Electromagnetic Railgun: Shamit Savant Project Advisor Asish Kumar Nayak

The document describes an electromagnetic railgun and its simulation. An electromagnetic railgun uses electromagnetic force to accelerate a sliding armature along conductive rails, launching high velocity projectiles without explosives. Potential applications include weapons, launching aircraft, and mining. The simulation models the railgun using MATLAB. It includes a capacitor bank to deliver current to parallel rails, inducing a magnetic field from a coil to propel a spherical projectile. Plots show voltage over time charging the capacitors and resulting force and current over time on the projectile.

I. Introduction Figure 1: Working principle of railgun

A railgun is a device that uses electromagnetic

force to launch high velocity projectiles, by
means of a sliding armature that is accelerated
along a pair of conductive rails. Railguns rely
on electromagnetic force to propel a projectile
at very high velocities(more than 3km/s).

Because of the restrictions due to Corona Virus

(COVID-19) we decided to complete the en-
tire architecture of the gun on MATLAB and
Simulation. Although we could not make any
physical development in the project we still
gave a thought on the design, after brainstorm-
ing many different setups, we finally settled
on.

• A sherical projectile which shorts the two
rails, and reduce frictional losses.
• A current carrying coil to apply an exter-
nal, supporting magnetic field.
• A capacitor bank in order to deliver high
currents in a short amount of time to the
rails.
