II. INTERACTION:
Discussion 1: Review of Lesson in Listening

Last meeting we discussed Listening and its principles in order to be an effective listener. The highlight of our discussion was the
different strategies in answering different types of Listening questions.

As a review, below are the tips that you need to remember at all times when answering a listening exam in order to get a good
mark:

Strategies in Listening Exam

1. THREE STAGES OF LISTENING:


a. Before Listening. Read the question in advance. This will enable you to anticipate the answer to the question.
b. During Listening. Do focus. Listen intently as the audio material is played once only. Fight short attentionspan.
c. After Listening. Quickly review your answers then start reading the next question.

2. READ INSTRUCTIONS. Be very careful with the instructions as the proper format in writing the answer is in it. Correct
answer with inappropriate format will be marked wrong.
3. TAKE NOTES. Note taking is very important. Some of the most important details you need to take note of are:
a. names (A-N-G-E-L-O)
b. numbers (09988765432, JBL01234)
c. times (8:30 am / 1:00 PM)
d. dates (26 January, December 25, September 8 th)
e. places (park, theatre, Scotland)
4. OBSERVE CORRECT SPELLING. It doesn’t matter if you write all your answers in lower case or in CAPITAL LETTERS
as long as all your answers are spelt correctly. Avoid texting (e.g. vrbs, buk, comunic8)
5. PAUSE MEANS ANSWER. When there is a pause, it means an answer was given already. Move on to the next question.
6. NO BLANKS. Ensure all questions are answered. If you miss the answer, guessing is your last option, which is better
than leaving the item blank.

Types of Listening Questions

1. COMPLETION. You have to fill in gaps that covers part of the listening text. Gap fill comes in different forms such as:
a. Forms / Note Completion
b. Table Completion
c. Sentence and Summary Completion
d. Flowchart Completion
In order to answer any type of completion task, you need to identify the missing word/s from the recording that fit into the
question. You should not change the words from the recording in any way and should keep to the word limit stated in the
instructions.

2. SHORT-ANSWER QUESTIONS. In this task, you have to write an answer to a question using information from the
recording. You should read the instruction carefully as it indicates the word limit given for each task. Sometimes you are
given a question that asks you to list two or three points.

3. MATCHING TYPE. You have to match a numbered list of items from the listening text to a set of criteria. This task tests
your ability to listen for specific detail. It is therefore often used with texts dealing with factual information.

4. MULTIPLE CHOICE. This task may include a question followed by three possible answers. You have to choose the one
correct answer: A, B or C. You may need to understand specific points or the main points of the listening text.

5. LABELLING A DIAGRAM, PLAN OR MAP. You have to complete labels on a visual such as diagram, set of pictures,
plan of a building or a map of a part of a town. The answers are usually selected from a list on the question paper.

Do you have any question or clarification? Make sure you understand how to answer a
listening exam and all the strategies involved as you will be answering different tasks to
assess your listening skills.

Success in Listening:
In the listening exam, your success will depend on knowing what information to listen for. You are not expected to have any
specialist knowledge, but you should be able to deal with a range of topics and a number of different voices and accents. It may
sound difficult at this point, but once you tried at least one or two listening exercises, you will realize that taking a listen ing exam
is really easy. It is the easiest as compared to reading, writing and speaking because all the answers are provided by the speaker.

Practice Materials:
Have you done some listening exercises? If not yet, please do answer some exercises in order to understand the process of
completing Listening exercises. Also, you need to get used to the different native English accents. So do listen to all the recordings
as many times as you want until you get used to the diverse English intonations.

Access your CLMS and look for Practice Materials section. Choose any listening exercise you want to try. Download the
questionnaire and audio material/s. Play and listen to the recording as you answer all the questions.

Do not worry if you get a bad score at your first or second attempt. Keep trying until you master all the listening technique s in
getting a good score. The more you practice, the more you learn and understand. Remember, an expert was once a beginner.

Discussion 2: Differences between American and British English

All the exercises in our course are taken from actual international test called IELTS. Therefore, some of the vo cabulary and syntax
used that you may encounter in any of the exercises may be new to you. If you do not recognize a word at first, you will be a ble
to assess the meaning of the word through its context in the sentence.

In addition, writing your answers in all listening exercises should be properly spelled. However, you must use just one form of
English consistently – that is, either British or American when writing all your answers.

There are two main differences, at least, between British and American English – spelling and word usage. Here are some
examples:

Have you ever wonder why native English people sound nice whenever they are talking? It is because they speak in sound groups
rather than individual groups. Try pronouncing the following line by line:

The Dime
The Dime easier
They tell me the Dime easier
They tell me the Dime easier to understand
They tell me that I’m easier to understand.

Now you know how to sound like a native American! Isn’t amazing? Many English people do combine the sounds of the words in
a sentence.

Below are some formulas or techniques in order to improve your pronunciation.

1. Between a Consonant and a Vowel


Words are connected when a preceding word ends in a consonant sound and the next word start with a vowel sound.

my name is [my nay-miz]


because I’ve [b’k’z-iv]
read only [ree-donly]

2. Between a Consonant and a Consonant


Words are connected when the first word ends in a consonant sound and the next word starts with a consonant that is in simila r
position.

get the chance [ge(t)d’chance]

3. Between a Vowel and a Vowel


Add a glide (y) after an “e” sound and a (w) after a “u” sound. Don’t forget the American “o” sound is really (ou).

Do you know that SCHWA is the most common vowel sound in English language?
It is similar to saying “uh.” It occurs in unstressed syllables. So any vowel sound
in the unstressed part of the word is neutralized.
