POST-LAB ACTIVITY
RESULTS
Substance pH Inference
Milk 6 Acidic
Beer 4 Acidic
Softdrinks 3 Acidic
Vinegar 2 Acidic
Exploratory questions:
1. Which of the following solutions in table 1 are acidic? Neutral? Why do you think they are
basic, acidic, netural?
2
The following solution which enlisted as acidic are Milk, Beer, Softdrinks, Vinegar, and 0.1M
HCl. The solution which is Neutral interference are the Distilled water and 1.0% NaCl.
Exploratory questions:
2. Which solution(s) in table 2 shows greater change in pH upon addition of the indicated
solutions? What is/are the reasons(s) for the observed greater change in pH?
The solution with a greater change with solution added is 0.1M NaOH. By the amount of each
solution there’s a greater difference of each solution base to the ph level of solution.
3. Which solution(s) in table 2 shows smaller change in pH upon addition of the indicated
solutions? What is/are the reason(s) for the observed smaller change in pH?
The 0.1M HCl and 0.1M CH3COOH are the solution with a smaller change within. Moreover, it is
base through the ph level of solution.
4. What is the pH of the biological cell? Why is buffer important to biological cells? What will
happen to living things if the cellular fluids are not buffered? Why?
3
The ph level of biological cell is 7.2 to 7.6. When an acid or basic is supplied to the buffer system,
buffers attenuate the pH change. Buffers are vital in biological systems because of their capacity to keep
pH steady. While carbonic acid is an essential byproduct of this process, its presence is transient since
carbonic acid is expelled from the body as carbon dioxide gas every time we breathe. Without this
buffer mechanism, the pH in our bodies would fluctuate too much, causing us to perish.
