1.0 INTRODUCITON:

The purpose of this Procedure is to establish guidelines addressing all

requirements that might be necessary to assure that excavation activities
conform to the Project design, drawings and specifications in the Tanajib
Sea Water Treatment Plant Expansion Project.

2.0 SCOPE

The scope of this procedure includes those excavations which are

considered to be the removal by hand or machine of existing material such
as soil, rocks, pavement, asphalt and buildings to accomplish the following.

a) Removal and disposal of materials encountered when establishing

the required grade elevation.
b) Create a void, which must be filled with concrete to provide a
foundation structure, building, or load bearing condition.
(Please be noted that a separate method statement is prepared for the
excavation of the Sea Water Intake Basin and the 48" pipe line considering
its special nature – refer to MAC-G82-MS-C-002)

4.0 RESPONSIBILITIES:

The Construction Manager/ Engineer is responsible for proper Execution

and civil QC Inspector shall be responsible to inspect and make sure that
excavation is executed in compliance with procedure and the details of the
project design drawings and specifications in the performance of work
associated with earth excavation.

5.0 PERMITS

Excavation permits where required shall be obtained prior to the

commencement of the excavation. The area to be excavated as well as a
survey showing all underground utilities shall be attached with the permit
application.

6.0 PROCEDURE

Upon receipt of approval for construction design drawings including soil

composition, profile data, and grading plan, the Construction Manager and
civil construction engineer shall select the most convenient and economical
method to perform the required excavation. Their selection shall be based
on size and details of the excavation and the type of equipment available.

7.0 EXCAVATION DIMENSIONS

The dimensions of the required excavation are critical, the Construction

Manager and his survey team shall monitor excavation dimensions as per
the IFC drawings as the work is in progress. Unauthorized excavation
should be avoided as far as possible except when planned to provide room
for concrete placement formwork, placement or inspection of pipe work or
duct banks. Unauthorized excavation will require backfilling to complete the
construction.

If unsuitable bearing materials are encountered at required sub grade, over

excavation will be required. The undesired material will be replaced with
approved select fill material for the structure. The Client will compensate
contractor for this additional work.

8.0 STABILITY OF EXCAVATION / SUPPORT PROTECTION

The Construction Manager and civil construction engineer shall furthermore

ensure the stability of excavation, they shall design adequate excavation
supports and bracing, using protective sheet piling/shoring to prevent
landslip, cave-ins, and other soil movements which might alter the
excavation or undermine the foundations of nearby structures. The civil
construction engineer shall determine the existence and locations of
underground installations and take adequate precautions to support them
and protect them from damage by impact or equipment vibration.

9.0 WORK CHECKLIST

Saudi Aramco inspection checklists: SAIC-A-1001 to 1006 will be used. The

work checklist is a summary of the work instructions. The intent of the
work checklist is to provide a listing of possible activities that may require
inspection and or verification in the performance of excavation. The civil
Construction Engineer shall use this work checklist to prepare the work
process format. He shall select those activities from the work checklist that
are applicable to the particular earth excavation operation.

10.0 REVIEW/COORDINATION OF UNDERGROUND UTILITIES

Determine whether underground installations such as sewers, telephone,

water pipes or duct banks have been located in the excavation area.
Ensure adequate care to protect and support these utilities.

11.0 INSPECTION

The civil Inspector shall conduct daily inspections to check excavation

progress. Upon completion of work he will raise RFI and coordinate with
Client/SA

12.0 FIELD QUALITY CONTROL CHECK

Following is a list of checkpoints. Appropriate activities may be selected

and complete the Aramco checklist for inspection and verification by
client/SA.

 Check for existence of underground utilities in excavation.

 Check excavation area has been cleared and grubbed.
 Check that excavation for the structure conforms to the elevations
and dimensions shown, within a tolerance of plus or minus 30 mm
and extending a sufficient distance to permit placing and removal of
concrete formwork, installation of services and other inspection
activities.

 When excavation reaches required sub-grade inform the

JGULF/Saudi Aramco Representative that it is ready for inspection.
 Check if unusual bearing materials are encountered at required sub-
grade elevations. If undesirable, over excavate with Saudi Aramco
instruction and replace the material with compacted fill.
 Check to avoid unauthorized excavation.
 Check to avoid under excavation.
 Ensure excavation for load bearing foundations has elevations,
dimensions, grading and soil conditions within tolerances.
 Check that a proper support system is constructed.
 Check that shoring and support system do not interfere with other
activities.
 Check that support system has been dismantled after completion of
activities.
 Check excavated material is either disposed to a designated
location, if unsuitable or stockpiled at designated location, if suitable
as fill material.
 Check that safe and easy access into excavation has been provided
and maintained.
 Ensure that all open excavated areas are fully barricaded.
 Ensure that signal lights are available and in place.
 Ensure that proper warning signs have been placed.

13.0 SAFETY:
Safety officer will be monitoring the work with all the safety requirements in
place.
