❖ INTRODUCTION

▪ ORIGIN OF MEDIA

▪ Definition
Radio, television, newspapers, the Internet and magazines,
considered as a group: can be followed by a singular or
plural verb
▪ Origin and usage
The word media is a plural form of the Latin word ‘medium’
meaning ‘middle ground or intermediate’. Its usage as a
word to describe newspapers, radio and other sources of
information likely derives from the term ‘mass media’
6|Page

which was a technical term used in the advertising

industry from the 1920s on.

▪ Examples
The word media refers to any form of communication that
delivers information. Common media outlets include
newspapers, radio, television, magazines and internet
sources like blogs or online publications. Today,
‘social media’ is a term that many people are familiar with;
this describes information distributed on social networking
websites.
The main goal of the media is to inform or communicate
with the greatest number of people possible, all at once.
The public relies on the media to learn about social and
political issues, entertainment, important world events,
popular culture and local and global news.
In the past, the media was mostly limited to newspapers,
magazines and other printed publications. Technology
helped to advance the media and expand the options for
people to get their daily news and information, first on the
radio and then on television. Now, many millions of people
rely on the internet to get their news &online media outlets
have become very popular all over the world.

▪ Quotations
“I don’t think there’s a… boundary between
digital media and print media. Every magazine is doing an
online version.” (Bill Gates)

❖ DIFFERENT TYPES OF MEDIA

Media is the term we use to refer to different types of
media that provide us with important information and
knowledge. Media has always been part of our society,
even when people used paintings and writings to share
information.

As time passed, people came up with different modes to

provide news to the public. Based on the type of medium,
their role may be different, but they all exist to
communicate to the audience and affect their perceptions.
Today, we don’t have to travel oceans or wait for a pigeon
to get the latest news.

In general, you can classify media in three main categories.

▪ Print Media
This type of news media used to be the only way of
delivering information to the public. For the generations of
the 80s and 90s, print media was the only media of
entertain. People relied on newspapers and magazines to
learn everything, from recipes and entertainment news to
important information about the country or the world.
Print media includes.

Newspapers – printed and distributed on a daily or weekly

basis. They include news related to sports, politics,
technology, science, local news, national news,
international news, birth notices, as well as entertainment
news related to fashion, celebrities, and movies. Today’s
parents grew up with this type of printed media.

Magazines – printed on a weekly, monthly, quarterly, or

annual basis. It contains information about finance, food,
lifestyle, fashion, sports, etc.

distributed with the newspapers or hand over to
people. Check this article to learn more on how to ease
the brochure design process here

▪ Broadcasting Media
Broadcasting media includes videos, audios, or written
content that provides important or entertaining
information shared by different methods

sharing various types of content, whereas now we have
hundreds of TV channels to choose from. Each channel
delivers a different type of content, so you have a separate

channel for news, drama, movies, sports, animation,

nature, travel, politics, cartoon, and religion. It’s the
number one broadcasting media due to its reach to the
audience.

Radio – uses radio waves to transmit entertaining,

informative, and educative content to the public. Due to its
high reach to the audience, radio is widely used for
advertising products and services. Radio is one of the
oldest means of entertainment, and today people often

commuting.

or movie has world-wide reachability. It’s the best type of
mass media to promote cultures and spread social
awareness. Movies have always played a huge part in the
entertainment world.

lot more often than traditional news sources. Websites
provide information in the form of video, text, and audio.
We can even choose the way we want to receive the news.
Types of Internet media include.

Social networks or websites – including Facebook,

Instagram, Twitter, YouTube, Tumblr, LinkedIn, Snapchat,
Quora, Reddit, Pinterest, etc. They are user-friendly and

lack of regulations on the content shared.

or theme. We can listen to them on a computer or a mobile

❖ BEFORE AND AFTER MEDIA

We always say that social media are so important for our

daily life. So what will happen when social media
disappeared? Actually, if social media disappears, our life
would be like the life before having social media.
So how does the world without Facebook, Twitter,
Instagram and YouTube looks like?

Look at the pictures below, here are some examples of how

our life looks like before and after having social media
BEFORE MEDIA

People in the old days will chat

together while having meeting with
friends or family because there are

AFTER MEDIA

After having social media,

❖ IMPORTANCE OF MEDIA IN
DIFFERNENT ASPECTS OF LIFE
The media is part of our lives and has an enormous
influence on our society. The importance of media is
15 | P a g e

growing every day due to the great connectivity that exists

around the globe. For this reason, it is necessary that each
one of us becomes aware of the power of the media. This
allows us to be critical of all the information we receive
daily.
It is necessary to take into account that the media not only
communicate but also offer their own perspective on every
event that takes place. Our duty is to analyse the
information we receive and draw our own conclusions.

▪ The Importance of Media in Our Life

Being Aware of the Reality
Different media inform us about what is happening in the
country and in the world. This information helps us to be
in touch with reality and to understand what is happening
around us and, of course, to understand what is
happening to the other.
By analysing the information we receive, we create our own
opinions about different topics and concepts. That mental
exercise strengthens our personality since we adhere to
some opinions and we move away from others. The
important thing is that our opinions and perspectives
16 | P a g e

develop peacefully, respecting those who think differently

from us.

Building a New Reality

The media creates its content according to what they

themselves want to communicate or based on what the
public wants to see. The continuity of certain media
content, for example, a television show, depends on the
success that reaches it. That means that if a singing talent
show succeeds and generates a lot of money, several
similar TV shows are going to appear. Therefore many
people will want to participate in these programs,
becoming an inspiration for those who want to be famous.
In this way a new reality has been created: the path to
immediate fame is to participate in a television talent
show.

▪ The Importance of Media in Education

Developing Critical Sense

The media is very important for education, as it helps to

develop a critical sense in children and teenagers. Radio,
television, and the internet offer us a myriad of options for
us to choose the one we like the most. It should be noted
that the means of communication tend to set borrowed
patterns. They influence each individual to choose one
option and not another. That’s why it’s important for
teachers and parents to foster a strong personality in
children and teenagers. In this way, they choose according
to their own convictions.
17 | P a g e

Knowledge Contribution

Thanks to its enormous power, the media brings

knowledge to countless different topics. This serves to
bring children and teenagers closer to various sources of
information and develop curiosity about what they want to
learn. Teachers should guide students to properly analyse
the sources from which they extract information. This will
help them differentiate the quality of the data they receive,
which can be good, regular, or bad. Keep in mind that
what arouses a child’s interest today could become an
inspiration for their professional future.

▪ The Importance of Media in Democracy

The Right to Know the Truth
Democracy is so far the fairest system of government that
exists today. It allows the people to elect their rulers and
then control what they do as public officials.
The media play a fundamental role in this process.
Journalists must strive to tell the truth about the lives of
politicians and show them as they are. In this way, every
citizen can evaluate politicians. According to each one’s
18 | P a g e

criteria, he or she will vote for the one he or she finds most
honest and capable.
Unfortunately, during this process, sometimes interests of
various kinds arise that prevent us from seeing the
politician as he or she is. The media can manipulate the
image of a politician, according to their convenience.
Therefore, each citizen must strengthen his or her own
criteria so that he or she can make better choices.

▪ The Importance of Media in Our Society

They Determine Our Place in the World

The media greatly influences society. They inform people

about what is happening. It permeates people’s lives by
creating their own criteria and opinions. In this way the
media moves the masses, creating different social
movements. In turn, each member of society indicates the
future changes that are coming.
The media plays a very important role in exposing various
social problems, thanks to which different solutions can be
deduced, in addition to responding to those who do not
fulfil their tasks. In this way, authorities in different areas
of government are evaluated according to their work.

Promote Massive Changes

Undoubtedly the media accompany the masses during

each of the changes that take place. Over the years people
have changed their way of informing themselves, preferring
some media and leaving others aside. One of the most
important changes that have taken place in the media is
the popularization of the use of social networks. People
interact with other users, create opinions, and set trends,
among other behaviours.
19 | P a g e

❖ CONCLUSION

In conclusion, the use of media images can be both

positive and negative to the individual or society. In a
positive way, media makes our lifestyle easier, for
example, we can get to know what is going on out
there, locally or globally, within a short space of time.
Even though there are so many benefits from media
images, we have to be careful not to let them influence
us unknowingly. We need to be wise when using the
media.
