General Truths (will always happen)

If people eat too much, they get fat.


If people don’t eat healthy food, they get sick.
If you cool water to zero degrees, it forms ice.
If you heat water to 100 degrees Celsius, it boils.

One action is followed by another


If I have free time, I usually stay in and watch TV. (habit not a specific
situation)
If Ahmed is sad, he always goes to pray. (habit not a specific situation)

Condition Consequence
If people eat too much, they get fat.
If you heat water to 100, it boils.
If I have free time, I usually stay in and watch TV.
If Ahmed is sad, he always goes to pray.
When

You can replace “if” with “when:

When people eat too much, they get fat.


When people don’t eat healthy food, they get sick.
When you cool water to zero degrees, it forms ice.
When you heat water to 100 degrees Celsius, it boils.

When I feel sad, I always call my friends and we go out. When I feel sick,
I always go to Ahmed’s doctor.

You can begin with the second part of the sentence.

If people don’t eat healthy food, they get sick.


OR
People get sick if they don’t eat healthy food.

When people don’t eat healthy food, they get sick.


People get sick when they don’t eat healthy food.
Present and Past

Zero Conditional

IF (or WHEN) + Present Tense, Present Tense.

IF (or WHEN) + Past Tense, Past Tense.

Present Tense
I have a lot of free time. If I wake up early, I always watch a
movie before I go to work.

Past Tense
I used to have a lot of free time. If I woke up early, I always
watched a movie before I went to work.
First Conditional

We use the first conditional to express a probable future situation. We


use the first conditional for specific situations.

If I hear anything, I will give you a call.


If Mona needs help tomorrow, she will call you.
If I have time tomorrow, I will visit Ahmed in the hospital.
If you study hard next month, you will pass the exam.
If we leave soon, we will catch the bus.

If + Present Tense + will + Infinitive.

Future Condition Future Consequence


If I hear anything, I will give you a call.
If Mona needs help tomorrow, she will call you.
If I have time tomorrow, I will visit Ahmed in the hospital.
If we leave soon, we will catch the bus.
Position and Negative

If I hear anything, I will give you a call.


I will give you a call if I hear anything.
If Mona needs help tomorrow, she will call you.
Mona will call you if she needs help tomorrow.
If I have time tomorrow, I will visit Ahmed in the hospital.
I will visit Ahmed in the hospital if I have time tomorrow.

Negative verbs with the first conditional

If I don’t pass my test next week, my father won’t give me any money.

If we don’t leave soon, we won’t catch the bus.

If I forget to give medicine to my pet, it won’t survive.

If you don’t study hard, you won’t pass your next exam.

Rainy
What will you do tomorrow if it’s rainy?
If it’s rainy, I will take an umbrella.

Snowy
What will you do tomorrow if it’s snowy?
If it’s snowy, I will wear boots.

Difference between Zero Conditional and First Conditional

Zero Conditional
General situations, not specific.

If I’m hungry, I always order food online.

First Conditional
Specific future situations, not general.

If I get hungry tomorrow at work, I will order food online.

Zero Conditional
If I eat too much, I usually get sick.

First Conditional
If I eat too much tomorrow, I will get sick.
Your Friend

Your friend decided to cycle around the world. Write questions to ask
him about the following:

1- Leave the bike/want to go shopping.


Where will you leave the bike if you want to go shopping?

2- Repair the bike/something breaks.


How will you repair the bike if something breaks?

3- Sleep/not find a hotel.


Where will you sleep if you can’t find a hotel?

4- Eat/run out of money.


How will you eat if you run out of money?

5- Get home/steal/bike.
How will you get home if someone steals your bike?
Our Family Vacation

Our family is working very hard this year. If they work really
hard, they will all go on vacation. Ahmed Ali is a real estate
agent. If he sells four more houses than last year, he will have
enough money to take the family to Sharm. His wife, Mona, is
an interior designer. If she finds 15 new clients, the family will
be able to stay in a five-star hotel.

Ahmed’s mother walks to the convenience store every day


and buys a lottery ticket. If she wins the lottery, she will buy
the family plane tickets to Sharm.

The children promise to be on their best behavior. They will


go on vacation if they do their homework every day. Ahmed’s
son, Mostafa, loves swimming. If he passes his swimming
lessons, his father will let him swim in Sharm.
Present Progressive with First Conditional

I’m studying English.


I’m meeting Ahmed next week.

We can use the present progressive with the first conditional for :

1- (something that is happening now)


If you are using the computer, you will have to tell Michael.
If you are looking for Ahmed, you will find him in his room.

2- (future arrangement)
If you are meeting Ahmed next week, I will come with you.
If you are going to the movies tomorrow, I will cancel my meeting.
