 Self-interest refers to actions that elicit personal benefit. ... The Invisible
Hand Theory suggests that when entities make economic decisions in a free market
economy based on their own self-interest and rational self-interests it manifests
unintended, positive benefits for the economy at large.

 Preconventional morality – During this stage, there is a strong focus on survival and self-
interest.
 Conventional – During this stage, women prioritize selflessness and caring about others. 
 Postconventional – In the final stage of moral development, women emphasize taking
responsibility for the consequences of their choices and gaining control of their own lives.
Caring for others is a strong component of this high stage of moral development.

II. Analysis:

Gilligan’s work on moral development outlines how a woman’s morality is influenced by


relationships and how women form their moral and ethical foundation based on how their
decisions will affect others. She believes that women tend to develop morality in stages.

As stated in the information found inside the rectangular shape above, Gilligan is a feminist, do you

III. Abstraction:
Carol Gilligan is an American psychologist. She was born in 1996 to a lawyer and a school teacher.
Although her bachelor’s degree was in English literature, she went on to pursue a master’s degree
in clinical psychology and a doctorate in social psychology. Gilligan began her career at Harvard in
1967, teaching alongside Erik Erikson, one of the most well known developmental psychologists.

Gilligan’s theory of moral development in women and girls is divided in three levels
Level 1– Moral reasoning is based entirely around what is best for one’s self.
Level 2- Decisions is based on a sense of goodness as well as self-sacrifice.
Level 3- Feminine moral reasoning is based on valued truth as well as self-sacrifice; in this stage,
women are able to reason through consequences and the impact that one’s actions has on others.

The stages of moral reasoning of Gilligan are very similar to the theory of moral development that
was proposed by Lawrence Kohlberg. Gilligan worked closely with Kohlberg in the 1970s as his
research assistant. Based on the work she did with Kohlberg, Gilligan devised her own theory about
how girls and women developed moral reasoning. She argued that Kohlberg had based his theory
solely on interviews with white men and boys who were reasonably well-off, basing his findings on
a relatively small percentage of the population. Therefore, factors that play into he most
sophisticated level of moral reasoning n women, such as truth and self-sacrifice, were considered
inferior in Kohlberg’s model.

Gilligan’s views that women were different than men made her known as the founder of difference
feminism. Difference feminism holds that women think, feel, and behave differently than men, but
that because men are upheld as the standard, what is normal for women is therefore considered
inferior to what is normal for men. However, critics argue that Gilligan’s theory is unfounded, citing
recent studies that find little or differences in how men and women think.
