READING INTERVENTION OF KAUSWAGAN ELEMENTARY SCHOOL TO


IMPROVE PUPILS’ READING PERFORMANCE
2013-2014

I-Objectives:
A. To improve the reading performance of pupils
- to eradicate non-readers
- to reduce the number of frustration readers
- to increase the number of instructional and independent readers

II- Activities:
A. All Teachers are designated Reading Specialists.
B. Teachers are given orientation for STAR implementation
C. Set up reading Clinic to be used during remediation.
D. Teachers conducted their special session in their respective classrooms.
E. Other Functions of the Reading Clinic Teacher
* diagnose deeper the reading problems of the pupils and to provide
appropriate intervention/s
* group the pupils according to their needs
* track the reading performance of the pupils
* provide feedback to parents the reading progress of their children

F. All class advisers have conducted their own remedial measures to their respective
pupils and Activities like:
 shared reading
 Each One Teach One
 Mentor and Mentee/
 Tutor-Tutee, Telling
 Retelling Stories,
 Free Reading
G. Reading Strategies such as:
 Word Attack
 Assisted reading
 read Aloud
 Graphophonic Strategies
 Drawing
 acting out
 activating prior knowledge
 questioning
were conducted.

H. Schedule of the Special Session: Advisers of the following clienteles are


responsible of their own pupils while the Reading Coordinator and Principal will
have their Quarterly Reading Assessment to monitor clienteles Progress.

Remediation time is Noontime Break @ 12:00 -1:00 M0nday to Friday


I. Monitoring and Evaluation: Principal and Reading Coordinator monitored the
implementation of the STAR and provided immediate feedback to the teachers on the progress of
the clienteles reading ability.

First Reading Assessment is on September 27, 2013


Second Reading Assessment is on November 29, 2013
Third Reading Assessment is on January 24, 2014
Fourth Reading Assessment is on March 14, 2014

III- Findings:
1. Teachers who seriously perform their task during remediation have better
Reading Performance results.
2. Strong support of the administrators remarkably facilitated for a better STAR
implementation.
3. Regular monitoring and evaluation ensured better implementation.

Reading Intervention in Kauswagan Elementary School started after the Phil –IRI has been
conducted and pupils who are severely poor in reading are our clienteles for special remediation.
